Virtual world of a real landmark: residents of 964 Russian cities visited the VDNKh metaverse

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

A year ago, users from all over Russia were given the opportunity to get into VDNKh metaverse. Over the entire period, the project page has been visited more than 208 thousand times. This was reported by the capital Department of Information Technology.

"This is a unique interregional project that combines interactive, educational and cultural components. Guests of the VDNKh metaverse are separated by thousands of kilometers and different time zones: 45 percent of visitors visit the project page from Moscow, another seven percent from St. Petersburg, almost four percent from Nizhny Novgorod, while among the users there are residents of the Far Eastern city of Kholmsk, the city of Shchigry in the Kursk region, the city of Usolye in the Perm region, the Chuvash city of Tsivilsk and almost a thousand other places," said Anastasia Sharova, head of the exhibition activities department of the capital's Department of Information Technology.

In the metaverse, you can walk or ride a scooter along the paths of a virtual copy of the exhibition, look into several pavilions, go on a tour of the past, present and future of VDNKh, honor the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, visit the digitalized pavilions of the International Exhibition and Forum "Russia".

The digital copy contains a large amount of educational content: about the exhibition itself, its pavilions and expositions. Specialists recreated 114 objects and 566 exhibits: each of them can be examined, and its history can be found in the information sheet.

The metaVDNKh audience lives all over Russia — from Baltiysk to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and from Norilsk to Derbent. Over the year, the metaverse page was visited by users from 964 cities.

Almost 25 percent of visitors are users under 25. About 21 percent are guests from 25 to 34 years old. Young people are attracted by the digital format and interactivity: thanks to game mechanics, obtaining information about the history of attractions turns into a quest.

To walk through the VDNKh metaverse, you don't need to buy a ticket, get ready, and plan a route to the desired location. You can find yourself at the digital copy of the Friendship of Nations fountain without leaving your home: any device and an Internet connection are enough. This makes the attraction accessible to all users, regardless of their age and health. Almost 11 percent of visitors are over 55 years old, and another 16 percent are between 45 and 54 years old. The online walk format allows you to see the alleys, pavilions, and fountains from a new angle, and compare how much the exhibition area has changed since your last visit to Moscow.

Almost 28 percent of the audience is made up of guests aged 35 to 44. This generation has witnessed the transition from the pre-digital era to the modern era with its opportunities, when people can no longer imagine their lives without smartphones and the Internet.

MetaVDNKh offers five immersion formats to choose from: you can stroll through the digital space in the company of friends from all over the country, go on a gamified excursion, look into six digital pavilions of the Russia exhibition, join the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and honor the memory of the heroes by launching a virtual fireworks display, and also watch archival war footage.

For a walk or tour of the 3D copy of the exhibition, you must book in advance.project website. If you download metaVDNKh to your computer, you can walk along the digital alleys at any time.

To join the project "Victory Salute", no additional registration is required. Users create a virtual fireworks display on any device in 10-15 minutes and launch it on the Central Alley of VDNKh. Since the project was launched in May this year, the page "Victory Fireworks" has been visited more than 74.5 thousand times.

MetaVDNKh is based on a 3D model of the exhibition from a digital twin of the city, to which the smallest details of buildings and interiors have been added using gaming industry technologies. The digital twin of Moscow is a large-scale platform that, since 2019, has been helping to plan the construction of residential, industrial and social facilities, make management decisions and monitor the implementation of significant city projects.

The capabilities of the VDNKh metaverse were highly praised at the Moscow Seasons festival, which took place in Beijing from June 12 to 15. Visitors were introduced to a virtual copy of the Moskino cinema park, saw the city's iconic landmarks from a bird's eye view, walked around a virtual copy of VDNKh, and launched fireworks on the Main Alley.

You can learn more about the evolution of IT technologies in the capital – from the launch of the first round-the-clock server in the Moscow City Hall building to the creation of a digital twin of the city and the meta-VDNKh – from the first episode of the popular science mini-series "Moscow in Digital".

The creation and operation of digital platforms for providing residents with public services in various sectors of the social sphere correspond to the objectives of the national project "Data Economy".
