Moscow metro:

A Chinese-language version of the metro map has been introduced on Moscow-series trains running on nine lines of the Moscow metro. This was announced by Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

The Moscow metro has launched a Chinese-language map and opened a photo exhibition for Chinese New Year.

Now, passengers can use interactive screens to select their departure and arrival stations, calculate travel time, and plan the most convenient route with transfers. Station names have been translated in collaboration with native Chinese speakers using a combination of semantic translation and transliteration. This approach helps foreign tourists navigate the metro more quickly and remember station names more easily.

In addition, for the first time, 15 digital signs at Troitskaya Line stations feature Lunar New Year greetings in two languages—Chinese and Russian.

"Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has set us the goal of making travel even more comfortable for both Muscovites and tourists. Last year, we introduced a Chinese-language metro map—it can be downloaded from Moscow's Unified Transport Portal or obtained from over 30 Live Chat kiosks. This year, the map will appear on over 6,900 screens on Moskva trains. For the holiday, we've also prepared themed signs on the digital station signs on the Troitskaya Line. Moscow transport always welcomes foreign guests and is ready to welcome them," noted Maxim Liksutov.

As part of the "Chinese New Year in Moscow" festival, the Moscow Metro, together with Mostourism, the Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow, and the China National Tourism Office in Moscow, organized a photo exhibition on the upper level of the Delovoy Tsentr transport hub.

The exhibition introduces visitors to the traditions of celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. The photographs feature picturesque panoramas of Chinese cities, rituals welcoming spring, calligraphy, red lanterns, traditional decorations, and other elements of the festive culture.

"For the second year in a row, the metro is joining in the Chinese New Year celebrations. For the first time, a photo exhibition was held on the second floor of the Delovoy Tsentr transport hub to commemorate the event. Also, for the second time, a themed train dedicated to Chinese New Year traditions has been launched. Moscow transport continues to actively participate in the capital's cultural life," added Maxim Liksutov.

The exhibition runs until February 28. Admission is free during the opening hours of the Delovoy Tsentr transport hub.

Passengers can read poems by Chinese poets from various eras and learn how the holiday was celebrated in Moscow in past years.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, a new Chinese New Year-themed train has arrived on the Moscow Metro's Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line. The train will run until March 28.

The carriages are decorated with traditional Chinese cultural symbols and a color palette. Red and gold are associated with prosperity, joy, and good fortune. The train is decorated with images of festive lanterns, symbolizing light and renewal. The symbol of 2026, a fire horse, is displayed on the carriage walls, representing energy, movement, and forward momentum.

During the ride, passengers will be able to read poems about the festival from Chinese poets from various eras, dating back to the 7th century. The works are presented in both Russian and Chinese. Also displayed inside the train are photographs of past Chinese New Year celebrations in Moscow, illustrating how the event gradually became a part of the capital's cultural life.

The first and last cars feature a Chinese-language metro map, which was first introduced in 2025.

This is the second themed train created as part of the Moscow-China collaboration and dedicated to the Chinese New Year. The first such train entered service in 2025, when the carriages were primarily decorated with images of a dragon, one of China's most recognizable symbols.

"China is Moscow's strategic partner in Asia. The capital will account for over 40 percent of total Russian-Chinese trade by 2025. At the direction of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, we are developing cooperation in both industry and transport. This work is systemic. Our colleagues actively participate in the International Transport Summit, which we hold in Moscow every year. Together, we will continue to exchange experiences in the implementation of driverless transport, digital passenger services, artificial intelligence technologies, and other development areas. Moscow transport is always happy to cooperate with its good neighbor and is ready to welcome guests from China," noted Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

"This is the second time that a themed metro train has been launched as part of the Moscow Chinese New Year festival. This event has truly resonated with Muscovites because it creates a special atmosphere—you step inside the train and learn more about this much-talked-about event, which holds such colossal significance for the people of Asia, particularly China. It's also beautiful, vibrant, and joyful," added Maria Zakharova, official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Information and Press Department.

"In honor of the Chinese New Year, Moscow has relaunched a themed metro train—a joint project that will allow residents to discover the traditions of this friendly culture on familiar routes. The metro attracts visitors from China as a tourist attraction, and the themed train will be another interesting addition to the tourist program. Joint projects by the Moscow Government are increasing interest in the capital as a tourist destination. The annual growth rate of tourist flow from China to Moscow has doubled, with business tourists increasingly coming," noted Yevgeny Kozlov, First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Moscow Mayor and Government and Chairman of the Moscow Tourism Committee.

The launch of the themed train is part of the extensive program of the "Chinese New Year in Moscow" festival, which runs in the capital until March 1. A detailed schedule of events is available on the Russpass digital travel service. The festival is organized by the Moscow Government with the support of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Russia.

The project is being implemented as part of the city's "Winter in Moscow" season—the city's premier winter event, bringing together cultural, educational, and sporting activities for residents and visitors of the capital. The initiative aims to strengthen community and family ties, create an atmosphere of unity and mutual support, and develop international cultural cooperation.

Moscow Metro: Key Development Areas in 2026.

