For several years in a row, students and experts from the RUDN Institute of Ecology have been contributing to the federal project "Clean Air" of the national project "Ecological Well-Being". In 2025, they worked in 12 industrial cities of Russia at once: Lipetsk, Cherepovets, Nizhny Tagil, Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Omsk, Novokuznetsk, Bratsk, Chita, Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk and Mednogorsk.

The students were engaged in video recording of traffic during rush hours, formed datasets for traffic intensity analysis using artificial intelligence technologies, and also assessed the impact of traffic flows on air quality in various meteorological conditions.

Sunny nights and a wind that knocks you off your feet

Students who worked in Norilsk, a city where there is no summer in the usual sense of the word, shared their impressions of working within the project with us. The weather here can change in half an hour.

"Strong wind that knocked the camera and cones off our feet and shook them, cold rain… Sometimes the bad weather lowered our work spirit and we wanted to give up. In addition, one of the difficulties was the polar day. After all, the sun does not set over Norilsk for 189 days, and even the locals, not to mention visitors, have completely lost their sleep patterns, and day and night mix. Therefore, for the first four days of our stay in the city, we could not get used to the fact that at three o'clock in the morning it was light outside and the sun was shining," – Ekaterina Kostenko, Bachelor of Science, RUDN Institute of Ecology (field of study "Energy and Resource-Saving Processes in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemistry and Biotechnology", 2nd year student).

The students also drew attention to environmental problems in Norilsk.

“The emissions here hit the mucous membranes and skin, causing unpleasant and sometimes painful sensations in the nose and throat,” says Vladislav Fadeev, a master’s student at the RUDN University Institute of Ecology (Ecology and Nature Management, 2nd year).

Local care

But despite the difficulties, the students also remembered the city from a pleasant side. Especially thanks to the care of local residents. According to the students, they always asked whether the participants of the national project needed help and even gave small gifts.

"I was approached many times and asked about something, were interested. There were various interesting conversations, even with Norilsk Nickel employees. But one of the most interesting moments happened when, as I understood, a local photographer passed by. He took pictures of everyone present. Later, when I had already moved on to other locations (it was eight in the morning!), he found me and gave me the pictures in which I was.

In their free time, the students enjoyed exploring Norilsk and its sights. For example, they visited a local museum and climbed one of the peaks of the Kharaelakh mountain range.

“In the museum, we were able to see and touch minerals and ores that we had previously only studied in theory during geology classes,” says Ekaterina Kostenko.

City of strong people

Participation in the federal project allowed RUDN students to acquire many useful skills that will be useful to them in their future work.

"We have developed, so to speak, immunity, increased stress resistance, since we found ourselves in quite unforeseen and difficult situations, from which we had to quickly find a way out, make fairly quick decisions that would subsequently affect the work, the filming. Therefore, the experience gained here is useful not only in our professional activities, but also in all spheres of life in general," – Valeria Romanova, Bachelor of the Institute of Ecology of RUDN (Ecology and Nature Management, 4th year).

"The main skill I gained was the experience of a business trip. Since in the future, when I start working in my specialty, I will most likely have to travel to different cities as well," says Daniil Dubovitsky, a bachelor's student at the Institute of Ecology at RUDN (specializing in "Energy and resource-saving processes in chemical engineering, petrochemistry and biotechnology", 3rd year student).

"Norilsk is a city of strong people, so this trip became a real test of strength and stress resistance. And these are very important qualities for further career development. I also learned how to perform the measurements that we took, and even got excited about the idea of doing an internship at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation," Ekaterina Kostenko.

About the project

The federal project "Clean Air" is being implemented within the framework of the national project "Ecological Well-being". It is aimed at reducing air pollution in large industrial centers. Its goal is to reduce the total volume of emissions in 22 cities participating in the project by 20% by 2030.

Polytechnic welcomes first-graders: gifts for employees' children

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

On the eve of the new academic year, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University celebrated an important event again— the beginning of the school journey of the children of its employees. 88 boys and girls, who will go to first grade for the first time in 2025, received gift school sets.

