Rio de Janeiro, October 18 (Xinhua) — At least 15 people were killed and several injured in a bus accident that occurred on the evening of October 17 in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, the country's Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported.

Preliminary investigations have shown that the incident occurred on the highway connecting the municipalities of Paranatama and Saloa in the Agreste region of Pernambuco state.

PRF officer Luciano Holanda said the vehicle, which was carrying more than 30 passengers, was a tourist bus with a valid licence.

The local fire service sent five rescue vehicles to the scene after receiving a call at around 8:00 pm local time / 11:00 pm GMT/.

According to the PRF, the bus veered into oncoming traffic and crashed into rocks at the side of the road. The driver attempted to steer it back onto the road, but the vehicle collided with a sand embankment and overturned.

According to media reports, there were two drivers on the bus who survived. The driver stated that the accident was caused by a brake malfunction, which caused the bus to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.

TEHRAN, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) — Iran's Foreign Ministry said Saturday that the country's nuclear program should be treated in the same way as any other non-nuclear state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) due to the expiration of a UN Security Council resolution limiting its nuclear power.

As the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement, UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), expired on Saturday, and all its provisions, including restrictions on Iran's peaceful nuclear program and related mechanisms, "should be considered terminated."

The agency's statement also stated that the primary objective of the UN Security Council's review of Iran's nuclear dossier was to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, a goal that has been fully achieved. Consequently, the statement clarified, the Iranian nuclear issue should be removed from the UN Security Council's non-proliferation agenda.

While calling Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA an important multilateral diplomatic achievement, Iran's Foreign Ministry criticized the United States for its irresponsible withdrawal from the agreement in 2018.

The statement emphasizes that attempts to restore the UN Security Council resolutions that have lost their force have no legal or logical basis and are undertaken only in obedience to the United States. –0–

Cairo, October 18 (Xinhua) — China's five-year plans have long played a vital role in addressing challenges and ensuring progress across all economic sectors, Amer Tamam, deputy editor-in-chief of Egypt's state-run newspaper Akhbar, recently stated in an interview with Xinhua.

2025 marks the final stage of the 14th Five-Year Plan, which has shifted the country's focus toward high-quality development, he said, noting that such policies have boosted the reputation of Chinese exports, especially electric vehicles.

According to our interviewee, China is committed to economic growth, technological innovation, environmental protection, and social security, and these efforts have improved the well-being of people in the country and benefited a number of other countries.

A. Tamam noted that despite global turbulence, China has consistently maintained annual economic growth rates of around 5 percent, demonstrating a commitment to strategic planning and resilience. As China accounts for approximately 30 percent of global economic growth, the country remains a cornerstone of stability in a world fraught with uncertainty, he added.

China has proposed and is developing the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and, most recently, the Global Governance Initiative, said A. Tamam. These initiatives are part of China's long-term plans to achieve comprehensive domestic development while simultaneously sharing the benefits with other countries, he asserted.

The agency's interlocutor believes that the Global Governance Initiative is crucial for strengthening the influence of developing countries. To support effective global governance, A. Tamam called for measures such as specific development projects, trade exchanges, infrastructure initiatives, and green economy initiatives that serve mutual interests.

According to him, countries participating in Belt and Road cooperation have already achieved tangible benefits in infrastructure, trade, and investment. Egypt is a shining example of mutually beneficial cooperation with China in projects related to the green economy, infrastructure, and construction, the expert emphasized.

A. Tamam described China's development over the past five years as "diversified, innovative, and open." He expects the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan to continue to prioritize areas such as technological innovation, artificial intelligence, the digital economy, and carbon emission reduction.
