QINGDAO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — The China-SCO Regional Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone (hereinafter referred to as the "China-SCO Demonstration Zone"), located in the coastal city of Qingdao in east China's Shandong Province, retained its position as the country's leader in terms of TIR transport shipments in 2025.

According to data released by the zone's management on Wednesday, 435 TIR-marked trucks departed from here in 2025 (a 53.7 percent increase year-on-year), transporting 7,657.7 tons of goods (a 76.3 percent increase) or 280 million yuan (approximately $40 million, a 43.3 percent increase) in value. These figures placed the zone first among all regions in the country providing TIR transport services.

TIR is an international road transport system. Under this system, cargo is sealed at the starting point of the route and inspected only upon arrival at the destination. At intermediate border crossings, border crossing officers merely verify the TIR carnet data and the customs stamp for the vehicle. This reduces transit time and mitigates potential risks associated with administrative customs procedures and cargo damage. China joined the TIR Convention in July 2016.

The China-SCO Demonstration Zone opened its first international route under the TIR system in September 2023, and over the next two years, the number of routes has grown to four, including China-Russia, China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan, China-Kazakhstan, and China-Belarus. A total of 727 trucks carrying 12,000 tons of cargo valued at 480 million yuan have been shipped along these routes.

Currently, there are 31 companies in the zone certified for TIR transport services, with fleets totaling 552 trucks. The range of goods they transport exceeds 40 items, including food products and electronic devices.

The operator of the China-SCO Demonstration Zone intends to actively explore the possibility of opening new TIR transport routes aimed at the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in order to form a seamless and highly efficient international logistics corridor based on the zone. -0-

Yerevan, January 14 (Xinhua) — Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday night. The two sides approved a joint statement on the U.S.-Armenia framework for the implementation of the Trump Roadmap for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported.

A. Mirzoyan and M. Rubio noted the active development of the strategic partnership between Armenia and the United States. Following the meeting, the parties noted that the joint statement on the framework program for implementing the TRIPP project is a new step toward fulfilling the commitments reached on August 8 of last year to promote lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

"The Framework Program defines a concrete path for the implementation of the TRIPP project, which is designed to ensure uninterrupted multimodal transit through Armenia. By connecting the mainland of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and creating a crucial link in the Trans-Caspian trade route, the TRIPP project is expected to create mutual benefits in terms of international and domestic connectivity for the Republic of Armenia," the statement reads.

The TRIPP implementation framework is reported to reflect the importance of the principles approved last summer in Washington for the overall success of this project. These principles concern respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and reciprocity in the implementation of TRIPP, the ultimate goal of which is to strengthen the prosperity and security of Armenia and Azerbaijan, facilitate American trade by expanding regional trade and connectivity, and create new transit opportunities linking Central Asia and the Caspian Sea with Europe.

According to the framework program, a TRIPP development company will be created, with the United States holding a controlling stake and Armenia exercising substantive control. The company will be responsible for developing the project for a preliminary term of 49 years. Armenia intends to offer the United States a 74 percent stake in the company, retaining 26 percent. This partnership is expected to be extended for another 50 years, with an additional ownership stake granted to the Armenian government, bringing the Armenian stake to 49 percent.

Changchun, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — The number of people crossing the border in both directions through China's Hunchun border crossing exceeded 700,000 last year, setting a new historical record, according to data from the local border control agency.

As the only land border crossing on the Chinese-Russian border in Jilin Province (Northeast China), the Hunchun checkpoint is connected to Vladivostok, Zarubino, Posyet and other settlements in Russia by direct transport links.

A trip to the city of Hunchun via the checkpoint of the same name during the New Year holidays has become a popular pastime for many residents of Russia's neighboring regions. Here, they can immerse themselves more deeply in traditional Chinese culture and enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine.

In recent years, in order to attract an increasing number of Russian tourists, Hunchun has made continuous efforts to optimize its tourism infrastructure, improve the quality of its tourism services, and develop new, original tourist routes and products.

At the same time, a simplified visa policy has also significantly boosted the boom in cross-border tourism. In 2025, China and Russia launched a mutual visa-free regime, covering citizens of the two countries holding regular passports. -0-

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian on Wednesday criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration for not only failing to resist but actively indulging in blatant intimidation and plunder by external forces when faced with them.

She made the statement in response to a request to comment on a report that the US and Taiwan are close to reaching a trade deal that would cut US import tariffs on Taiwanese goods to 15 percent, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) intends to invest in building at least five more semiconductor factories in the US.

The island's public has expressed concern that the DPP administration's strategy is to trade investment for tariff concessions, the report said.

The so-called agreement represents economic robbery of Taiwan by the United States through high tariffs, which is tantamount to a scheme to extract funds from Taiwanese industry, Zhu Fenglian said at a regular departmental press conference.

She added that this not only exposes the selfish and selfish nature of the US, but also reveals its sinister intentions of using Taiwan as a pawn.

The DPP administration not only does not resist, but also voluntarily offers Taiwan's key technological advantages as bargaining chips to please external powers and win their favor, Zhu Fenglian noted.

Noting that the DPP administration had effectively given up even before the tariff talks began, making ever greater concessions, Zhu Fenglian emphasized that such an approach would only undermine Taiwan's economic prospects and harm the long-term interests of the island's residents. -0-