A real holiday of knowledge was organized in the research building of Technopolis Polytech. Children sang songs from their favorite cartoons and danced to cheerful melodies. Of course, conversations quickly began and new friends were made. "How old are you?" one girl asked. "I'm seven, I'm already in first grade," another proudly answered. And soon the children were surprised to find out that each of them was starting their own exciting journey into the world of knowledge.

We are very glad that today you came to visit your moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas at work. We hope that you will visit the Polytechnic more and more often, and then enroll in our university. You have a wonderful time ahead of you. Fun moments, new friends and good people await you. I wish you to go through this path with interest and responsibility, and also to gain a lot of knowledge. And I would like to wish strength and patience to parents, grandmas and grandpas, – Vice-Rector for Information, Youth Policy and Security Maxim Pasholikov greeted the young guests.

The characters of the fairy tale "The Golden Key" – Buratino, Malvina, Harlequin, Basilio the cat and Alice the fox – turned the science building into a magical land of adventures, organizing interactive games, tricks, quizzes and mini-experiments for the first-graders. The children watched in fascination as clouds of multi-colored soap bubbles floated in the air.

Of course, there were gifts. The children received capacious bags with a set of stationery, balloons and bracelets with the Polytechnic symbols. In the finale, Harlequin invited the first-graders on an exciting journey to the second floor, where ice cream, juices and water were waiting for them in the cafe.

Lyudmila Chishko came to the celebration with her two granddaughters – Valeria, who is going to first grade this year, and Polina, who will become a first grader in three years.

We really hope that both granddaughters will one day study at this glorious university. My son Sergey Chishko is a research engineer at the Engineering Center "Computer Engineering Center". My daughter-in-law is also a graduate of the Polytechnic University. When they got married nine years ago, just unveiled a monument to Saints Peter and Fevronia on the university grounds. They were photographed on their wedding day, and they entered the history of the Polytechnic University, said Lyudmila Gennadyevna.

When my son saw a backpack with the Polytechnic logo, he immediately said: "Now I am also a Polytechnician." It is incredible to feel that your child is already a part of something big, – shared the director of the Center for Additional Professional Programs of the Civil Engineering Institute Ksenia Strelets.

The initiator of the holiday for first-graders was the SPbPU Human Resources Directorate.

We really wanted the children of our polytechnics to remember the beginning of their studies with pleasant emotions. We are happy to give them the opportunity to start their school journey with unforgettable impressions and gifts, to expand their understanding of the place where their parents work. On my own behalf, I can say that I was happy to see such bright smiles and sincere interest in our little guests. We are looking forward to the next meetings and new joint adventures, – noted the head of the HR Directorate Maria Pakhomova.

Each branded set included a bag for changing shoes, a white T-shirt, a pencil case, pens, an eraser, a map case, a ruler, markers, an album, notebooks, a bottle for drinking, and reflectors. The gift became not only help for the beginning of the school year, but also a symbol of attention from the native university of the father and mother, as well as a reminder that children and adults are part of a large and friendly polytechnic family.

Pedagogical team "Youth": what is the best way to spend your summer?

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

For the student teaching team "Yunost", summer is not just a vacation, but a real rhythm of life, where every day is filled with events, emotions and a sense of responsibility. This year, the polytechnicians worked in children's health camps in the Leningrad Region: "Chaika", "Golubaya Strela" and "Meridian".

During the summer season, Yunost activists do not have lectures or notes on the counselor's business, but real situations arise that require a quick reaction, a creative approach and the ability to work in a team. Every day is a new challenge: from planning events to resolving conflicts, from morning exercises to an evening campfire. And if at the beginning it seems that three weeks is a lot, then by the end of the shift you understand how quickly time has flown and how much has happened.

The guys work not only as counselors, but also as club leaders, inspiring children to be creative, and also hold positions in the press center, preserving the most valuable moments. They even become substitute counselors, who are always ready to help during heavy workloads.

The guys admit that they do all this for the sake of emotions: children's laughter, gratitude from parents, observations of how boys and girls grow and become more self-confident. This is the most valuable feedback that helps to understand that everything is not just like that.

