Minsk, January 3 (Xinhua) — The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically condemned the armed aggression committed on January 3 against the sovereign state of Venezuela and views it as a direct threat to international peace and security. The ministry's press service released the statement on Saturday.

"The Belarusian side declares its unwavering support for the legitimate government of Venezuela and joins the call for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, which bears primary responsibility for maintaining peace," the country's Foreign Ministry stated.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry also noted that the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Caracas is operating as usual and its personnel are safe.

"Belarus emphasizes: the right of the Venezuelan people to independently determine their own destiny is inviolable. No form of external interference, especially forceful, can be justified," the Belarusian Foreign Ministry noted.

Furthermore, on January 3, at the initiative of the Belarusian side, a telephone conversation took place between Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil Pinto. During the conversation, Ryzhenkov expressed support for the Venezuelan government's position on sovereignty, the preservation of the country's legitimately elected authorities, and Caracas' initiatives, including in international organizations.

In turn, the head of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry informed the Belarusian side about US military strikes on a number of military and civilian targets in Venezuela, as well as the current situation in the country. Currently, in accordance with the Venezuelan Constitution, the leadership of the state will be exercised by Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) — Venezuela's Permanent Mission to the United Nations on Saturday sent a letter to the organization's Security Council (SC) President for January, Abukar Dahir Osman, condemning the "brutal, unjustified and unilateral" US military attacks against the South American country.

The letter also puts forward four demands: convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss US aggression, strongly condemn the aggression against Venezuela, immediately end US military attacks, and take steps to hold Washington accountable for the “crime of aggression.”

The letter noted that US forces earlier on Saturday bombed civilian and military targets in the capital, Caracas, and in the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, and also carried out strikes across the country using helicopters and aircraft.

The letter emphasizes that the attack constitutes a flagrant act of aggression that was pre-planned, acknowledged and publicized by Washington, and that it “flagrantly” violates the UN Charter.

The US attack was carried out against a country in a state of complete peace, the document notes. It states that the attack's goal is to overthrow the current Venezuelan regime and install a "puppet government" to plunder the country's oil resources.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been taken aboard a ship after being detained by U.S. forces and will be transported to New York.

D. Trump told Fox News that the couple were charged in New York and would be transported to that state.

He said he watched the night operation to arrest them, which was "literally like watching a TV show."

N. Maduro was “in a house that looked more like a fortress than a home,” with “solid steel protection,” when he was detained, D. Trump noted.

The US President did not rule out the possibility of a second strike on Venezuela after the arrest of N. Maduro. –0–

BEIJING, January 3 (Xinhua) — China is deeply shocked and strongly condemns the US's flagrant use of force against a sovereign state and Washington's actions against its president, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Saturday.

The United States reportedly launched military strikes against Venezuela, after which American President Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social that the United States had "successfully" carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who, along with his wife, was captured and "taken out of the country."

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted that such hegemonic actions by the US seriously violate international law, trample on Venezuela's sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean, and China firmly opposes them.

“We call on the United States to abide by international law, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and stop infringing on the sovereignty and security of other countries,” the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry concluded. –0–

Gaza, January 3 (Xinhua) — Two Palestinians, including an 11-year-old girl, were killed Saturday by Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip, as Israel launched airstrikes on the eastern part of the enclave, Palestinian sources reported.

Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal told Xinhua that a 27-year-old man was shot dead while attempting to reach his home in the al-Shuja'iya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City. The neighborhood is located near the so-called "Yellow Line," which demarcates areas where Israeli troops remain stationed and where civilians are often prohibited from entering.

In another incident, an 11-year-old girl was killed by an Israeli airstrike in what was described as a safe zone in the town of Beit Lahiya in northwestern Gaza. Her body was taken to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, Basal reported.

He added that two more people were wounded in the shelling while in the backyard of the Nasser public hospital in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis. –0–
