Beijing, December 4 (Xinhua) — Flight CZ6001 departed Tianshan International Airport in Urumqi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bound for Moscow on Tuesday. The 135 Chinese on board became the first group of passengers to travel from Urumqi to Moscow since Russia recently introduced a visa-free regime for Chinese citizens, Urumqi Radio and Television reported.

According to Chinese passenger Gao Yunfeng, who frequently travels between China and Russia, the visa-free policy offers significant convenience for tourists, businessmen, and anyone wishing to visit Russia. A direct flight from Urumqi to Moscow takes approximately six hours, saving nearly three hours compared to a flight from Beijing to the Russian capital.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree allowing Chinese citizens to travel to Russia visa-free for stays of up to 30 days until September 14, 2026. The decree comes into effect on the day it is signed—December 1.

Currently, Chinese air carriers China Southern Airlines and Air China operate three passenger flights a week at this airport, respectively, on two direct air routes between Urumqi and Moscow, reported Xinjiang Airport Group Co., Ltd.

According to the Urumqi Border Control Service, this year, the tourist flow between China and Russia through the Tianshan Airport checkpoint amounted to 59,000 people, which is 292 percent more than last year, of which more than 43,000 trips were made by Chinese passengers.

Earlier this year, China introduced a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens from September 15, 2025, to September 14, 2026. Russian citizens holding ordinary passports can visit China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchanging visits, and transit purposes, provided their stay in China does not exceed 30 days.

An official from the aforementioned agency also reported that since China introduced visa-free travel for Russians on September 15, tourist traffic between the two countries through Urumqi Airport has exceeded 21,000, representing a 224.5 percent increase over the same period last year. Russia's implementation of the visa-free policy will further facilitate human exchanges between the two countries, which will contribute to deeper cooperation in tourism, commerce, education, culture, and other areas, he noted.

URUMQI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) — In the first 10 months of this year, exports of seedlings and flowers from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) reached 36,000 tons, worth 697 million yuan, up 406.1 percent and 464.2 percent year-on-year, respectively, according to the customs office of Urumqi, the capital of the region.

As Zhou Tingjun, a representative of a seed company in Xinjiang, noted, this year the company completed the relevant registration procedure to obtain export rights and has now reached an agreement with a client on plans to export a batch of seeds to Tajikistan.

Since the beginning of this year, seedlings and flowers have become a new growth point for Xinjiang's special agricultural exports. Urumqi Customs views fieldwork and processing as key quality control elements, implementing standardized oversight of the entire production process at enterprises, from cultivation to processing, and closely monitoring quarantine facilities, which are a focus both domestically and internationally.

"Based on the needs of enterprises and the expansion of varietal diversity, we explain to companies in advance the technical trade barriers and quarantine requirements of importing countries to ensure that the exported seedlings and flowers meet international standards and create a strong brand," said Liu Xiong, a customs official at Urumqi.

Currently, there are a total of 46 enterprises in Xinjiang that are engaged in growing seedlings and flowers and have the right to export. -0-

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) — Lipstick, hand cream, thermal socks… At a shopping mall on Wangfujing Road in Beijing, a Russian tourist named Alborov and his friend happily carry bags full of groceries.

“This is my first time visiting China and I am very fascinated by its rich culture,” Alborov said, adding that Beijing is a city that combines tradition and modernity.

As a reminder, China introduced a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding regular passports from September 15, 2025, to September 14, 2026. Alborov is one of the Russian tourists who arrived in China under this visa-free policy.

According to previously published data from the border control service of Beijing Daxing International Airport, since the entry into force of the visa-free entry regime introduced by China for Russian citizens, as of the evening of November 9, more than 63,000 Russian tourists have entered China through the airport checkpoint, which is almost 80 percent more than during the same period last year.

In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on December 1, according to which, based on the principle of reciprocity, Chinese citizens will be able to enter the Russian Federation visa-free for tourism and business trips of up to 30 days until September 14, 2026.

Analysts believe that the mutual visa exemption regime for Chinese and Russian citizens will facilitate tourist travel in both directions between the two countries.

According to Han Jie, Chairman of the Board of the Chinese tourism company CYTS Aoyou Technology Development Co., Ltd., many Chinese tourists have already contacted the company for information about tourism products related to trips to Russia, including traditionally popular routes to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

In addition, Daxing International Airport continues to improve its services for inbound and outbound passengers and expands the air service network between China and Russia, providing Chinese tourists with a rich choice for traveling to Russia.

According to the data, currently, 8 Chinese and Russian airlines operate 59 round-trip flights every week between Daxing Airport and Russian cities such as Moscow, Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Khabarovsk, and Krasnoyarsk.

Daxing Airport administration expects that the visa-free regime introduced by Russia for Chinese citizens will further increase the number of Chinese tourists visiting Russia. The airport will implement a number of measures to facilitate human exchanges and trade and economic ties between the two countries.

To serve Russian tourists visiting China, Daxing Airport regularly and continuously publishes information on air routes to and from Russia, Russian-language services to facilitate entry, and other convenient measures, including Wi-Fi access at the airport, through three international social media platforms.

Meanwhile, Daxing Airport displays and publishes information in Russian in several technological areas, including check-in, transfer areas, and waiting areas in the terminal building. Flight information screens and boarding announcements are also available in Russian. Information desks are also equipped with translation devices and third-party communication services to provide timely and accurate service information to Russian passengers.

Russian passengers can currently use services such as withdrawing Chinese yuan from ATMs, exchanging foreign currency, applying for SIM cards, booking travel, purchasing tickets, and applying for temporary driver's licenses for foreigners in certain areas of the airport. -0-

BEIJING, December 4 (Xinhua) — China's anthropogenic carbon emissions will increase by 0.6 percent in 2024, significantly lower than the previous year's growth rate and the global average, the China Meteorological Administration reported on Wednesday, indicating that efforts to meet the country's climate commitments are gaining momentum.

These data were published in the China Greenhouse Gas Bulletin 2024, released by the China Meteorological Administration. Domestic growth of 0.6 percent compares favorably with the global average growth rate of 0.8 percent for the same period.

Zeng Qin, an official with the China Meteorological Administration, said the data showed that China's proactive implementation of emissions reduction commitments was achieving practical results.

According to the bulletin, the average carbon dioxide concentration at the Waliguan Observatory for global atmospheric observation reached 424.9 parts per million (ppm) in 2024. The Waliguan Observatory, part of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) network, is located in Qinghai Province, northwest China.

This represents a year-on-year increase of 3.5 ppm, in line with the global average increase.

Meanwhile, several regional background atmospheric stations, including Shandianzi, Longfengshan and Shangri-La, recorded annual increases in CO2 concentrations below the global average, the department said.

The Chinese report came shortly after the WMO's October global bulletin warned that concentrations of three major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—would continue to rise in 2024. The WMO noted a global average CO2 concentration of 423.9 ppm, the largest annual increase since modern records began in 1957.

The record global jump is primarily due to continued emissions from fossil fuels, the weakening of natural carbon sinks on land and in the ocean due to extreme heat, and increased emissions from global wildfires.

This is the 14th consecutive year that China has published greenhouse gas monitoring data. The agency reported that it has established a national observation network, including one global background observatory, 18 regional baseline stations, and over 120 observation points.

Looking ahead, the Office has committed to continuing to optimize its monitoring network and strengthen high-precision analysis to provide technology support for the country's response to climate change. -0-
