Maseru, January 11 (Xinhua) — China is willing to work with Lesotho to strengthen exchanges of governance experience, enhance coordination in multilateral affairs, and advance the bilateral strategic partnership. This was stated on Saturday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, who is visiting Lesotho.

During the meeting, Wang Yi congratulated Lesotho on its 60th anniversary of independence, which is celebrated this year, and praised the Lesotho government's efforts to prioritize economic development and put the African country on a path of sustainable growth.

Since the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FCAC) in 2024, the two sides have advanced cooperation under the 10 Partnership Action Plans announced at the FCAC and successfully implemented a series of key projects to effectively promote the development and revitalization of Lesotho, Wang said.

China is willing to work with Lesotho to strengthen exchanges of governance experience, enhance coordination in multilateral affairs, and promote the further development of the strategic partnership between the two countries, he added.

Calling on both sides to firmly support each other, Wang Yi said China will speed up the implementation of the zero tariff policy for African countries including Lesotho, expand bilateral trade, investment and industrial cooperation, promote greater market access for Lesotho's products to the Chinese market, and continue to support the country's national development.

Wang Yi said China will continue to firmly support African countries, uphold justice for the Global South, including Lesotho, oppose unilateralism and bullying, and work together to build a community with a shared future for humanity.

S. Matekane, in turn, stated that Lesotho values its friendship with China and the strategic partnership between the two countries, and also expressed gratitude to China for its valuable support for the development of African countries, including Lesotho.

Lesotho firmly adheres to the one-China principle and firmly supports China in safeguarding its core interests, he said, noting that his country is willing to strengthen strategic mutual trust with China, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges, jointly implement the outcomes of the FCAC Beijing Summit, and deepen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, manufacturing and energy.

S. Matekane emphasized that China's zero-tariff policy on African products will give new impetus to Lesotho's development. He also expressed Lesotho's readiness to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with China on multilateral platforms such as BRICS to jointly address global challenges.

BEIJING, January 11 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Commerce will continue to promote consumption and expand opening-up as part of its 2026 priorities, according to the results of a two-day national commerce conference that concluded on Sunday.

A top priority for the country's commercial system is to implement a dedicated campaign to stimulate consumption, with a focus on developing the "Shop in China" brand. Efforts will be focused on accelerating the development of new growth areas in services consumption, optimizing trade-in policies for consumer goods, creating an internationalized consumption environment, developing digital, eco-friendly, and health-related consumption, and identifying the potential of emerging markets across the country.

In terms of trade, measures will be taken to improve trade in goods, expand trade in services and their exports, and innovatively develop digital and green trade to create the “Export to China” brand.

To attract foreign investment and strengthen the "Invest in China" brand, China will expand the opening up of its service sector, enhance investment promotion, and improve the service system for foreign entrepreneurs and investors.

China will approach its expansion of opening-up by adhering to high-standard international trade rules, upgrade pilot free trade zones and the Hainan Free Trade Port, and ensure that key exhibition events are held at an appropriate level.

In order to effectively manage foreign investment, work will be carried out to achieve rational and orderly deployment of cross-border production and supply chains, improve overseas service networks, deepen cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative, and strengthen risk control and prevention. -0-

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump has been briefed in recent days on new options for military strikes against Iran, The New York Times reported Saturday, citing several anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

D. Trump "has not yet made a final decision, but officials have said he is seriously considering authorizing a strike in response to the Iranian regime's efforts to suppress demonstrations fueled by widespread economic discontent," the report said.

The American leader was offered a number of options, including strikes on non-military targets in Tehran.

Earlier on Saturday, he wrote on social media that "Iran is yearning for FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The US is ready to help!!!"

D. Trump and other senior US officials have repeatedly warned that Washington will take action if peaceful protesters are killed in Iran.

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned what it called "interventionist and misleading" statements by the Trump administration, saying they reflect Washington's continued hostility toward the Iranian people.

Since late December, protests have erupted in several Iranian cities due to the sharp decline of the rial and prolonged economic hardship. Iranian authorities have acknowledged the demonstrations and expressed their commitment to addressing the economic problems, warning against violence and vandalism.

In a televised address on Friday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called on the Iranian people to remain united, saying some protesters were trying to please the United States.

He also advised the American leader to focus on problems in his own country, adding that Iran “will not back down” in the face of “saboteurs.” –0–

Moscow, January 11 (Xinhua) – There was no presidential security detail with Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, when they were kidnapped, Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov said on Saturday.

"I can tell you straight: the situation is such that at the time of his capture, there was essentially no one near him. "Near" means in the immediate vicinity," the diplomat said on Soloviev Live.

The diplomat also noted that at the time of the Venezuelan president's kidnapping, the US Army was firing "such a powerful, hurricane-like barrage that, in essence, they were firing at anything that moved." Air defense early warning stations in Venezuela were experiencing communication difficulties during the US attack.
