WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Less than a month after taking office, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Susan Monares was fired on Wednesday.

“Susan Monares is no longer the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We thank her for her dedicated service to the American people,” the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC, said in a post on the social media site X, without providing a reason.

When Monares was sworn in as CDC chief on July 31, she became the shortest-serving director in the agency's history.

Hours after the ministry's announcement, Monares' legal team released a statement saying she had not resigned or been fired.

Her lawyers accused Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. of "using public health for political purposes" and said he put "the lives of millions of Americans" at risk by firing health officials from the government.

Shortly after the statement was released, the White House officially fired S. Monares.

“Because Susan Monares refused to resign, despite informing the Department of Health and Human Services leadership of her intention to do so, the White House has terminated her employment,” White House press secretary Kush Desai said in a statement.

The Washington Post, citing two people familiar with the matter, reported that Robert Kennedy Jr., administration lawyers and other officials “pressed Monares for several days” to see if she would support rescinding some coronavirus vaccine authorizations.

“Robert Kennedy Jr., who has long been known for his anti-vaccine stance, and other officials asked Monares on Monday whether she supported the administration’s efforts to change its vaccine policy,” the report said.

Also on Wednesday, several senior CDC officials resigned, with U.S. media reporting that the resignations were linked to dissatisfaction with vaccine policies, alleged misinformation and the politicization of public health. –0–

Moscow, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China will be completely unprecedented, and preparations for it are currently underway, the Russian leader's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing on Wednesday.

According to D. Peskov, a schedule of bilateral meetings of the Russian leader is being formed.

SYDNEY, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Australian authorities have seized 900 kilograms of amphetamine that was shipped to Sydney in cardboard rolls, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Border Force (ABF) said on Thursday.

The drugs were reportedly found on August 20 when ABF officers, using available intelligence, targeted a container arriving at Port Botany in Sydney for inspection.

During the inspection, officers found 100 boxes, each containing six rolls of plastic film wrapped around cardboard rolls. ABF sniffer dogs responded positive when one of the rolls was drilled and found to contain white pellets.

Subsequent tests identified the substance as amphetamine, with each of the 600 rolls containing approximately 1.5kg of the drug. The total of 900kg had a street value of more than A$64 million (US$41.6 million), according to the AFP and ABF.

Tashkent, August 28 (Xinhua) — Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a delegation led by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, local media reported on Thursday, citing the press service of the Uzbek leader.

“On August 27, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a delegation led by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, who is in our country on an official visit,” the statement said.

A gala concert to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War will be held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the evening of September 3, a press conference was announced on Thursday.

TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Iran's Supreme National Security Council has approved the return of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to the country, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday.

He told the official IRNA news agency that inspectors were allowed to witness the fuel change at the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The minister also denied reports that Iran and the IAEA had agreed on a new framework for cooperation, saying that despite the exchange of proposals, the final text of the document had not yet been approved.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said on Tuesday that agency inspectors had returned to Iran for the first time since their deportation during the June conflict. “The first team of IAEA inspectors is now back in Iran and we are ready to resume work,” he said.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA in early July after President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a parliamentary bill restricting access to nuclear sites. The move followed Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Tehran accused the agency, and Rafael Grossi in particular, of siding with the West and failing to condemn the attacks.

Yerevan, August 28 /Xinhua/ — "In a world where conflicts are increasingly resolved by force, China and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization offer an alternative – dialogue and diplomacy," Grigor Petrosyan, chairman of the Armenian Peace Committee, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency recently.

He noted that China has historically built international relations through culture, education and knowledge sharing rather than through conquest. According to him, it is this approach that today strengthens the country's role as a factor of stability and trust in the global arena.

DHAKA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — The Chinese government on Tuesday donated flood relief materials to the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to help the country improve disaster preparedness and response.

The aid shipment included life jackets, rubber boats, life rafts, water purification devices, and so on.

These state-of-the-art materials will enable BDRCS volunteers to respond more effectively to floods, cyclones and storm surges, said the society’s chairman, Mohammed Azizul Islam, at the handover ceremony. “BDRCS remains steadfast in its mission of serving humanity and such donations significantly enhance our operational capabilities,” he added.

“This support from the Chinese government will further accelerate our rescue and humanitarian operations,” said Farooq-e-Azam, adviser to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, noting that his country is vulnerable to floods and natural disasters.

The official said the handover of the materials was a reflection of the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two countries. “We deeply appreciate this solidarity and look forward to further cooperation in the field of disaster management and humanitarian assistance,” Farooq-e-Azam said.

Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen said China firmly supports Bangladesh in improving people's livelihoods and promoting social development. The donation is aimed at strengthening Bangladesh's capacity to prevent and mitigate natural disasters, the diplomat said.
