CARACAS, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on television Thursday that he is ready if Washington wants serious talks on an agreement to combat drug trafficking.

N. Maduro said that many people, even in the United States, do not believe the narrative about drug production in Venezuela, noting that both Venezuela and the United States need to have a serious dialogue based on facts.

He also said that Venezuela would accept US investments at any time, including investments from the American oil company Chevron, if the United States needed Venezuelan oil.

Venezuelan Vice President and Oil Minister Delcy Rodriguez confirmed on social media in December 2025 that a Chevron tanker carrying crude oil had legally left Venezuela and was headed to the United States.

In recent months, the United States has maintained a significant military presence in the Caribbean, primarily off the coast of Venezuela, ostensibly to "combat drug trafficking." Venezuela has denounced this as a thinly veiled attempt to overthrow its government.

The US military has sunk nearly 30 "drug-smuggling vessels" in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, killing more than 100 people. –0–

XI'AN, January 2 (Xinhua) — The first China-Europe train of 2026 departed from Xi'an International Port Station, the capital of Northeast China's Shaanxi Province, on Thursday. The train, operating along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), will cross the border at Khorgos, travel through Kazakhstan and the Caspian Sea, and arrive in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

This train, fully loaded with 45 containers of photovoltaic modules, is not only the first China-Europe train departure in 2026, but also the first train to depart from China on the TITR in 2026.

"The China-Europe (Xi'an) train has created a convenient international logistics channel for cargo transportation, and compared to traditional sea freight, it reduces transit time from two months to 11 days. This has significantly reduced logistics costs for enterprises," said Du Ning, an employee of the Northwest Electric Power Design Institute of China Power Engineering Consulting Group (CPECC), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC).

Xi'an is actively involved in the construction of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and is working with relevant parties to continuously promote cost reduction and efficiency improvements. Train departures along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route are currently increasing in frequency, and transit times have been reduced from 15-23 days to approximately 11 days.

In 2019, the first train was launched from Xi'an on the TITR, and as of the end of November 2025, a total of 466 trains had been operated from Xi'an on this route.

According to the data of the state-owned corporation China Railways (CR), in January-November 2025, the total number of freight train departures from Xi'an along the China-Europe international railway freight transportation routes reached 5,671, an increase of 20.5 percent year-on-year. -0-

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) — Song Tao, director of the Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee for Work with Taiwan and the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, called on Friday on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to work hand in hand to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and national reunification.

Song Tao made this statement in a New Year's message published in the first issue of the 2026 journal "Relations Across the Taiwan Straits." In his message, he conveyed New Year's wishes and sincere congratulations to the people of Taiwan.

Song Tao said that, adhering to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, in 2026 the Chinese mainland will continue to expand exchanges and cooperation and promote comprehensive development across the Taiwan Strait, firmly oppose separatist activities seeking "Taiwan independence" and external interference, and ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region.

"We are ready to engage in dialogue and consultation with political parties, organizations and people from all walks of life in Taiwan on issues of cross-Strait relations and national reunification based on the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus," he said.

According to him, in 2025, relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait had advanced despite difficulties, gaining momentum and strength towards national reunification. He emphasized that it had become easier for Taiwan residents to travel to the Chinese mainland, and the number of young people from Taiwan visiting the Chinese mainland had increased significantly.

He noted that efforts have been intensified to ensure high-quality development of the Cross-Sea Integration Development Demonstration Zone and provide equal opportunities for Taiwanese compatriots and enterprises on the Chinese mainland, while national sovereignty and territorial integrity have been reliably protected.

Song Tao called on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to shoulder their historical responsibilities to unite in the fight against separatism and promote the reunification of the motherland. -0-

Oslo, January 2 (Xinhua) — Denmark's "closest ally" should not treat the country and its people as something "to be bought and possessed," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Thursday evening amid renewed speculation about Greenland's ownership.

Without mentioning the US directly, she said the past year had been marked by "threats, pressure and condescending talk" from "Denmark's closest ally for life."

Speaking at her official residence, M. Frederiksen addressed a range of issues, including the economy and social security. She also spoke out forcefully about the geopolitical pressures facing the country, particularly over the Greenland issue.

"Now there's a conflict again over Greenland—over the [Danish] kingdom," M. Frederiksen said of the renewed diplomatic tensions. She criticized the "desire to conquer another country, another people," calling such a mentality outdated.

"We bear our responsibility in the world. We are not seeking any kind of conflict," the head of government said. "But let no one doubt: no matter what happens, we will firmly distinguish between right and wrong."

As a reminder, on December 21, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy for Greenland, which led to renewed diplomatic tensions between Washington and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in gaining control of Greenland, saying he would not rule out using "military or economic coercion" to achieve this goal. –0–