This shift became the best proof for me: there are no bad children – there is unspent energy that can be turned into creativity! I was lucky to work with very active and emotional children – yes, sometimes it was not easy, but this was our main advantage. As soon as we started talking about the upcoming concert, the squad quickly got down to work. As a result, we were repeatedly noted for our unconventional approach. And although we did not always receive awards, the main victories were not them at all, but the happy eyes of the children, their happy smiles and desire to create together, – shared a fighter of the SPO "Yunost" Tatyana Shmeleva.

Organizational issues caused a lot of trouble during the shift. And here the squad friends came to the rescue, who would support and not let you get bored.

The work season for the Yunost squad is not just a summer job, but a whole life. The guys gain experience and create valuable moments of their youth – the very ones that will warm the soul many years later. And all this thanks to working in a large and friendly team – the squad family.

Training of engineering personnel: Rector of SPbPU spoke at a meeting with Nikolai Patrushev

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Rector of SPbPU Andrey Rudskoy took part in a meeting with heads of state authorities and organizations, which was chaired by Assistant to the President of Russia and Head of the Marine Collegium Nikolay Patrushev. The topic of the meeting was the priority tasks for the development of engineering education.

The main focus of the discussion was on the role of the new national higher education system in improving the quality of engineering training. The meeting participants paid special attention to federal educational and methodological associations (FEMA) as an important element of the new nationally oriented higher education system. In his report on this topic, SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy analyzed the key success factors of the domestic FEMA system and emphasized the need to preserve and develop its fundamental principles during the upcoming update.

The history of FUMO began in 1988, when the country began the transition from a planned economy to a market economy. Until that time, the content and methods of education in a specific specialty for all higher education institutions were determined by one of them, appointed by the ministry. But in the conditions of the emerging market economy, this approach ceased to be effective. In order to take into account the diversity of the economy and the requirements of employers and, at the same time, to maintain a single educational space, a system of federal educational and methodological associations was created, in which all universities in the country were represented. At the same time, basic universities ceased to be the only developers of educational programs and methods, turning into coordinators and organizers of educational processes. Thanks to this reform, it was possible to combine the traditions of scientific and methodological schools of basic universities with the intellectual capabilities and interests of all interested universities in Russia and employers without exception.

"Now, when the system is being restarted, there is a good opportunity to use the fundamental principles of FUMO activities that have proven their effectiveness, modernizing them in accordance with modern requirements," Andrey Rudskoy concluded. "It is especially important to preserve and strengthen the potential of engineering FUMOs as highly professional communities based on unique scientific and methodological schools."

"A good doctor doesn't have bite marks or scratches on his hands,"

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peoples'Friendship University of Russia –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

From a love for books about dinosaurs and National Geographic programs to a veterinarian. This is the path of a fourth-year student of the RUDN Agrarian and Technological Institute (specialization: Veterinary Science) Vagram Zadoyan. In honor of his professional holiday, which will be celebrated in Russia on August 31, he shared stories from his work at a veterinary clinic and gave advice to future colleagues.

Is choosing a profession a childhood dream?

Somehow, it all started in childhood: books about dinosaurs, TV programs like National Geographic and Animal Planet, and I also lived in the village for some time. In addition, in Armenia, where my roots are, there is a holiday called “Atam atik” — it is celebrated after a child’s first tooth appears. The essence of the holiday: objects symbolizing different professions are laid out in front of the baby: a microphone for an artist, a stethoscope for a doctor, scissors for a tailor, and so on. It is believed that the first object that a child chooses is associated with his future professional path. I chose a plush dog. So, apparently, I decided who I would become already in my deep childhood.

Why did you enter RUDN?

Because it is a beautiful university that unites many countries and professions. You can make friends with specialists from a variety of fields: lawyers, customs officers, pharmacists. In life, you need good friends and connections (smiles). But the main thing is that they give you knowledge that you really use in practice. Sometimes I review lectures and reread notes that I wrote in class. A doctor studies all his life and returns to the topics he has covered to reinforce everything for sure. Most often, I review lectures on surgery.

