Budapest, October 28 (Xinhua) — Hungary will not allow the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU), Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Monday.

Answering questions in parliament, the Foreign Minister stated that Ukraine's chance to become a symbol of peace in the EU had been missed, and Hungary would continue to veto the negotiations due to concerns about European security, the economy, and labor markets.

"As long as I remain foreign minister and Viktor Orbán remains prime minister, Ukraine's accession to the EU will not begin," he said, adding that Budapest is facing strong pressure from Brussels.

P. Szijjártó also criticized the EU's "war-oriented strategy," citing plans to provide large-scale financial aid to the Kyiv army and government. Hungary, he said, will oppose any attempts to use Hungarian taxpayers' money to finance the conflict.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy announced in Luxembourg that Hungary would maintain its national ban on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, accusing Brussels of putting Ukraine's interests above those of EU farmers.

I. Nagy warned that recent trade agreements between the EU and Ukraine, including high import quotas and zero tariffs on products such as honey, poultry and grain, threaten Europe's agricultural sector.

Hungary, Slovakia and Romania have sent a joint letter to the European Council asking for protective measures for farmers in border regions. –0–

La Paz, October 28 (Xinhua) — At least 16 people were killed and 36 others injured on Monday when a bus plunged into a ravine in Bolivia's Cochabamba department, local police chief Roger Costas said.

According to him, the bus skidded off a steep mountain road and fell into a 600-meter-deep ravine. The injured, including the 23-year-old driver, were taken to hospitals in the town of Quiliacollo.

The car crashed on a sharp turn, and the route it was traveling on is known for its narrow roads and poor visibility, said Bolivia's traffic police chief, Omar Segada.

Photos posted on social media show rescuers and local residents helping the injured and recovering the bodies of the dead. "The bus was completely destroyed, and many passengers were trapped in the mangled structure," said a Bolivian who provided assistance before rescuers arrived.

A preliminary investigation revealed the bus was overcrowded and speeding. The driver was detained. Authorities also stated that mechanical failure could have been the cause. –0–

Abidjan, October 28 (Xinhua) — Alassane Ouattara, the candidate of the Rally of Houphouettists for Democracy and Peace coalition, won the presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire with 89.77 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results released Monday by the country's Independent Electoral Commission.

According to the electoral commission, A. Ouattara received 3,759,030 votes out of 4,187,318 valid ballots, with voter turnout reaching 50.10 percent of the 8.7 million registered voters in Côte d'Ivoire and abroad.

Following the release of the primary results on Sunday evening, the candidate of the Democratic Congress party, Jean-Louis Billon, conceded his defeat and congratulated A. Ouattara on his victory.

According to the election commission and observation missions, the elections were held in a "generally calm and peaceful" atmosphere, despite some "minor and isolated incidents" in certain parts of the country. These incidents, which did not affect the integrity of the vote, included vandalism of election materials, obstruction of roads, and intimidation of officials.

83-year-old A. Ouattara previously served as governor of the Central Bank of West African States and deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

He served as Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire from 1990 to 1993 and won the 2010 presidential election, officially taking office in 2011. Ouattara has already been re-elected twice: in 2015 and 2020.

According to Ivorian law, the president is elected by direct popular vote for a five-year term. The final election results will be officially announced shortly by the Constitutional Council after verification. Any candidate has five days to file an appeal.
