Beijing, March 13 (Xinhua) — Problems in Afghan-Pakistani relations can only be resolved through dialogue and consultation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.
The use of force will only complicate the situation and exacerbate contradictions, which will not benefit either side and will create a threat to regional peace and stability, he noted.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the relevant statements during a telephone conversation with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The conversation took place at the initiative of the Afghan side.
A.H. Muttaqi thanked China for its active mediation efforts in resolving the conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan, noting that the Afghan people, who have suffered greatly from the war, value opportunities for peace and development.
Afghanistan's foreign minister said his country wants to be a source of peace in the region, not instability, and reiterated that Afghan territory will not be used to attack neighboring countries.
As A. H. Muttaqi pointed out, Afghanistan does not wish to enter into military conflict with other countries and seeks mutual trust and friendly coexistence with neighboring states.
The Afghan side is convinced that dialogue and consultation are the only way to resolve problems, and expects China, as a major power and friendly neighbor, to play a more significant role, the Afghan Foreign Minister noted.
Wang Yi, for his part, drew attention to the fact that, in the context of growing instability in the external environment, countries in the region must further strengthen cohesion and cooperation, jointly overcome current difficulties, and pave the way for security based on cooperation and common security.
As the Chinese diplomat emphasized, Afghanistan and Pakistan are inseparable brothers and neighbors who cannot be separated from each other.
Wang Yi also recalled that China has consistently maintained an objective and impartial position on the conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Currently, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's special envoy for Afghan affairs is visiting the two countries for the purpose of mediation, Wang Yi said, expressing hope that both sides will maintain calm and exercise restraint, hold face-to-face talks in the near future, achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, and resolve differences and contradictions through dialogue.
Wang Yi stated China's readiness to continue active efforts to promote reconciliation and ease tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The parties also exchanged views on the situation in Iran.
Wang Yi reiterated the country's principled position, saying China expects to work with the international community, including Afghanistan, to continue to play a constructive role in achieving peace.
