OTTAWA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — The city of Burnaby in Canada has apologized to Chinese-Canadians for "historical discrimination" and repealed discriminatory bylaws that affected them.

“I stand before you on behalf of the City of Burnaby to acknowledge and apologize for our historical discrimination against people of Chinese descent,” Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley said Saturday. “Today, we shine a light on the historical injustices and systemic racism perpetuated by the Burnaby municipal government and elected officials from 1892 to 1947, and we commit to ensuring that this dark period in our city’s history never happens again.”

The mayor added that the city condemns discriminatory policies and actions against people of Chinese descent and seeks to recognize their contributions to the city's shared history.

Three major discriminatory bylaws passed by the city between 1892 and 1947 were officially repealed on Saturday.

City Councilman James Wang, who played a key role in the reconciliation process, said in an interview about the work done: "This apology is the result of years of collaboration between the city government and the Chinese community. During the reconciliation process, we uncovered numerous historical manifestations of discriminatory policies."

“Over the past two years, we have established an advisory group and held over a hundred public events to gather community input and ensure that this apology truly meets the needs of the families affected,” he added.

Since 2005, the Canadian federal government, the provincial government of British Columbia, and the City of Vancouver, among others, have apologized for past discrimination against Chinese Canadians. –0–

CHENGDU, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of ferret in a national nature reserve in southwest China's Sichuan Province and named it Mustela mopbie, according to the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The scientists reported their discovery this month in the international peer-reviewed journal Journal of Systematics and Evolution.

In July and August 2024, a joint expedition team including researchers from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, West China Normal University, and Sichuan University collected three ferret specimens during a small mammal biodiversity survey in the Dafengding National Nature Reserve, located in Mabianyi Autonomous County, Sichuan.

A comprehensive analysis of genomic and morphological data led researchers to confirm the discovery of a new species. Mustela mopbie, as the researchers named it, is small in size and capable of penetrating narrow crevices and caves to catch insects and small rodents, a characteristic of this species.

The discovery of Mustela mopbie provides important information about species diversity within this group, and opens up new perspectives on how small predators adapt to different habitats through genetic variation in complex environmental conditions, the researchers believe.

The researchers' work has once again confirmed the great value of the Hengduan Range region, especially the mountains surrounding the Sichuan Basin, for the conservation and research of biodiversity worldwide. -0-

HARBIN, November 17 (Xinhua) — Since the Tongjiang Railway Checkpoint (in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province) opened in 2022, it has handled a total of 273 China-Europe international freight trains, carrying over 14 million tonnes of export and import cargo, according to the Harbin branch of China Railways.

The Tongjiang railway checkpoint is a first-class national border crossing. Since its commissioning in November 2022, the travel distance from this checkpoint to markets in the interior of Europe has been reduced by 809 km compared to the Suifenhe railway checkpoint, saving approximately 10 hours, effectively reducing traffic congestion at the Manzhouli and Suifenhe checkpoints.

Currently, China-Europe freight train services operating through the Tongjiang Port of China cover 14 European countries and connect over 60 Chinese cities. They primarily transport cargo to Europe from the cities of Changsha, Shenyang, Harbin, Shanghai, and their surrounding areas. The range of goods transported has expanded from coal and iron ore concentrates to more than ten categories of goods, such as auto parts, aluminum ingots, and food products.

The project to reconstruct and expand the capacity of the Jiamusi-Tongjiang Railway is currently proceeding smoothly. Upon completion, the line's capacity is expected to triple, and the volume of imports and exports through the Tongjiang Port will increase by more than 40 percent.

A panel discussion, "Visioning Digital Twins: Strategic Issues and Global Trends," was held at the Europa Hotel as part of the "Integrated Digital Twins 2025" conference. The event served as a platform for dialogue between Gazprom Neft and SPbPU. Oleg Tretyak, Head of the Digital Transformation Department at Gazprom Neft, opened the discussion.

At the beginning of the conference, Gazprom Neft's Director of Science, Mars Khasanov, presented the company's strategic approach to artificial intelligence. He emphasized that the value of AI is determined by its ability to solve production problems with measurable economic impact—from accelerating field modeling to risk management.

Modern intelligent systems are based on the synergy of neural and symbolic approaches, creating the foundation for conceptual engineering—a key discipline in managing the lifecycle of complex systems. The future of digital transformation is defined by a combination of hybrid AI methods with a focus on solving applied problems. In his presentation, he described the company's methodology in detail. This hybrid strategy combines the power of machine learning with the precision of physical models and the logic of expert systems.

Yuri Fomin, SPbPU Vice-Rector for Research, spoke from an academic perspective. He noted that effective collaboration between science and industry requires finding a balance between different planning horizons: businesses aim for quick results, while the university operates within a longer research cycle, combining both fundamental and applied research.

"We understand the business need for operational solutions and are actively developing applied areas ourselves," the vice-rector noted. "However, some tasks require more in-depth scientific research, which doesn't always fit into annual planning cycles."

The key challenge, according to the vice-rector, remains access to data due to security requirements and its incompleteness.

In such cases, digital twins come to our rescue—they allow us to work with the client to develop solutions and demonstrate their effectiveness, added Yuri Fomin.

He also discussed the current 2025 results of the POLANIS platform. The "Automation of Seismic Data Processing Using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)" project, part of the Scientific and Technical Complex 3 (KNTN-3), is integrated into the universal POLANIS platform-ecosystem at SPbPU. The platform's development is being implemented within the framework of the "Priority 2030" program.

Alexander Paivin, Head of Asset Potential Management Methodology at Gazprom Neft, discussed the value of digital twins in the oil and gas industry and application examples. Dmitry Makeenko, Advisor to the Deputy Chairman of the Management Board at Gazprom Neft, discussed scalability: how to move from pilot projects to industrial applications.

Ilya Odnokolov, Head of the Prospective Development Program at Gazprom Neft, emphasized data as a foundation for determining the standards and approaches needed.

The conference was organized by the Industrial Innovations Association, intellectual partner Skoltech, general partner Gazprom Neft, and Peter the Great Polytechnic University.

Participants concluded that a strategic alliance between science and industry is necessary to create breakthrough technologies and ensure the technological sovereignty of the domestic fuel and energy sector.
