SEOUL, January 2 (Xinhua) — About 122 people were evacuated after smoke was reported on board a domestic flight from Jeju to Pohang in South Korea, Newsis News reported on Friday.

The incident occurred on board Jin Air flight LJ436, scheduled to operate from Jeju to Pohang, at approximately 12:25 PM local time. It was determined that smoke entered the aircraft as passengers were boarding.

XI'AN, January 2 (Xinhua) — The first China-Europe train of 2026 departed from Xi'an International Port Station, the capital of Northeast China's Shaanxi Province, on Thursday. The train, operating along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), will cross the border at Khorgos, travel through Kazakhstan and the Caspian Sea, and arrive in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

This train, fully loaded with 45 containers of photovoltaic modules, is not only the first China-Europe train departure in 2026, but also the first train to depart from China on the TITR in 2026.

"The China-Europe (Xi'an) train has created a convenient international logistics channel for cargo transportation, and compared to traditional sea freight, it reduces transit time from two months to 11 days. This has significantly reduced logistics costs for enterprises," said Du Ning, an employee of the Northwest Electric Power Design Institute of China Power Engineering Consulting Group (CPECC), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC).

Xi'an is actively involved in the construction of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and is working with relevant parties to continuously promote cost reduction and efficiency improvements. Train departures along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route are currently increasing in frequency, and transit times have been reduced from 15-23 days to approximately 11 days.

In 2019, the first train was launched from Xi'an on the TITR, and as of the end of November 2025, a total of 466 trains had been operated from Xi'an on this route.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) — Song Tao, director of the Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee for Work with Taiwan and the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, called on Friday on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to work hand in hand to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and national reunification.

Vladivostok, January 2 (Xinhua) — A fire broke out in a two-story private home in the Yakut village of Suntar. Firefighters found five dead while extinguishing the fire, TASS reported on Friday.

The victims included three children and two adults. The fire spread over an area of 24 square meters. Six firefighters and two units of local fire equipment were called in to extinguish the blaze.

Sydney, January 2 (Xinhua) — A Chinese citizen has died at sea in Sydney, Australia. The Chinese Consulate General in the city announced this on Friday.
