JAKARTA, October 5 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the school building collapse in Indonesia's East Java province has risen to 45, a regional rescue official said on Sunday.

According to Nanang Sigit, head of the East Java Search and Rescue Agency, all the victims were taken to Bhayangkara Regional Police Hospital for identification.

"Procedural actions will be carried out after the rubble is cleared," said East Java Police Chief Nanang Awianto.

Part of the multi-story building of the Al-Khozini Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo County collapsed on September 29 during unauthorized renovation work, trapping dozens of students under the rubble.

On October 2, rescuers deployed heavy equipment after signs of life ceased to be detected at the collapse site. Previously, they had primarily relied on manual methods to clear the rubble due to concerns that using heavy equipment could cause further collapse.

BUDAPEST, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto on Sunday criticized the European Union's proposed seven-year budget for 2028-2034, calling it a "Ukraine budget" and warning that European taxpayers' money would be spent on Ukraine instead of strengthening the European economy.

Speaking on public radio station Kossuth Radio, P. Szijjártó noted that EU leaders plan to allocate citizens' money for arming and equipping the Ukrainian army and supporting the Ukrainian state.

“The Hungarian government will not allow Hungarian citizens to pay an even higher price for the war in Ukraine,” he emphasized.

Criticizing the rise of a long-term, war-oriented mentality in Brussels and throughout Western Europe, the Hungarian Foreign Minister declared a "severe war psychosis" among European political leaders. He acknowledged that the European economy faces serious challenges and expressed the view that EU funds should be used to restore competitiveness, not to finance Ukraine.

P. Szijjártó added that Hungary will not support such measures.

In July, the European Commission proposed a €2 trillion (US$2.33 trillion) budget for 2028-2034, which is subject to approval by the European Parliament and the Council before being finalized. It includes €131 billion for defense and space, five times more than in the current budget plan.

Tbilisi, October 5 (Xinhua) — Destabilization efforts in Georgia were orchestrated by forces acting on behalf of foreign intelligence services, President Mikheil Kavelashvili stated at a briefing on Sunday.

M. Kavelashvili assessed the events of October 4 that unfolded near the presidential residence.

According to him, government agencies will take strict measures against calls for the violent overthrow of the government. "Forces organized by foreign intelligence services attempted to destabilize the domestic situation," Kavelashvili noted.

The President of Georgia stated that in recent days, society has witnessed acts of vandalism and provocative actions aimed at undermining public order. In particular, parts of the city's historically valuable infrastructure, popular among local residents and tourists, were destroyed.

M. Kavelashvili emphasized that such actions are unacceptable, and the wise Georgian people will not allow anyone to change the country's government by force. He expressed confidence in the resilience of state institutions and called on the competent authorities to respond strictly to any attempts at destabilization.

On October 4, municipal elections were held in Georgia, during which mass unrest erupted near the presidential residence in the capital, Tbilisi. According to the Ministry of Health, 21 Interior Ministry employees and six demonstrators were hospitalized as a result of the clashes. Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Darakhvelidze reported on Sunday that Interior Ministry officers had detained several protest leaders.

Cairo, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Sunday issued a joint statement welcoming steps by the Palestinian Hamas movement towards the Gaza ceasefire plan put forward by US President Donald Trump.

According to the document, the foreign ministers of these eight countries welcomed “the steps taken by Hamas regarding Trump’s proposal to end the war in Gaza, release all hostages, living and dead, and immediately begin negotiations on implementation mechanisms.”

They also praised Hamas's statement of "readiness to hand over the governance of the Gaza Strip to a transitional Palestinian administrative committee composed of independent technocrats" and stressed the need to immediately begin negotiations to agree on mechanisms for implementing the American proposal and to consider all its aspects.

The foreign ministers also welcomed Donald Trump's call for Israel to "immediately cease bombing and begin implementing the exchange agreement." They expressed gratitude to the American president for his commitment to establishing peace in the region.

The Foreign Ministers stated that this development of events represents “a real opportunity to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire and resolve the critical humanitarian situation facing the residents of the Gaza Strip.”

The diplomats reaffirmed their joint commitment to supporting efforts to implement the American proposal, end the war in Gaza, and achieve a “comprehensive agreement” that ensures unimpeded humanitarian access, prevents forced displacement of Palestinians, and protects civilians.

In addition, they called for the return of the Palestinian National Authority to the Gaza Strip, the unification of Gaza and the West Bank, the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the achievement of a just peace based on a two-state solution.

A day earlier, Egypt announced that it would host delegations from Israel and Hamas on September 6 to discuss the terms and details of an exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners as part of Donald Trump's ceasefire proposal.

According to an updated report from the Gaza Health Authority, since October 7, 2023, Israel's military campaign in the enclave, in addition to infrastructure destruction and starvation, has resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians and the injury of approximately 170,000 others. –0–
