On September 1, the Polytechnic opened its doors to first-year students. This year, more than 5,000 people became part of the large Polytechnic family. At the festival "Day of the First", newly minted students, under the guidance of adapters, plunged into university life and got acquainted with the diversity of scientific and creative communities, as well as with the university's partners.
At the “Step to Science” station, first-year students talked with representatives of the Student Scientific Society, saw exclusive developments of polytechnics, studied the structure of robots and learned new scientific terms.
The Polytech Tower opened the “Step to the Future” station, where the kids could get acquainted with innovative student projects. Here they talked about how to create your own robot and develop a technology startup, how to build your professional development trajectory and find a team of like-minded people. And first-year students also had a unique opportunity to see the robot Honey Badger, who took third place ininternational championship "Battle of robots".
Gleb Sedov, a student at the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, came to enroll in the Polytechnic from the city of Stupino in the Moscow region, having 292 points for the Unified State Exam.
I read a lot about the Polytechnic University, talked to students about my chosen specialty (software engineering) and came to the conclusion: although it is more difficult here than in other universities, it is much better. At the festival, there is an opportunity to get cool prizes and communicate with people from various fields and organizations, – said Gleb.
At the Step to Creativity station, KVN players, PolyDance dancers, actors from the Glagol Theatre, the Polytechnic Student Theatre and participants in the Polytechnic Star project presented bright numbers and held interactive sessions with first-year students, charging the kids with positive emotions.
Activists of the SPbPU Dobro.Center and partners of the Volunteer Ecosystem organized the "Step to Good" platform. Together with them, first-year students were able to participate in various quizzes, trainings and games, learn about volunteer campaigns and take a mini-course on first aid.
The trade union organization "PROF" opened up new opportunities for first-year students. There were sports competitions, entertaining interactive events, and competitions from student associations.
The "Step to Communities" station was organized by the Center for Youth Trajectories. At various sites, one could learn more about the associations, try oneself as a community activist, and build one's own development trajectory within the framework of extracurricular activities. Everyone could find something for themselves.
"I entered the Polytechnic University on the recommendation of friends who were already studying at this university," shared Gleb Antonov, a student at the Physics and Mechanics Institute. "My specialty interested me because of its versatility and the abundance of applied and in-demand skills that can be acquired during the course of study. The festival turned out to be large-scale, the organizers and adapters tried very hard, thank you."
The Polytechnic University student teams presented six directions at the "Step to Labor" station. Here, builders taught how to build bridges, counselors taught how to dance, and archaeologists taught how to conduct excavations.
"Step to History" is a station of the Military History Club. First-year students were able to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of different eras. There was archery and knights in armor, search parties, stories about the Great Patriotic War and examples of equipment from those times. There were even historical dances!
At the “Step to Safety” station, the children were told how to protect themselves and others in any situation.
The Black Bears-Polytech club presented the Step to Sports platform. Newly minted polytechnicians were able not only to learn all about sports at Polytech and get acquainted with university teams, but also to test their strength in various sports.
The Career Development Department and the Competency Assessment and Development Center met with first-year students at the Step to Career station. The students were able to take part in useful games and learn what competencies they need to develop for a successful career.
The specialists of the Center for Work with Applicants at the “Step Back” station spoke about how to present the university in your school and how to help schoolchildren decide on their choice of profession.
Svetlana Vaneva came to St. Petersburg from Birobidzhan. With 287 points for the Unified State Exam, she became a student at the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity.
"My family is from St. Petersburg, and Polytech is one of the leading technical universities in the country, so I decided to enroll here. I like solving complex problems and seeing the results of my work. Software engineering is an ideal combination of creativity and logic. I want to not just be a programmer, but to become a specialist capable of creating high-quality IT solutions from scratch that will be used by thousands of people," the girl said. "Today I realized that in six hours you can get to know the university not as a set of buildings with long corridors, but as a huge, noisy, living organism. Today we took the most important step – we stopped being anonymous students from the admissions list. We became a community, part of a large family called Polytech."
For participating in all activities, the children received polycoins, which they could exchange for memorable prizes.
Also at the festival, first-year students met some of the Polytechnic University's partners. SBER held interactive events and gave out branded gifts, Samokat offered to play games and get a tasty prize, and Yandex.GO organized a driving school where you could learn how to drive an electric scooter.