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

The Moscow Metro continues its large-scale development. Over the past 15 years, more than 260 km of lines, 127 stations, and 14 depots, including the Brateevo car repair plant, have been built or reconstructed on the Moscow Central Circle and the Moscow Metro.

In 2024, two new electric depots, Yuzhnoye and Stolbovo, were commissioned, improving the reliability and quality of rolling stock maintenance.

Construction of the first stage of the Troitskaya Line was completed in September. Tunneling for the second stage—the southern section, six stations long—began in October. The new section of the line will run along Kaluga Highway from Kommunarka to Troitsk.

In June, tunnel boring began on the Biryulevskaya line.

The extension of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line continues, from the existing Shchyolkovskaya station to Golyanovo station, which will become the new terminus.

Construction is also underway on the Dostoevskaya station of the Circle Line and the Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya Line.

Currently, 11 tunnel boring machines are simultaneously involved in the construction of Moscow metro tunnels.

"Under Moscow Mayor Sergei's leadership, over the past 15 years, the capital's road and transport infrastructure has become more comfortable, well-designed, and balanced for all city residents. The metro network has grown almost 1.7-fold, and the length of tracks has increased from just over 300 km to 560 km. In 2025 alone, four new stations and almost 10 km of tracks were opened," explained Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

By the end of 2032, it is planned to build approximately 83 km of new lines, 34 stations and three depots for the Moscow Metro.

The Moscow metro is expanding its continuous-connected track network, making rides quieter, smoother, and safer.

The Moscow Metro continues its planned modernization of its track infrastructure. New lines and upgraded sections are increasingly using continuous welded rails—so-called "velvet tracks"—which provide increased comfort and reliability for trains.

Today, the metro already has almost 400 km of continuous track. New lines are being built with long tracks, while existing lines are gradually replacing the connecting tracks as part of an infrastructure upgrade program.

The main advantages of continuous welded rail tracks for passengers are:

Increased travel comfort: trains run smoother and are virtually silent; increased safety and reliability: the absence of joints reduces rail wear and increases the stability of the track structure; increased speed due to improved track conditions.

A key role in the creation of continuous track is played by aluminothermic welding technology, which allows rails to be joined into a single continuous structure.

In 2024, four new stations on the Troitskaya metro line opened. Nearly 20 kilometers of continuous welded track were laid in both directions on this section. Overall, over 50 kilometers of continuous welded rails and 160,000 reinforced concrete half-ties were used on the existing section of the line from Novomoskovskaya to ZIL, along with hundreds of kilometers of cable lines for train control systems.

"To make trains run even smoother and quieter, we're modernizing the existing infrastructure. We're installing continuous welded rails on all new and many existing metro lines. We continue to make passenger travel more comfortable and safe, as instructed by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin," said Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor for Transport and Industry.

Comprehensive infrastructure modernization—updating rails, developing automation and telemetry systems, and upgrading rolling stock—has resulted in one of the best performance indicators in Europe: the average speed of trains on the Moscow metro, including stops, is 41 km/h, with a maximum permitted speed of up to 80 km/h.

The leaders in average travel speed were the Kalininskaya, Nekrasovskaya and Troitskaya lines.

The development of continuous welded rail tracks is part of the capital's transportation development strategy through 2030. This strategy includes completing the Troitskaya Line, opening the Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya and Biryulevskaya Lines, and commissioning new electric train depots.

The three-section Vityaz-Moscow trams will become autonomous.

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Moscow continues to implement cutting-edge transportation technologies. Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, announced that 20 three-section Vityaz-Moscow trams will be retrofitted with an energy storage system. This will allow them to operate on sections without overhead wires.

Autonomous driving technology was previously successfully implemented on the single-section "Lvenok-Moscow" trams, which already operate on routes T1 and No. 5. Autonomous solutions are now being scaled up to accommodate larger-capacity rolling stock.

What will change:

On sections without overhead lines, both single-section and three-section trams will be able to operate. The high-capacity Vityaz-Moscow trams will operate on Moscow's T1 and T2 tram diameters. The load on the infrastructure will be reduced: up to 40% of the energy consumed will be recovered through a recuperation system.

"Following Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin's instructions, we continue to implement modern technological solutions in public transport. The three-section Vityaz-Moscow trams will be able to travel over 4 km autonomously thanks to a new energy storage system. The Moscow Tram Diameter T1 has already proven its effectiveness, and the launch of more spacious trams will further improve travel comfort for tens of thousands of passengers," noted Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

The technology has already been tested in practice: one three-section "Vityaz-Moscow" tram has been operating reliably in autonomous mode since 2024.

A new season of the "Music in the Metro" project has started in Moscow.

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

The capital has launched a new season of the "Music in the Metro" project—one of the largest cultural formats integrated into the city's transportation system. Artists from various genres are once again performing for passengers at metro stations, the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD), and other public transportation facilities.

Today, the project brings together over 400 musicians—vocalists, instrumentalists, and ensembles. Both emerging performers and established artists can be heard at the "Music in the Metro" venues. This year, interest in the project grew significantly: over two thousand applications were submitted—a third more than last season. As usual, participants were selected by a professional jury based on in-person auditions.

