In Moscow, an AI service has begun automatically detecting osteoporosis in the early stages.

In Moscow, an artificial intelligence (AI) service has begun automatically detecting osteoporosis in its early stages. This is a disease that causes bone density to decrease. The neural network can detect its signs in the early stages. It analyzes and identifies pathological features in CT scans performed for other clinical indications. This was reported by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

"We are consistently integrating artificial intelligence technologies into our daily practice, for example, in analyzing X-rays for various clinical indications. This approach to additional pathology screening allows us to prevent problems early, rather than dealing with the consequences. We recently introduced automated osteoporosis screening in CT scans. It detects the disease in its early stages, when a person isn't even aware of the problem, while it's developing asymptomatically. This eliminates the need for a separate examination, which reduces radiation exposure. Furthermore, we can begin treatment earlier, reducing the risk of severe fractures," explained Anastasia Rakova.

The service automatically analyzes CT scans and independently detects signs of osteoporosis. The neural network highlights all potentially problematic areas of bone tissue with red or orange indicators.

"Osteoporosis is a metabolic skeletal disease characterized by decreased bone mass and disruption of bone microarchitecture. Its insidious nature is that it often goes unnoticed until serious complications and injuries develop. These services work with existing studies and help detect important changes in bone tissue. A neural network highlights abnormal areas in a medical image, performs the necessary measurements, and generates a text description. Comprehensive AI services can simultaneously detect up to 14 pathologies in a single study. This approach will allow Muscovites undergoing examinations for various clinical indications to receive additional insurance against one of the most subtle and dangerous age-related diseases," emphasized the chief physician of the Moscow Diagnostics and Telemedicine Center. Department of Health Yuri Vasiliev.

Artificial intelligence helps doctors detect pathologies more quickly at early stages and improve the accuracy of imaging measurements. The final diagnosis is always made by a specialist, who takes into account the analysis results and the radiologist's description of the image.

Today, Moscow doctors can use over 60 AI services to detect disease signs across 43 clinical areas. Furthermore, the healthcare system uses 12 integrated solutions that simultaneously identify multiple pathologies in a single medical image. AI services have already analyzed nearly two million CT scans.

An experiment on the use of innovative computer vision technologies in healthcare has been underway since 2020. This is being carried out by specialists from the Moscow Diagnostics and Telemedicine Center. Department of Health together with the city Department of Information TechnologyThe project is in line with the goals of the Moscow healthcare development strategy through 2030 and aims to improve the quality and accessibility of medical care for Moscow residents.

The unmanned cleaning robot "Pixel" is operating in Moscow parks and on several streets. It was developed by the Moscow-based company "Avtonomika," a resident of the Lomonosov cluster. The first units were deployed in 2023 and were used for unmanned cleaning in the city center. The company currently has over 35 operational cleaning robots and several prototypes.

In 2024–2025, the Moscow Innovation Cluster, subordinate to the capital’s Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development, conducted an experiment with year-round robotic cleaning. Innovative assistants maintained 50th Anniversary of October Park and the Raduga, Khodynskoye Pole, Kuzminki-Lyublino, and Sokolniki ponds. The robots were successfully tested on urban areas covering a total of 618 hectares. The experiment demonstrated that the "Pixels" provided high-quality cleaning of all hard surfaces and performed approximately 50 percent of the tasks required for park maintenance, including snow removal and path washing.

Thanks to its attachments, Pixel can operate year-round, reducing the need for dedicated personnel by up to 30 percent. The robot currently carries out regular cleaning in several city parks and the Skolkovo Innovation Center.

Pixel was designed, entirely engineered, and assembled in Moscow. It combines modern design, cutting-edge technology, and innovative solutions. Pixel can reach speeds of up to 10 kilometers per hour and operate for up to 16 hours a day with intermittent recharges, cleaning up to two hectares of land—2.5 times more than other robots.

The developers also paid attention to safety. They equipped the robot with a multi-sensor navigation system and computer vision technology. This allows Pixel to confidently navigate its environment and avoid collisions.

In 2026, Moscow plans to expand the use of innovative technology and test new types of attachments. These include leaf and pine blowers and snow removal and de-icing equipment. Furthermore, the robot is also planned for use in other industries, such as repair work, construction, and landscaping.

