MINSK, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — A journey through time and memory began in the capital of Belarus on the evening of July 31. A photo exhibition titled "Shoulder to Shoulder – Towards a Common Victory" opened in Minsk, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.

The event was organized by the Minsk office of the Xinhua News Agency and China Image Group with the support of the Chinese Embassy in Belarus.

Hundreds of guests gathered together, carefully passing between the stands and stopping at 34 historical photographs. These pictures vividly reflect the heroic path of the Chinese people in the fight against the Japanese aggressors, captured the touching feats of Soviet volunteer pilots who came to the aid of China, and demonstrated the deep friendship that developed between the peoples of China and Belarus in the fire of war.

First Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Lukashevich, having viewed the exhibition, told a Xinhua correspondent that the exhibition is very meaningful and historically accurate. It truthfully recreates the events of the bloody war of resistance of the Chinese people and evokes a deep response among Belarusians.

"These photo documents, which are presented at the exhibition, confirm the truth of the past events. It is very important now to talk about the true side of this history. We do not incite hatred, but we respectfully honor the common memory. The photographs remind us that Belarus and China take a united position in protecting the historical truth," S. Lukashevich noted and added that it is necessary to convey to the younger generation that the historical truth is a very important element for the peoples of Belarus and China. Without knowing history, it is easy to become a victim of deception.

Deputy Chairperson of the Belarus-China Friendship Society Alina Grishkevich did not hide her excitement while viewing the exhibition. “The black and white photographs show the suffering of the Chinese people during the war – the pain that Belarusians know well.”

A. Grishkevich noted that this year, when the two countries are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War together, the feeling of empathy is especially strong. “During the Great Patriotic War, my relatives were brutally killed, and their homes were destroyed. And at that time, friends in distant China were fighting for the independence and liberation of their homeland.” According to her, the pain of war knows no bounds: “I hope that Belarus and China will always move forward together under a peaceful sky.”

Standing in front of a photograph of a battlefield in northeast China, Sergei Vergeichik, an analyst at the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies, said he visited many memorials to the resistance war while studying in China, including the Nanjing Massacre Memorial. “These photographs bring back those memories again.”

“China contributed to the victory over fascism and suffered enormous losses,” said S. Vergeichik, adding that the unity and spiritual strength of the Chinese people demonstrated in those years evoke deep respect.

"Belarus and China have a common history of fighting shoulder to shoulder," noted the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus for ideological work, Pyotr Petrovsky. He noted that Mao Zedong's eldest son, Mao Anying, participated in the Great Patriotic War of the USSR as a political instructor of a tank company of the 1st Belorussian Front. "This is our common pride and incentive for future unity."

Student Polina Zudova said she was most moved by a photograph of Chinese and Soviet veterans embracing. “This is true brotherly friendship,” she said, adding that the exhibition helped her better understand history and appreciate the current relations between the two countries even more.

“Belarusians and Chinese have a lot in common: common values, a common view of the world order,” says P. Zudova. In her opinion, today, when some countries are trying to distort history, it is especially important for the youth of Belarus and China to preserve and pass on the truth about the past together.

Many guests took memorable photos near the poster with the inscription “Fighting shoulder to shoulder, marching forward hand in hand.” Behind them are echoes of history, in their eyes is hope for the future.

"The all-weather and comprehensive strategic partnership between Belarus and China is today based on a common historical memory. Since our ancestors shed blood together, our duty is to defend truth and peace together," noted S. Vergeichik.

"Remembering history, we will be able to firmly defend the post-war world order. When today some countries are trying to impose their own hegemony and superiority on the rest of the world, we – Belarus and China, together, as 80 years ago, stand as a united front in a joint struggle for a multipolar, fair world order," P. Petrovsky summed up. -0-

New Trend Among Chinese Students: Online Shopping Through Streaming Platforms

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Beijing university student Fang Rui recently bought several summer outfits during live broadcasts on China's popular streaming platforms Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) and Xiaohongshu. She was very pleased with the clothes after trying them on.

Fang Rui said that in the summer she prefers to buy clothes online rather than go shopping in the heat. Watching live streams is convenient – the hosts show clothes, talk about styles in detail, and the prices are usually lower than in regular stores. If she can find a streamer with a similar figure and style, it will be even easier for her to choose the right clothes.

In recent years, with the rapid development of Internet technology, online shopping through live streaming platforms has become a new fashionable form of consumption. With advantages such as ease of use, high interactivity, favorable prices and a wide range of products, this format is rapidly conquering the market.

