Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — China calls on Japan to clarify its so-called consistent position on the Taiwan issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Monday. She emphasized that if Japan merely vaguely reiterates its unchanging position while constantly crossing red lines in its actions, such repetition is nothing more than empty words that erode and undermine the one-China principle.

Mao Ning made the announcement at a daily press briefing. Earlier at the G20 summit, Japan dismissed China's claim that Japan had changed its position on the Taiwan issue as baseless, asserting that Japan had repeatedly explained to China the meaning of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks, as well as its consistent position.

China has repeatedly stated its position on Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks about Taiwan, Mao Ning noted, adding that the Japanese prime minister's words seriously contradict the spirit of the four Sino-Japanese political documents and fundamentally undermine the political foundation of Sino-Japanese relations.

According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the Chinese side has noted Japan's recent statements regarding its "unchanged position" on the Taiwan issue. "However, what exactly is Japan's so-called unchangeable position? Can Japan fully and publicly articulate this 'unchanged position'? If Japan merely repeats that its position has not changed, without clarifying the specific content of this position and, at the same time, continually crosses red lines in its actions, then such statements will remain empty words that blur and emasculate the one-China principle," the Chinese diplomat emphasized.

Recalling that the one-China principle is an unshakable universal consensus of the international community, Mao Ning pointed out that if the Japanese government's position on the Taiwan question has truly not changed, Japan must unambiguously adhere to the one-China principle and firmly abide by the spirit of the Four Sino-Japanese Political Documents and the commitments Japan has undertaken. Specifically, this refers to the provisions of the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement that "the Japanese government recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China" and "the government of the People's Republic of China reaffirms that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China. The Japanese government fully understands and respects this position of the Chinese government and firmly adheres to its position in accordance with Article 8 of the Potsdam Declaration." "Why can't Japan fully and accurately reaffirm this position?" Mao Ning asked.

The Chinese side calls on the Japanese side to take China's demands seriously, truly reconsider and correct its mistakes, translate its promises to China into real actions, not persist in delusions, and ensure that words match deeds, the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry concluded.

GUANGZHOU, November 24 (Xinhua) — A fatal accident in southern China's Guangdong Province was caused by poor safety procedures during tunnel construction in a high-risk area and a failure to reinforce the tunnel in a timely manner after the initial collapse, according to an investigation report released Monday.

On December 4, 2024, 13 workers were killed in a landslide at the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway construction site in Shenzhen.

An investigative team dispatched to the site by provincial authorities determined that during tunneling in a high-risk zone, the surrounding rock proved weaker than estimated during design and survey work. However, tunneling was not stopped, and the tunneling and support technologies were not replaced with more reliable ones, which ultimately led to a localized collapse of the roof above the face.

Following the occurrence of a hazardous situation, failure to take timely and effective engineering measures resulted in repeated collapses and a ground failure above the face, resulting in the death of workers on the surface.

This accident exposed problems related to poor management, weak risk control during construction, inadequate emergency response mechanisms and improper handling of the emergency on site.

The incident resulted in direct economic losses of approximately 72.6 million yuan (approximately 10 million US dollars). The tunnel construction companies have been advised to hold those responsible accountable in accordance with the law.

The growth of large corporations, uncontrolled technological development, and the climate crisis pose a serious threat to human rights, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said Monday at the 14th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights in Geneva.

He stressed that both states and private companies must "choose a different path" to protect people and the planet.

Artificial intelligence and social networks

Türk noted that modern digital platform business models are increasing polarization in society, and new technologies pose the risk of undermining fundamental freedoms.

"Without proper safeguards and regulation, AI systems could turn into a modern-day Frankenstein's monster," Turk said.

He warned that the use of generative AI "for political or economic purposes" could facilitate the manipulation of public opinion and undermine the rights to privacy, freedom of expression and work.

Climate Injustice and Corporate Responsibility

Speaking about the climate crisis, Türk criticized the role of the fossil fuel industry and the inconclusive results of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).

"The oil and gas industry reaps enormous profits while simultaneously destroying the world's poorest communities and countries. Those responsible for this injustice must be held accountable," the High Commissioner said.

He added that future generations may regard the current policy of inaction as a crime.

Persecution of human rights activists

Turk expressed concern about attacks on human rights defenders and the weakening of legal requirements for corporate responsibility in a number of countries.

"Attacks on human rights defenders who bravely try to expose business-related abuses are unacceptable," the UN's top human rights official stressed.

He also noted alarming attempts to roll back measures aimed at supporting diversity, equality and inclusion and combating structural discrimination.

Positive examples

Despite the negative trends, Türk emphasized that some companies can serve as role models for others: they are implementing risk management in line with international standards, switching to renewable energy, and creating mechanisms to respond to disruptions.

He particularly noted decisions by international and national courts that affirm the obligation of businesses to respect human rights, as well as their responsibility for environmental damage and labor abuses.

"The courts have made it clear that corporations have a duty to respect human rights," Türk emphasized.

Business Support Service

The High Commissioner announced the launch of a Business Helpdesk within the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), which he heads. The new body will provide guidance to States, companies, and civil society on UN Principles on Business and Human Rights.

In conclusion, Türk spoke of the need to create a global coalition that would unite representatives from various sectors at the interregional level. He emphasized that human rights are "about and for everyone."

Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — China will begin building national demonstration bases for developing emerging industries, with plans to establish approximately 100 industrial park-type demonstration bases and 1,000 enterprise-type demonstration bases by 2035. This was announced in a circular published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

According to the document, the creation of such bases will be aligned with national development strategies for the period up to 2035 and the 15th Five-Year Development Plan (2026-2030). The focus will be on key emerging sectors such as next-generation information technology, new energy sources, new materials, biology, high-tech equipment, intelligently connected vehicles powered by new energy sources, green industries and environmental protection, low-altitude equipment, aviation, and astronautics.

Demonstration bases in the form of industrial parks will facilitate cluster-based, large-scale, and high-tech development of leading industries, enhance capabilities for providing key universal technologies, raise the level of transformation and industrial application of scientific and technological achievements, and enable the search for management methods suitable for emerging industries.

According to the ministry, enterprise-type demonstration bases will focus on strengthening product development, addressing challenges related to key and core technologies, and achieving breakthroughs in important innovative technologies. They will also develop new forms and models of business activity and facilitate the renewal of application scenarios.