Pixel solves the labor shortage problem and opens up vast opportunities for new professions. For example, even people with limited mobility can remotely control and monitor the robot. The implementation of such technologies allows for the digitalization and automation of cleaning processes, providing full control over task execution and saving on consumables. The use of an electric motor makes the robot environmentally friendly and comfortable for city residents.

Earlier, Sergei Sobyanin told the President of Russia about the development of the capital's unmanned systemsThanks to the synthesis of domestic scientific, educational, and industrial potential, a new industry is being created in the city. Vladimir Putin noted that Moscow is the undisputed leader in creating an economy based on unmanned systems, and this experience should be shared with other regions.

The capital has summed up the results of the first two months of operation of the first Moscow Tram Diameter (MTD).

This innovative form of transportation, operating to the standards of an above-ground street metro, has demonstrated impressive popularity. The modern, autonomous "Lvenok-Moscow" trams have completed over 23,000 trips in two months of operation. During this time, they have traveled a total of 617,000 kilometers—that's more than 15 full laps around the planet.

"The First Moscow Tram Diameter has become the most popular tram route. In two months, Muscovites have taken over 3.8 million trips on it. This result demonstrates that the diametric tram route format, with its minimal intervals and modern trams, is extremely convenient for passengers. Following Sobyanin's instructions, we continue to develop the tram network and integrate it into the city's unified transport ecosystem to make trips even faster and more comfortable," noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Maxim Liksutov.

The Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) provides transportation links between several districts of the city and offers passengers convenient transfers to metro stations and the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD). Following the launch of the independent customs operations regime, the Hainan Freeport has seen a surge in business activity.

HAIKOU, January 21 (Xinhua) — Business activity at the Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP) increased in the first month of the launch of independent customs operations throughout the port, resulting in an increase in company registrations and a rise in trade volumes of both regular goods and services, as well as duty-free products. This was announced at a press conference held last Monday.

During the reporting period, a total of 21,000 new companies were registered, a 16.42 percent increase year-on-year. Of these, 331 were foreign-invested, a 13 percent increase year-on-year, demonstrating growing market viability and investor confidence.

The political dividends generated by independent customs operations are already being translated into concrete benefits for market participants both domestically and internationally, said Cui Weijie, deputy head of the China Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, a think tank under the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

“Chinese enterprises can use the Hainan Free Trade Zone for more convenient access to global markets, while for foreign companies it can become a springboard for entering the mainland market,” he added.

As a reminder, the independent customs operations regime began operating throughout the Hainan Free Trade Zone on December 18. It provides for "freer first-line access," meaning freer trade between Hainan and areas beyond China's customs border, and "regulated second-line access," meaning maintaining standard customs controls in mainland China.

As noted at the aforementioned press conference, in the first month of the new customs regime, the total value of goods imported at zero “first-line” tariffs increased by 38.9 percent year-on-year to 753 million yuan (about 108 million US dollars), while the amount of unpaid import customs duties increased by 194.6 percent to 109 million yuan.

The value of processed and value-added goods sold domestically through the second line increased by 37.2 percent, including goods worth nearly 85.87 million yuan, with the tariff rebate amounting to 3.32 million yuan.

Companies say the new rules are delivering concrete cost savings at the operational level.

Hainan Hongyan Food Co., Ltd., located in Yangpu Economic Development Zone (Yangpu EDZ), which is a leader in implementing the preferential policies of Hainan FTA, including tariff reduction and incentives, mainly imports beef from abroad, processes it into dried meat and sells it duty-free in the domestic market.

According to the company's chairman, Liu Heping, Hongyan has saved over 3 million yuan in duties over the past two years. "This policy has allowed us to reduce production costs and also opened up new opportunities for entering Southeast Asian markets," he noted.

Along with domestic firms, foreign-invested enterprises are also expanding their presence. On the day the port's independent customs operations regime was introduced in the Yangpu Economic Zone, Siemens Energy (Hainan) Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Siemens Energy, a Fortune 500 company, was established. It became the company's first gas turbine assembly and service center in the country.

Lars Volker, CEO of Siemens Energy (Hainan) Co., Ltd., said strong government support allowed the project to move forward in a very short time, laying a solid foundation for future development.

To further facilitate such investment, local authorities have adopted a package of measures aimed at facilitating market entry. These include simplified documentation requirements, expanded verification methods, and one-stop registration services, noted Zhu Mengwen, who works at the Danzhou City Market Regulatory Authority, home to the Yangpu Economic Zone.

