Sergei Sobyanin opened traffic on a section of Kommunarskoye Highway with an overpass across Alexandra Monakhova Street.

"We continue active road construction. This year, we will build approximately 100 kilometers of roads, 19 bridges, overpasses, flyovers, and 22 underpasses and overpasses. Furthermore, we have launched three major road concessions, which are also designed to improve traffic in Moscow. Today, we are launching a relatively small but important project—a bypass of the Kaluga Highway from the Solntsevo-Butovo-Varshavskoye Highway to the Moscow Ring Road. It will improve transportation services to the large Moscow district of Kommunarka, where over 150,000 people already live, and will reduce overall congestion on the Kaluga Highway," said the Moscow Mayor.

The new highway will reduce traffic congestion on Kaluga Highway, Alexandra Monakhova Street, and Projected Drive No. 812 from Bachurinskaya Street to Kommunarskoye Highway by approximately five percent.

"The Kommunarka and Novomoskovskaya metro stations will become more accessible, and bus route C999 will be rerouted to them. Travel time from the Moscow Ring Road to the Solntsevo-Butovo-Varshavskoye Shosse highway will be reduced threefold, from 30 to 10 minutes," Sergei Sobyanin wrote on his channel in

MAX messenger.

The new road will improve service on the popular C999 bus route, which connects local residents to metro stations, public services, and other important city amenities.

The first section of the future Kaluga Highway alternate, a three-kilometer straight line, opened in 2020. The new road provided a direct exit from Kommunarka to the Moscow Ring Road, bypassing Kaluga Highway. That same year, a 500-meter overpass was commissioned at the intersection of Projected Driveway No. 7051 and the Solntsevo-Butovo-Varshavskoe Highway.

"Kommunarka is one of the main centers of development in our city. For comfortable living, the new district needs

schools, kindergartens, metro stations and, of course, roads,” the Mayor of Moscow emphasized on his channel in MAX messenger.

In January 2026, construction of the second section (from Projected Driveway No. 812 to the Solntsevo-Butovo-Varshavskoe Shosse highway) was completed. This is two kilometers in a straight line with two traffic lanes in each direction.

In total, five kilometers of roads were built and reconstructed as part of this project, including the main route, the overpass across Alexandra Monakhova Street (482 meters), side roads, and adjacent streets. As part of the landscaping, 9.5 hectares of lawns were laid.

“We plan to extend the road to the highway by the end of 2028

Voskresenskoye – Karakashevo – Shcherbinka, as a result of which its length will almost double and will be about 10 kilometers,” Sergei Sobyanin noted on his channel in MAX messenger.

New roads in Moscow

Between 2011 and 2025, approximately 1,600 kilometers of roads were built, representing approximately 30 percent of the existing road network. 488 new tunnels, overpasses, and bridges were constructed, increasing the number of artificial transport structures by more than 70 percent. 364 off-street pedestrian crossings were also created.

Between 2026 and 2028, 283 kilometers of roads, 47 artificial structures, and 58 pedestrian crossings are planned for construction. Of these, 91.3 kilometers of roads, 19 artificial structures, and 22 pedestrian crossings are planned for construction in 2026.

The main input objects include:

— a section of Kommunarskoye Highway with an overpass across Alexandra Monakhova Street (opened in January 2026);

— section of the Solntsevo-Butovo-Varshavskoe Highway road from Polyany Street to Varshavskoe Highway;

— the southern section of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter along Kaspiyskaya Street from Kantemirovskaya Street to the Paveletsky direction of the Moscow Railway (MR);

— overpass along the main route of Entuziastov Highway at the intersection with Svobodny Prospekt and Bolshoy Kupavensky Proezd (first stage);

— reconstruction of Simonovskaya and Krutitskaya embankments;

– a bridge near Novozavodskaya street;

— an overpass at the intersection of the Oktyabrsky and Savelovsky directions of the Moscow Railway on the section from Bolshaya Akademicheskaya Street to Akademika Korolev Street.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — Shanghai's gross regional product (GRP) grew 5.4 percent year-on-year in 2025 to exceed 5.67 trillion yuan (about 814.1 billion U.S. dollars), the city's statistics bureau said Wednesday.

