Beijing, September 17 (Xinhua) — China will join all countries in actively promoting the construction of an open global economy and opposing any form of protectionism, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday.
The Chinese diplomat made this statement at a regular departmental briefing, commenting on an article published in a recent issue of The Economist magazine, which stated that China's exports continue to grow this year, while its trading partners are becoming increasingly diversified. The article notes that China is currently strengthening its position in global supply chains, and countries around the world welcome Chinese goods, while trade and tariff wars have had little impact on China.
"In the face of a complex and constantly changing external environment, China's foreign trade has maintained stable growth, demonstrating increasing resilience and vitality," Lin Jian emphasized, adding that in the first eight months of this year, China's total merchandise trade volume in value terms grew by 3.5 percent year-on-year.
He noted that during the specified period, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union became China's two largest trading partners, and China's total foreign trade turnover with partner countries in the joint construction of the Belt and Road increased by 5.4 percent.
“Building walls and barriers will ultimately isolate the builders themselves, while open doors and paths can provide mutual benefit and a win-win situation,” Lin Jian pointed out.
According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, facts prove that tariff and trade wars are not able to undermine the long-accumulated comparative advantages of China's manufacturing industry or the global reputation of Chinese high-quality products, nor are they able to reverse the global trend of countries around the world supporting trade liberalization and facilitation.