Over the years, the project has come a long way: while the first season featured around 30 musicians and performances took place at just three venues, today concerts are held at 40 locations. These include metro stations, including the Big Circle Line, MCD facilities, the Moscow Transport Pavilion, the Severnye Vorota International Bus Station, and, during the warmer months, the Northern and Southern River Terminals.

Last year, the project became a key location in the large-scale celebratory program celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Moscow Metro, attracting the attention of renowned performers. In 2026, when "Music in the Metro" turns 10, passengers will also be treated to special concerts by popular musicians.

At the same time, the "Art in the Metro" project is developing in the capital, bringing together artists, sculptors, and illustrators. Since 2024, more than 300 artists have participated. Eleven spaces at metro stations are available, and a permanent exhibition space has been opened in the passageway between Sokolniki stations on the Big Circle and Sokolnicheskaya lines.

"The 'Music in the Metro' project has grown from 30 participants in the first season to over 400 musicians today, and the number of venues has increased more than 13-fold. At the request of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the capital's transport complex continues to develop creative initiatives in the city's infrastructure," noted Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Moscow transport is operating as usual despite heavy snowfalls.

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Moscow — Despite heavy snowfall, Moscow's public transportation continues to operate as usual. All services have been switched to enhanced operations to ensure passenger comfort and safety.

Particular attention is paid to the smooth operation of the Moscow Metro. Metro employees work around the clock to clear snow from tracks leading to depots and rails in open areas. The condition of the track infrastructure directly affects the stability, comfort, and safety of travel for more than 8 million passengers daily.

A range of measures are being taken to combat snowfall. Specialized equipment equipped with powerful brushes and compressed air systems is deployed on tracks, switches, and in the contact rail area. These machines are capable of clearing snow drifts up to 0.65 meters high. In areas where the use of equipment is impossible, snow removal is carried out manually—over 600 employees are involved in the work at the 23 metro depots alone. Special chemical treatments are applied to specific areas to prevent the formation of ice.

In total, over 3,000 employees and specialized equipment have been deployed to clear snow near metro stations, depot parking tracks, tram stops, and bus stations. Platforms and adjacent areas are being cleared on the Moscow Central Diameters. City services are also clearing bus stops and turnaround areas for buses and electric buses.

The rolling stock is fully prepared for operation in adverse weather conditions. All trams, buses, and electric buses undergo mandatory technical inspections before entering service. Drivers have received additional training on operating vehicles in snowy conditions.

"In accordance with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin's instructions, we ensure comfortable and safe travel in any weather. Maintaining the road infrastructure is our key priority. By creating significant reserve capacity, the capital's public transportation is always ready to accommodate additional passengers. Dispatch services monitor route operations and weather changes in real time, and city services are clearing snow, prioritizing transport," noted Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Transport and Industry.

The operation of urban transport and infrastructure is under constant control.

More than 3.8 million trips were made by passengers on the T1 route.

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

During the operation of MTD:

🔹 Modern Lvenok-Moscow trams have made over 23,000 trips.

🔹 The total mileage along the route was 617 thousand km.

🔹 Daily peak passenger traffic increased to 78,000 trips, which is 1.5 times higher than our forecasts.

T1 operates according to the standards of an above-ground street metro: minimal intervals, convenient transfers to the metro and the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD), and a smooth ride of autonomous cars. This approach allows city residents and visitors to save time during travel.

"The First Moscow Tram Diameter has become the most popular tram route. In two months, Muscovites have taken over 3.8 million trips on it. This result demonstrates that the diametric tram route format, with its minimal intervals and modern trams, is extremely convenient for passengers. At the direction of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, we continue to develop the tram network and integrate it into the city's unified transport ecosystem to make trips even faster and more comfortable," noted Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

🔹 The first "Moscow-2026" trains have hit the roads.

More than 350 carriages of the most modern “Moscow-2026” series will appear in the Moscow metro this year.

The Moscow-2026 series trains are among the most technologically advanced in the world, setting new standards for comfort and safety. They are manufactured using domestically produced components. The carriages retain the advantages of previous series trains: powerful air conditioning systems, wide doors and convenient inter-carriage walkways, adaptive lighting, color-matched backlighting, USB and Type-C ports, and numerous information screens. Compared to the "Numbered" series, the maximum capacity of the train has increased by 10 percent, and the doors are 32 percent wider.

The "Moscow-2026" train also features updated plastic trim on some interior elements, as well as glass on the entryway handrails and the rearview camera housing. The futuristic headlights have been redesigned—the headlights are now more elongated, appearing as an extension of the light strip at the front of the train. The design of the passenger-driver communication unit, including for passengers with limited mobility, has also been updated.

"Today, the Moscow Metro is a leader in train renewal among European and American metro systems. The share of modern rolling stock has grown to almost 80%—as recently as 2010, this figure did not exceed 13%. This is all thanks to the large-scale and systematic work we are carrying out at the direction of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. We plan that by 2030, over 90% of the cars in the Moscow Metro will be modern," said Maxim Liksutov.