According to the White Paper on the Development of Streaming Platform E-Commerce in 2025, published by the Research Center of the State Administration for Market Regulation of the People's Republic of China, the market size of streaming platforms in China increased by 10.5 times from 2019 to 2023. By the end of 2024, the total sales volume of this business form exceeded 4.5 trillion yuan (about 629.4 billion US dollars), accounting for almost a third of the total online sales and accounting for 80 percent of the growth of e-commerce. At the same time, the number of users in this flourishing industry reached about 600 million.

Against this backdrop, the vast army of streaming platform consumers is rapidly being replenished by university students. As industry analysts point out, students spend a lot of time online, which leads to them being more exposed to an emerging form of consumption such as online shopping via live streaming platforms. There is a tendency for students to be one of the largest and most active consumer groups in streaming commerce.

According to the recently released 2024 China Student Consumer Behavior Survey Report, the number of students in China continues to grow, with the total number of students in higher education reaching 47.63 million in 2023. At the same time, 41.1% of students earn part-time income of 1,500-2,000 yuan on average. The total annual consumption of students is expected to exceed 850 billion in 2024, demonstrating their significant consumption potential.

So what is the appeal of streaming trading for students? Analysts have given several answers.

They believe that high interactivity is one of the key features of online shopping via live streaming. In terms of instant interaction and visibility, this format significantly surpasses traditional e-commerce models. During the broadcast, the presenters communicate with viewers in real time, which makes the shopping process more interesting and targeted, and also allows to meet the personalized needs of students.

At the same time, analysts point out that interactive actions by users such as liking, leaving a comment, asking a question, joining a fan group to receive discount coupons, as well as actions by presenters such as instant responses, demonstrating and presenting products, issuing discount coupons, contribute to increasing engagement and stimulating consumer interest in student groups.

Moreover, live online broadcasts to promote products are often conducted with the participation of popular celebrities and Internet bloggers among students. Under the influence of the “celebrity effect” or “group identity,” students consider such public presenters to be fashion symbols and examples of quality life, and they easily develop special trust and sympathy for the products they advertise, which ultimately significantly stimulates consumption on streaming platforms, analysts believe.

Meanwhile, it should be acknowledged that with the rapid development of online sales through live streaming, the industry occasionally faces problems such as false advertising, late delivery of goods, and complicated return procedures, which negatively affects the consumer experience. In response to these challenges, relevant departments are accelerating the development and implementation of relevant measures to strengthen supervision and regulate live streaming trade.

Recently, the Beijing Market Regulatory Authority held a meeting on the operation of key platform companies in the city and released a document called “Some Measures for Regulating Illegal Activities in Online Sales and Streaming Trade.” The document outlined 10 major measures, including requiring enterprises to conscientiously fulfill their responsibilities in managing streamers in accordance with established standards, strictly monitoring five types of violations, and implementing four updated supervision and service models.

These steps are aimed at further strengthening the orderliness of online trade, creating a safe and secure digital consumer environment, and implementing the Special Action Plan to Stimulate Consumption, the implementation of which is envisaged as a priority task to ensure the country's economic growth in 2025.

At the same time, authorities and industry analysts are calling on students, who constitute one of the key consumer groups, to form the right attitude towards consumption, develop the ability to critically evaluate advertising information, approach purchases wisely, based on real needs and avoiding impulsive spending. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Russia became the third largest trading partner of Qinghai Province (Northwest China) in the first half of 2025, behind only Hungary and Malaysia, official data show.

According to data released by the provincial Bureau of Commerce, trade turnover between Qinghai Province and Russia reached 260 million yuan during the reporting period.

Qinghai's total foreign trade turnover from January to June was 3.59 billion yuan, up 57.7 percent from a year earlier. In particular, the province's exports increased by 2.1 times. The province has become the leader in the country in terms of growth rates of foreign trade and exports.

The dynamic development of the province's foreign trade, according to experts, was due to the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries, specific locally produced agricultural products, as well as the expansion of the list of its trading partners.

In particular, since the beginning of this year, 91 countries and regions of the world have become trading partners of Qinghai Province.

The province has seen a significant increase in trade with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. Its exports and imports with these countries reached 2.96 billion yuan in January-June, up 78.7 percent year-on-year. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Chinese and Kyrgyz experts completed a survey project of ancient settlements in the Chu River basin in the third ten days of July, according to a statement released on the website of the Dunhuang Academy.

As part of the project, which lasted from July 16 to 25, employees of the Dunhuang Academy and the Ministry of Culture, Information and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan visited Ak-Beshim and 15 other medieval cultural monuments.

