UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Less than 17 percent of the $46 billion needed to meet global humanitarian needs in 2025 has been received so far, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said at a daily briefing on Thursday.

“More than half a year has passed, and the situation with funding for humanitarian activities remains deplorable,” said F. Haq, citing data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

According to him, the amount of funding received to date is 40 percent less than for the same period last year.

The funding shortfall is a stark reminder that millions of vulnerable people will go hungry without the assistance they urgently need, the UN official added.

He noted that in June, faced with the largest funding cuts in the history of the international humanitarian system, OCHA launched a global appeal to help 114 million people, focusing on the most urgent needs as part of the broader 2025 Global Humanitarian Overview. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — With the Central Asian region's urbanization accelerating, people's demand for convenient and low-carbon travel has increased significantly. In this regard, Chinese-made clean-energy vehicles have become one of the ideal choices for local consumers, the Zhongguo Guomen Shibao newspaper of the General Administration of Customs reported.

Segway Technology Co., Ltd., a personal mobility aids development and manufacturing company based in Changzhou City, East China's Jiangsu Province, is preparing to send a batch of ATVs worth a total of 740,000 yuan (approximately $103,700) to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

According to the results of the first half of 2025, the company's export volume of ATVs, electric scooters, electric bicycles and their spare parts to Central Asian countries reached 8.7 million yuan in value terms.

The company's products are currently sold in more than 100 countries and regions around the world. Company representative Li Mingju noted that the Central Asian region, where the Chinese side first put forward the Belt and Road Initiative, is an important support point in the globalization strategy of their enterprise.

Parked at Zhongtong Bus Holding Co., Ltd., a leading bus manufacturing company based in Liaocheng City, Shandong Province, east China, are a number of passenger buses with the sticker “FERGANA CITY BUS.” They will be delivered to Fergana City, Uzbekistan, via the Khorgos checkpoint in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China.

The company's foreign marketing director, Tang Xuexia, noted that this batch of gas-powered buses, manufactured to order for Uzbekistan, is equipped with engines independently developed by China. Thanks to low carbon emissions and powerful engines, these vehicles will not only help reduce operating costs, but will also transport passengers safely and comfortably, she noted.

It is worth noting that, under the support of Liaocheng Customs, the company has strengthened the development of buses that meet the greenhouse gas emission regulations of Central Asian countries. To this end, the company has introduced advanced combustion technologies into its engines, improved the intake and exhaust systems, and upgraded the exhaust gas cleaning device.

According to the data, in the first half of this year, the company exported 193 passenger buses to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries, with a total value of over 100 million yuan.

BEIRUT, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — Six people were killed and 10 others were wounded in two separate Israeli airstrikes in eastern Lebanon on Thursday, Lebanese officials said.

The Lebanese Health Ministry's Emergency Operations Center said in a press release that one Israeli airstrike on Masnaa Road killed five people and wounded 10 others. Another airstrike on the town of Kfardan (Baalbek region) killed another person.

Lebanon's cabinet approved the goals outlined in a U.S. proposal to disarm Hezbollah at a meeting on Thursday, the country's National News Agency reported.

"We agreed to end the armed presence in all areas, including the presence of Hezbollah, and to deploy the Lebanese army in the border areas," Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morkos said after the meeting.

A ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and France has been in effect between Hezbollah and Israel since November 27, 2024, ending the clashes that erupted after the war in the Gaza Strip began.

Despite the agreement, the Israeli army periodically carries out strikes in Lebanon, claiming that they are aimed at eliminating “threats” posed by Hezbollah. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — A total of 515 vehicles carrying wind power equipment destined for export mainly to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were inspected at the Horgos Port of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the first half of 2025, according to statistics, the Zhongguo Guomen Shibao newspaper under the General Administration of Customs reported.

These units will be used in a number of international cooperation energy projects, including a wind power plant in the city of Khromtau /Kazakhstan/.

Situated on the border between China and Kazakhstan, Khorgos checkpoint, thanks to its unique geographical location, serves as an important logistics channel for Chinese wind turbines to enter overseas markets.

To ensure unimpeded transportation of large-sized equipment, such as 80-meter wind turbine blades, customs services in both countries have opened special corridors.

According to a representative of a Xinjiang freight forwarding company, Central Asian countries with rich wind power resources are always a key market for his company. He said that this year, his company has exported wind power equipment in more than 200 vehicles, and the export volume has been steadily growing.

Also recently, Fengcheng Photovoltaic Technology Company, located in Dezhou City, Shandong Province /East China/, a batch of solar modules for the construction of a photovoltaic power plant is ready to be sent to Tajikistan, and it will be delivered to the destination in about 10 days. According to a representative of the company, in the first half of 2025, the company made a huge breakthrough in the Central Asian market, and currently orders are coming in one after another.

Central Asian countries have favorable conditions for the distribution of sunlight, so they still have great potential in the field of photovoltaic industry, he noted.

“Our monocrystalline solar modules are at the top of the segment in terms of technical characteristics and product performance, which is why we are confident in expanding this new and promising market for us,” he is convinced.

According to the data, in the first half of 2025, the volume of photovoltaic products inspected by the customs service in Dezhou for export to five Central Asian countries exceeded 20 million yuan (about 2.8 million US dollars) in value terms, an increase of 13.7 times year-on-year.

Growing exports of Chinese-made energy equipment to Central Asian countries reflects deepening cooperation between China and Central Asia in the field of renewable energy, which contributes to the green transformation in Central Asian countries. -0-

"In 2020, with the participation of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, we achieved the return of women to the profession of electric train drivers. Today, about 140 female drivers and their assistants operate trains on 3 metro lines. More than 20% of them work on the Nekrasovskaya line," said Deputy Moscow Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov.

The return of women to the driver profession has become an important step in ensuring equal opportunities and expanding professional horizons for women in the Moscow transport industry.

An intergovernmental agreement on trade in services and investment was signed in the Kremlin on the sidelines of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and United Arab Emirates President Mohammed Al Nahyan on August 7. The document was signed by Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov and by the Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi.

The agreement forms the legal basis for increasing trade and investment cooperation between Russia and the UAE, significantly reducing barriers and opening up new prospects for companies in both countries. Stable and transparent rules for doing business and investment activities are established.

The document complements the free trade agreement in goods between the EAEU and the UAE, signed in June 2025. Together, these agreements create a comprehensive and inclusive free trade area, providing businesses in both countries with additional preferences compared to the rules of the World Trade Organization.

The agreement provides new opportunities for Russian companies to enter the UAE market and expand their presence. Thus, Russian service providers and investors will be able to operate without restrictions in such sectors as computer services, research and development, technical testing, technical consulting, computer backup in air transport, repair of sea and aircraft, rail transport, management services, educational, legal services. In addition, Russian companies are guaranteed the opportunity to open subsidiary banks, medical institutions and news agencies with 100% Russian capital in specialized free zones of the UAE.

The agreement will also facilitate the implementation of mutually beneficial joint projects in priority sectors such as energy, industrial production, and infrastructure. The parties will establish a Russian-UAE Investment Council, whose tasks will include expanding investment cooperation between the two countries and eliminating barriers to such interaction.

"The agreement will give new impetus to positive and mutually beneficial cooperation with the UAE. It will contribute to the expansion of bilateral trade and economic cooperation in trade in services, diversification of trade flows, expansion and deepening of cooperation ties," noted Maxim Reshetnikov.

Let us recall that the UAE President is in Moscow on an official visit. The focus of the high-level talks is the state and prospects for further development of multifaceted Russian-Emirati cooperation.
