Beijing, January 20 (Xinhua) — China has decided to nominate Xiamen to host the Secretariat of the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity Beyond National Jurisdiction and informed the UN Secretary-General of the decision on January 16, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced on Tuesday.

The agreement, which involves 82 countries, including China, and the European Union, entered into force on January 17.

Answering a question about this at a regular press briefing, Guo Jiakun said the agreement is a landmark international treaty within the UN, and its entry into force opens a new chapter in global maritime governance and demonstrates the victory of multilateralism.

“As one of the first countries to sign the agreement and one of the first contracting parties, China welcomes its entry into force and expresses its congratulations on this occasion,” the Chinese diplomat noted.

He pointed out that China consistently adheres to genuine multilateralism, supports the international system with the UN at its core, and places particular emphasis on the conservation and sustainable use of ocean resources. He said Xiamen, known as the "Garden City on the Sea," has a long history, a beautiful and livable environment, is open and inclusive, and is renowned for its fertile ground for innovation and a vibrant blue economy.