In addition to trade and investment, easier cross-border travel and duty-free policies also contributed to consumption growth. Official data show that in the first month of the new customs regime in Hainan, duty-free trade volume reached 4.86 billion yuan, an increase of 46.8 percent year-on-year.

Experts argue that the changes to the Hainan Free Trade Agreement reflect broader national efforts to expand institutional openness. The guidelines for China's 15th Five-Year Economic and Social Development Plan (2026-2030) call for further expansion of institutional openness, protection of the multilateral trading system, and promotion of expanded international economic flows.

"The Hainan Free Trade Zone not only demonstrates China's unwavering commitment to high-level opening-up, but also brings greater certainty and positive impetus to the global economy and international trade cooperation," Cui Weijie said.

Guan Jirong, a provincial official, noted that 2026 marked the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development in China and the commencement of the independent customs operation regime throughout the Hainan Free Trade Port.

He noted that this year will be a new starting point for the Hainan Free Trade Zone to accelerate its own development and become the leading gateway to China's opening up in the new era. -0-

Syria: New clashes and ISIS prison escapes threaten civilian safety

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: United Nations – United Nations –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

January 20, 2026 Peace and security

The UN continues to closely monitor developments in north-east Syria following clashes between government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) coalition, which reportedly resulted in the escape of dozens of ISIS fighters from detention centres.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN chief, said Tuesday at a briefing in New York that he is "watching with great concern" the ongoing violence.

The Secretary-General called on the parties to fully comply with international law and ensure the protection of civilians, emphasizing the need for reliable security in places of detention.

He also urged the parties to continue dialogue, act in good faith and work together to implement all agreements reached.

The situation of civilians

The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) expressed "concern at reports of renewed fighting between the Syrian army and the SDF, despite the ceasefire agreement of 18 January," OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.

Rolando Gomez, a representative of the UN Information Service in Geneva, described the overall situation as "alarming, especially given the damage to critical infrastructure." He expressed concern for families trapped in combat zones, as well as those forced to flee their homes in recent days.

Fragile transition period

Syria remains onan extremely fragile path of political transition after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024 and nearly 14 years of civil war.

The transitional government is regaining control over areas in the northeast of the country previously controlled by Kurdish forces. Fighting has been reported in the provinces of Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Hasakah.

Syria's permanent representative to the UN, Ibrahim Olabi, told reporters in New York that the government and the SDF had reached a "common understanding" on a number of issues concerning the future of Hasakah province.

According to him, the SDF has been given "four days to conduct internal consultations and prepare a detailed plan for practical mechanisms for integrating the region." Syrian troops, he noted, will not enter the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli and will remain on their outskirts until the plan is finalized.

Camps and prisons

Northeastern Syria is home to several prisons holding thousands of ISIS (Daesh) militants. This terrorist group previously controlled large swaths of Syria and Iraq, committing mass executions, rape, forced recruitment, and other serious crimes.

Tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, suspected of links to militants are being held in separate camps, including the infamous Al-Hol camp, where more than 30 thousand people live.

Ceasefire and new clashes

The ceasefire agreement of January 18 was reached after weeks of fierce fighting. It provides for the transfer of control over areas previously held by the SDF to the authorities and the integration of SDF forces into the national army.

However, the very next day after the ceasefire was announced, fighting resumed. According to media reports, approximately 120 ISIS militants escaped from a prison in the city of Ash-Shaddadi, although most were subsequently captured.

Shamdasani recalled that the OHCHR has repeatedly emphasized that any integration of armed forces, including SDF units, into Syrian state structures “must be carried out through a human rights-compliant vetting process to ensure that individuals involved in violations or abuses are not included in these structures.”

Humanitarian aid

Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations continue to provide assistance in the four affected provinces, including emergency medical and psychosocial services, as well as water and sanitation support, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

In the city of Deir ez-Zor, government services have been suspended and key transport routes have been temporarily closed, depriving civilians of access to healthcare and education. In Raqqa, damage to critical infrastructure has restricted movement between city districts and disrupted the main water supply.

According to OCHA, people continue to flee the cities of Raqqa and Tabqa, as well as the village of Tawrw, heading towards Hasakah and Qamishli. Hundreds of families remain trapped in Tabqa and are sheltering in public buildings.

An assessment of the population's needs is currently underway, while humanitarian organizations continue to call for sustainable and safe access to those affected.