The main drivers of economic development in this financial hub in eastern China are industry and the service sector. Shanghai's primary, secondary, and tertiary value added totaled 9.94 billion yuan, 1.165 trillion yuan, and 4.496 trillion yuan, respectively, representing year-on-year growth of 2 percent, 3.5 percent, and 6 percent.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the city's industrial added value increased by 5 percent last year compared to the previous year. Among industrial sectors, production of railway, shipbuilding, aerospace, and other transportation equipment increased by 15.8 percent year-on-year. Electrical equipment and instrument production increased by 11.1 percent, and automobile manufacturing by 7.8 percent.

Remarkably, Shanghai has made significant progress in developing new productive capacities. In 2025, the output of Shanghai's three leading industries—integrated circuits, biomedicine, and artificial intelligence—grew by 9.6 percent year-on-year. In integrated circuits and artificial intelligence, growth was 15.1 percent and 13.6 percent, respectively.

Despite the backdrop of international trade tensions, Shanghai's foreign trade reached a record high, with total import and export volume reaching 4.51 trillion yuan, up 5.6 percent from a year earlier.

A particularly bright spot was the export of products from the "new three"—electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products: the total export value reached 160 billion yuan, an increase of 17.4 percent. In particular, the export value of electric vehicles increased by 13.8 percent.

Shanghai's GRP exceeded 5 trillion yuan for the first time in 2024, three years after it first surpassed 4 trillion yuan. In 2006, the city became the first in mainland China to surpass 1 trillion yuan in GRP. -0-

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — China will implement a series of initiatives and actions to further develop and strengthen emerging and future industries during the country's 15th Five-Year Economic and Social Development Plan (2026-2030), Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Zhang Yunming said on Wednesday.

As the deputy minister noted at a press conference, the country will intensify efforts to stimulate new growth factors in emerging sectors, accelerate the application of new production technologies and products in new scenarios, and create state demonstration bases for developing industries.

Regarding future industries, China will promote the implementation of guidelines for promoting innovative development of sectors, carry out numerous promising scientific and technological projects of strategic significance, and support local authorities in developing future industries in accordance with local conditions, Zhang Yunming noted, adding that the investment momentum of state-owned investment funds will be further enhanced.

According to him, during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), a group of emerging industries including new energy vehicles (NEV), photovoltaic industry, as well as low-altitude aircraft, shipbuilding equipment and oceanographic engineering projects, achieved rapid growth, further strengthening the reputation of "Made in China".

The Deputy Minister also noted the record production and sales volumes of NEV vehicles in China, the steady growth of the photovoltaic industry, the increase in the range and number of civil unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the progress achieved in both quantitative and qualitative terms in the shipbuilding industry in 2025.

Vladivostok, January 21 (Xinhua) — Only two Amur tiger attacks on humans occurred in Russia in 2025, out of a total of 22 such incidents since 2010. TASS reported this on Wednesday, citing the press service of the Amur Tiger Center.

In 2025, two cases were recorded in Primorsky Krai. This is significantly fewer than the number of attacks on people by brown and Himalayan bears, as well as dogs.

In total, from 2010 to 2024, 20 cases of Amur tiger attacks on humans were recorded, an average of 1.4 per year, resulting in 13 injuries and seven deaths. Of these, 18 attacks were provoked by humans (not always the victims), primarily due to the consequences of illegal tiger hunting. In two cases, the cause could not be determined because the predator was not removed from the wild, preventing its examination.

TOKYO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — The Nara District Court on Wednesday sentenced Tetsuya Yamagami, accused of assassinating former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022, to life in prison.