Have any of your teachers become mentors to you? If so, what did they teach you?

Yes, Sergey Aleksandrovich Yagnikov. He used to teach surgery here, now he has two clinics where he works. It so happened that he gave me a topic for my diploma thesis, which I am very happy about. I still remember his quotes. For example: "A good doctor has no bite marks or scratches on his hands" or "You have two hands, but one face" (about getting too close to an aggressive animal).

What year did you start working? And is it difficult to combine study with work?

I started working already at the end of the first semester of the first year. It was difficult at the beginning, as everything was new, but gradually I got into it: professional doctors explained things well. Sometimes I asked for time off from classes or went with other groups from the stream so as not to miss classes. The teachers at the university are understanding, as all veterinary students need practice, otherwise they will not be able to become doctors right after graduation. I still have enough energy to combine both, the battery does not run out.

Where do you work now and what are your responsibilities?

I am a veterinary assistant at the VetProfAlliance clinic. The help required from an assistant may vary. Sometimes you need to lift a 70-kilogram Tibetan mastiff, and in orthopedic surgery you even need to bend metal plates and break bones. The clinic allows you to work at appointments, in the intensive care unit, in intensive care, in surgery, on ultrasound and MRI. And so on, until you decide in which direction you want to develop and move.

What difficulties have you encountered in your work? How do you cope with emotional stress? After all, veterinarians often encounter animal suffering and the grief of their owners.

Of course, I had difficult patients, for example, with a weak heart or rare mutations and anomalies. There were wild and very aggressive animals. But when you work for a long time, you get used to everything, no matter how sad it may sound. There were also emotional burnouts, but at such moments, colleagues and friends from the university helped me. The clinics have their own psychologists who help employees in difficult times. I feel better after training in the gym and time spent with my family. Everyone copes in their own way.

A veterinarian's job is not only treating pets, but also communicating with their owners. Do you always manage to establish contact with people?

There were no particular problems with animal owners. As the doctors at my clinic tell me: "You are a sensitive and charming person, so people feel calmer with you." In difficult moments, you need to show understanding, compassion, and empathy. There are clinics and doctors who say that this is not professional, but I think this is a lie. We are used to seeing various injuries and illnesses in animals, but not people who come to us for help. Sometimes people can say too much in the heat of the moment, so you need to control yourself and know how to calm them down.

What is the most pleasant memory you have from your practice at the clinic?

One day, a granny came with a cat. I needed to give her pet an IV. I prepared everything in front of her, and she said, "Wow, they didn't teach us this in medical school in the first year, and you're such a good boy!" In gratitude for helping the cat, she treated me to jam and apples. It was very nice.

Do you have a pet yourself?

Yes, the cat Dymok. I took him from the clinic, they brought him and left him at the door, like in old movies they throw children on the porch. The next day, everyone was wondering what to do with him, in the end I decided to take him. My parents were against it, but now my dad drinks tea with him, and my mom cuddles him until she's blue in the face. One day, a strong wind blew a window in our house, and Dymok fell from the ninth floor. Everyone was in a panic, but I managed to calm down and examine my pet, after which I realized that everything would be fine. Dymok broke his femur, but the doctor and I patched him up. I often remember that day, was I scared? Yes, I was. But if everyone is scared, then who will pull themselves together and act? I'm glad that I learned not to lose their head in emergency situations. Dymok is fine now. He lives his own happy cat life, a couple of months ago he turned two years old.

What are your professional plans for the future?

I would like to open my own clinic and manage it. But first I need to get a taste of working with animals on the front lines, so for now I plan to delve into orthopedic surgery, working with bones, joints and ligaments.

Finally, give some advice to those who dream of entering veterinary science.

The main thing for a veterinarian is to be attentive, kind, but have an inner core. If you want to learn something, then approach teachers, doctors and ask what is unclear. This way they will understand that it is important and necessary for you. Do not be shy and believe in yourself! At first it will be difficult, and there will be thoughts that maybe this is not for me? This is temporary, it is worth finding a clinic with a cool team, good mentors and career growth, and you will take your words back.
