BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — China firmly opposes the United States exaggerating the concept of national security and making discriminatory lists to unreasonably exert pressure on Chinese companies, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday.

The Chinese diplomat responded to journalists' inquiries at a regular departmental press conference about the US Federal Communications Commission's announcement on Monday that it was adding the Chinese company DJI to a list of companies that pose an unacceptable risk to US national security and prohibiting the issuance of permits for the import or sale of new types of drones to the company in the US.

The US side must correct its mistakes and ensure a fair, just, and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese enterprises, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized. -0-

Washington, December 23 (Xinhua) — The U.S. military sank a "stealth vessel" suspected of smuggling drugs in international waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Monday, killing a man on board, U.S. Southern Command announced on social media.

At the direction of US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a "lethal kinetic strike" on a vessel in international waters, the military stated. It noted that the vessel was operated by an organization designated as a terrorist organization by US authorities.

Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along known drug trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific and was involved in drug trafficking, the command said, adding that one narco-terrorist was killed in the strike.

As of Monday, the Pentagon has sunk more than 29 suspected drug-carrying vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since early September, killing at least 105 crew members.

For nearly four months, the United States has maintained a significant military presence in the Caribbean, primarily off the coast of Venezuela, calling it part of an effort to combat drug trafficking. Caracas has denounced the American actions as a thinly veiled attempt at regime change in Venezuela.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — The Xinhua Center, a national think tank, on Monday released a new book titled "Ideological Colonization" in Chinese and English at the 36th Xinhua News Agency-hosted journalism academic conference.

The book, published by Xinhua, includes two analytical reports: “Ideological Colonization: Methods, Origins, and International Dangers of US Cognitive Warfare” and “US Military Hegemony: Origins, Facts, and Dangers.”

The report on American ideological colonization reveals how the United States has long eroded the sovereignty of other countries through ideological infiltration, undermining fairness in international perceptions. The report was first presented on September 7 of this year at the High-Level Forum of Media and Think Tanks of the Global South.

The report on US military hegemony examines the ideological roots, instruments, and practices of American military hegemony, as well as the damage Washington has inflicted on global security and stability. The report was first published on September 5, 2023, and was subsequently revised to reflect recent developments before being included in a recently published book.

Since their publication, the reports have played a significant role in building consensus among countries in the Global South on the pursuit of independent development and liberation from hegemonic constraints, according to experts attending a scientific conference on Monday. –0–

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — China on Tuesday released guidelines to accelerate the development of solar thermal power, calling for its installed capacity to reach 15 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 at a cost broadly comparable to that of coal power.

The guideline, jointly issued by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration, focuses on project construction and expanding application scenarios to promote large-scale deployment of solar thermal power.

According to the document, by 2030, China plans to transform the sector into an internationally competitive new energy industry characterized by the adoption of advanced global technologies, fully controlled domestically, and market-oriented and industrialized growth.

After years of development, China has made significant advances in core solar thermal energy technologies and established a leading industrial chain, with the construction cost per kilowatt falling from approximately 30,000 yuan (US$4,253.9) 10 years ago to approximately 15,000 yuan. The cost of power generation has also dropped significantly.

However, according to a representative of China's State Energy Administration, the sector still faces a number of challenges, including high initial investment and relatively weak market competitiveness.

To address these issues, the document outlines strategies such as the development of large-scale solar thermal power plants adapted to local conditions and the implementation of integrated projects combining solar thermal, wind, and photovoltaic energy in a coordinated manner. These initiatives aim to address local energy shortages, support grid operations, and improve the security and stability of energy supply.

The guidance also notes that the equitable participation of solar thermal power in electricity markets should be promoted, with provincial-level regions urged to implement region-specific pricing mechanisms that balance competition and operational stability.

The document emphasizes the need to accelerate research and development in key technologies, materials and equipment, and to support leading companies and research institutions involved in solar thermal energy in creating joint research platforms to enhance technological independence and develop domestic production of key equipment. -0-

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's Forestry and Grassland Administration told reporters that 4.46 million hectares of desertified land have been restored in the region over the past five years. This represents over 40% of all land restored in the country, helping to strengthen the ecological barrier in northern China.

Inner Mongolia is among the regions in China with the highest concentration of land severely affected by desertification and degradation. It is home to four major deserts—Badain Jaran, Tengger, Ulan Bukh, and Kubuchi—as well as four large sand massifs—Maousu, Hunshandake, Khorqin, and Hulunbuir. The challenges of ecological restoration in this region are particularly challenging.

According to reports, combating desertification is considered a key task in Inner Mongolia to strengthen the ecological barrier in northern China. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, ecological construction work was completed in the region covering a total area of 8.2 million hectares, of which 4.46 million hectares were dedicated to combating desertification.

As of 2024, Inner Mongolia's forest cover reached 21.98%, an increase of 1.19 percentage points compared to 2021. Steppe vegetation coverage has consistently remained above 45%, and the wetland area remains stable at approximately 4.67 million hectares. These indicators indicate that the region's ecological barrier function continues to strengthen.