Prosecutors have demanded a life sentence for 45-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, calling the murder of Japan's former prime minister with a homemade firearm at a street election rally "an unprecedented crime in the country's post-war history."

Shinzo Abe was shot dead on July 8, 2022, while delivering a campaign speech on a street in Nara, western Japan, in support of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate in the House of Councillors (upper house) elections. Tetsuya Yamagami was arrested at the scene.

He confessed to the murder of Shinzo Abe during his trial in the Nara District Court, claiming he committed the crime out of hatred for the Unification Church, as his family had suffered financial ruin due to his mother's large donations to the religious group. He believed the Unification Church had close ties to Shinzo Abe and other Japanese politicians.

Tetsuya Yamagami's defense had called for a prison sentence of no more than 20 years, arguing that he was a victim of a religious group.

Following the arrest of Tetsuya Yamagami, the Japanese government launched an investigation into the Unification Church for extorting donations from its members, which led to the Tokyo District Court ordering the Church to be dissolved and stripped of its tax benefits as a religious organization.

In addition, there has been increased scrutiny of the organization's ties to LDP lawmakers, some of whom local media reported receiving support during election campaigns. –0–

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — The People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Southern Area Combat Command's (SAC) drone training flights near China's Dongsha Island are completely justified and legal, Peng Qing'en, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Peng Qing'en made this statement in response to a statement from Taiwan's Defense Ministry describing the actions of a drone from the mainland as "extremely provocative and irresponsible."

Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration ignores the facts and the legal principle that Taiwan is part of China, stubbornly adhering to the separatist stance of "Taiwan independence," Peng Ching-en said.

Moreover, they have repeatedly staged separatist provocations, turning the DPP administration into absolute “troublemakers,” he noted.

Gaza, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — Hamas on Tuesday called on the international community to take effective action to compel Israel to immediately and completely stop "ongoing violations" of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

This is stated in the political memorandum presented to the mediators (Egypt, Qatar and Turkey), as well as the guarantor parties and international organizations on the occasion of the 100th day of the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement of October 10, 2025.

In the document, Hamas reaffirmed its full commitment to the agreement reached and described it as a binding framework aimed at “ending the bloodshed and not serving as political cover for continuing aggression or reproducing genocidal policies.”

Since the ceasefire agreement took effect, 483 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including 169 children, 64 women, 191 male civilians, and 39 members of Palestinian groups, the memorandum states. According to Hamas, 96.3 percent of the killings occurred in areas designated as protected by the ceasefire.

The memorandum notes that Israel committed 1,298 violations of the agreement, including 428 shootings, 66 incursions of military equipment into ceasefire zones, and 604 air and artillery strikes on populated civilian areas.

Hamas also accused Israel of "strangling" Gaza's healthcare sector by blocking the delivery of vital medicines and reconstruction materials. It also noted that Israel is failing to ensure a consistent flow of humanitarian aid by manipulating the number of trucks entering the enclave.

Hamas called for the implementation of the first phase of the agreement and an immediate transition to the second, which includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Israel must be compelled to adhere to the agreed withdrawal lines and a neutral international mechanism for monitoring the ceasefire and the delivery of aid must be established on the ground, the memorandum emphasizes.

Hamas also demanded the daily dispatch of 600 trucks carrying humanitarian aid, including 50 carrying fuel, under international supervision, and the UN's unrestricted operation. The document also called for pressure on Israel to immediately open the Rafah crossing to the entry of medical supplies, housing construction materials, and equipment needed for reconstruction.

The movement demanded that Israel be forced to reveal the fate of all detainees, release women and children, and return the detained bodies.

The 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee created to temporarily govern post-war Gaza officially began its work in Cairo on Friday.

On Tuesday, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Israel is blocking the committee's entry into Gaza, leaving the technocrats uncertain when and how they will be able to begin carrying out their tasks on the ground. –0–