They systematized data on the geographical location of the named ruins, their historical form, construction technology and current state. Thanks to this, a database was created on a group of cultural monuments in the Chu River basin, which will allow for scientific support for subsequent archaeological research and planning of measures for their preservation.

The project, according to the Dunhuang Academy, not only strengthened mutual trust and cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan in the field of archaeological research and cultural heritage protection, but also laid the foundation for the establishment of a regional mechanism for the protection of cultural heritage.

Let us recall that in 2017, the Academy already signed a memorandum of cooperation with Kyrgyzstan and sent experts to the ancient settlement in the Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan to study the possibilities of its preservation.

This year, the China-Kyrgyzstan Joint Laboratory for the Protection of Cultural Heritage was founded, which opened on the basis of the Dunhuang Academy and the Ministry of Culture, Information and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan, respectively.

The Dunhuang Academy is a cultural relics conservation institution with a history of over 80 years. It manages the Mogao Grottoes, Maijishan and other UNESCO World Heritage sites. The academy's technology in preserving murals and rammed earth ruins is among the most advanced in the world. The similar types of cultural heritage and climate conditions of Dunhuang and Kyrgyzstan have laid the foundation for cooperation between the two sides. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Power and communications have been restored in all administrative villages in Beijing affected by recent rainstorms, and the search and rescue operation for missing people is underway, the Beijing Emergency Management Bureau said Saturday.

Several rounds of heavy rainfall hit Beijing between July 23 and 29, killing 44 people and leaving nine others missing, a press conference said Thursday.

By Saturday morning, the problem with water supply in the settlements affected by the flood had been resolved, the aforementioned department emphasized.

Heavy rainfalls hit mainly the northern mountainous areas of Beijing, where the infrastructure of 40 towns and 312 administrative villages was damaged. In total, more than 300,000 people were affected by the disaster, and more than 24,000 houses were damaged.

In Miyun and Huairou districts, which were hit hardest by the downpours, communications were restored in all 190 administrative villages.

The number of temporary accommodation sites in Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang, Haidian, Shijingshan, Mentougou, Fangshan, Changping and Daxing districts is being reduced as more residents return home after their homes have been assessed for safety.

As of Friday afternoon, 10,876 people were still in 155 temporary accommodation centres, down 90,000 people and 669 accommodation centres from their peaks. -0-

Taiwan's stock and currency markets fall due to US tariff hikes

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: People's Republic of China – State Council News

TAIPEI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Taiwan's financial markets were shaken on Friday after the U.S. administration announced it would impose a 20 percent tariff on imports from the island.

Trading on the Taiwan Stock Exchange opened with stock prices down from the previous trading day and closed down 108.14 points to 23,434.38 points. The New Taiwan dollar fell below the key 30-to-1 level against the US dollar.

The US tariff rate on Taiwan exceeds the 15 percent tariff the US has imposed on the island's regional rivals Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK), prompting criticism from Taiwan's business community.

Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had previously said it had held several rounds of formal consultations with the US side. However, the announced 20 percent tariff rate has left many in Taiwan clearly disappointed and concerned about its potential impact on exports and the economy as a whole.

Lin Bofeng, chairman of Taiwan's influential Third Wednesday business club, warned that a 20 percent U.S. tariff on Taiwanese goods, higher than the 15 percent tariff on imports from Japan and the ROK, would undoubtedly cause serious damage to Taiwan's global competitiveness. He called on the island's authorities to immediately adopt effective policies to stabilize the economy and to disclose all details of the agreements with the U.S. to determine whether they will include additional conditions.

Commenting on these concerns, Kuomintang Party Chairman Zhu Lilun called the US tariff a "major threat" to Taiwan's export industries.

"The lack of a strategic plan by the DPP authorities forces the island's businesses to act blindly, thereby undermining their trust and weakening Taiwan's competitive advantage," Zhu Lilun said.

In response, the DPP authorities said that since the two sides had not yet completed the final consultation meeting, the 20 percent tariff was still temporary and there was hope that it would be reduced before a future agreement was concluded.

Still, analysts remain skeptical. Xie Zhichuan, a commentator on current affairs in Taiwan, questioned who ultimately has the power to determine what a “temporary tariff” is. He warned that Taiwan could face undisclosed additional commitments, such as large-scale investment in the U.S., since the two sides have not yet issued a joint statement.

He said that unless more details are released, the situation in Taiwan's industry, especially for small businesses in central and southern Taiwan, will only get worse. -0-
