KYIV, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Ukraine has struck a Russian fuel and lubricants base and fighter jets, Ukrainian official sources said on Monday.

According to the data published in Telegram by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF), the day before, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Unmanned Systems Forces, in cooperation with other units of the Defense Forces, hit a fuel and refueling complex at Sochi Airport in the Krasnodar Territory in the southwest of the Russian Federation. As noted, Russian army aviation was also located on the airport's territory. As a result of the attack, a large fire broke out.

In addition, on Monday night, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) used unmanned aerial vehicles to strike the Russian military airfield of Saki in Crimea, as reported by the SBU press service. According to the Ukrainian side, four fighters were damaged during the attack, another aircraft was completely destroyed, and an aviation weapons depot was also hit.

Ukraine says the main goal of the special operations is to reduce the number and intensity of Russian air strikes. According to Ukrainian sources, on Monday night alone, the Russian army launched 162 combat drones and drone imitators, as well as one Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missile at Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Defense Forces reportedly managed to neutralize 161 drones in the northern, southern, eastern and central parts of the country, one drone hit its target, and debris was recorded falling in nine locations. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — China has provided assistance to a foreign container ship that caught fire in the South China Sea, saving the lives of 25 of its crew members, all foreign nationals, the Ministry of Transport said Monday.

The department said four containers on a large container ship registered in Liberia suddenly caught fire on July 28 while the vessel was about 190 nautical miles northwest of Yongshu Reef in China's Nansha Islands, threatening the safety of the crew and international shipping routes.

After receiving the relevant message from the Marine Search and Rescue Center of Hainan Province, the Nanhai Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China launched an emergency response and dispatched a rescue ship to the disaster area. The ship "Nanhaiju-116", which was on a routine patrol nearby, headed to the scene at full speed. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the rescue operation and the safety of the personnel, a B-72CS rescue helicopter was also deployed, transmitting real-time information about the fire.

The visible flames were extinguished by approximately 2:00 p.m. local time on July 30. By the evening of August 1, after repeated checks, rescuers confirmed that there were no signs of a secondary fire, ensuring the safety of the crew, vessel and cargo and preventing secondary disasters such as marine pollution.

The Chinese rescue vessel continues to remain close to the container ship to protect it and ensure the safety of its subsequent voyage.

The ministry stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the safety of international shipping routes in the South China Sea. As noted, the successful rescue operation not only tested China's ability to respond to emergencies in deep-sea and remote marine areas, but also demonstrated to the international community China's ability to protect the safety of people's lives and property at sea and ensure the smooth operation of international shipping routes through practical actions. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — A China Coast Guard (CCG) official said Monday it has displaced a Japanese fishing boat that illegally entered China's territorial waters near the Diaoyu Islands.

The BOC ships took necessary control measures in accordance with the law, issued warnings and forced the Japanese vessel to leave China's territorial waters after it illegally entered the above-mentioned waters between August 1 and 4, said Gan Yu, a spokesman for the department.

He stressed that Diaoyu and its adjacent islands are China's original territory and called on the Japanese side to immediately stop all illegal activities in these waters.

"The BOC will continue to regularly conduct law enforcement activities in China's territorial waters near the Diaoyu Islands to protect the country's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests," the official added. -0-

Moscow, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — There is no talk of nuclear escalation now, but rather an emotional perception of the situation, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing on Monday, commenting on the emotional statements made in recent days.

"We do not believe that we are talking about any escalation now. It is clear that very complex, very sensitive substances are being discussed, which, of course, are perceived by many in a very emotional way," D. Peskov said in response to a question about whether the Kremlin considers the latest statements by US President Donald Trump about his readiness for a nuclear war with Russia a reason for escalation.

"Russia is very attentive to the topic of nuclear non-proliferation. And, of course, we believe that everyone should be very, very careful with nuclear rhetoric," he emphasized.

“There can be no winner in a nuclear war,” he noted. “This is probably the main postulate from which we proceed.”

Touching upon the statement by US President D. Trump that he gave the order to redeploy two nuclear submarines to “appropriate areas” due to statements on social networks by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, D. Peskov noted that American nuclear submarines are on combat duty even without statements from politicians.

"In this case, it is obvious that American submarines are already on combat duty. This is an ongoing process," the Kremlin spokesman said. -0-

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that two nuclear submarines have arrived "where they are supposed to be," two days after he ordered their deployment.

“I have already made a statement, and the answer is: they are in the region… where they should be,” the American president said.

D. Trump said on his social network Truth Social on Friday that he ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines “in the appropriate regions” after his spat with Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council.

On July 28, Trump shortened the time given to Moscow to end the conflict with Ukraine to “10 or 12 days” from the original 50-day deadline, citing frustration with Moscow’s “unwillingness to compromise.”

Later that day, Medvedev said Trump was playing a “game of ultimatums” with Russia, calling his threat “a step toward war… with his own country.” –0–

VILNIUS, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas resigned from his post on Monday, triggering the automatic resignation of the entire cabinet.

G. Paluckas confirmed his decision at an emergency government meeting on Monday morning, the Baltic News Service reported.

“Having made the decision to resign from the post of Prime Minister, I announce the resignation of the nineteenth government of Lithuania,” G. Paluckas announced at the beginning of the meeting.

He added that he would formally submit his resignation to President Gitanas Nausėda later on Monday and expressed gratitude to his ministers for their cooperation.

According to Lithuanian law, the president must be informed of the prime minister's resignation on the same day. Nausėda is now expected to accept the resignation by signing a decree and instruct the outgoing government to temporarily act until a new cabinet is appointed. The president will also have to appoint an acting prime minister.

Within no more than 15 days, G. Nausėda will have to submit a candidate for prime minister to the Saeima (parliament). The Social Democratic Party, which has the largest faction in parliament, will also delegate a candidate. The Social Democrats plan to make a decision on the candidate at a meeting of the party presidium on Wednesday.

G. Paluckas announced his intention to resign as head of the country's government and chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania last Thursday.

G. Paluckas' resignation from the post of the head of government comes amid an investigation into his financial transactions and alleged improper involvement in business, connections with certain businessmen and failure to compensate for damages caused to the Vilnius municipality.

G. Paluckas, however, denied any wrongdoing and called the criticism a “coordinated attack” by political opponents. –0–

URUMQI, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Customs at Tianshan Airport in Urumqi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, handled more than 835,000 pieces of incoming and outgoing mail in the first half of 2025, up 354.5 percent year on year.

According to the customs office, over 824,000 postal parcels were sent overseas from Urumqi in the first six months, up 374.6 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the volume of postal parcels incoming from overseas to Urumqi reached 11,400 units (up 11.5 percent).

During the specified period of time, mainly essential goods and light industry products were sent abroad by mail from Urumqi; they mainly entered the Kazakhstan market.

The sharp increase in outgoing mail from Urumqi was made possible by the high demand in the Central Asian e-commerce market. In recent years, e-commerce in Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries has been rapidly developing, and their requirements for the speed and cost of parcel delivery have increased. At the same time, postal transportation has become the preferred choice due to its low cost and fast customs clearance. This has contributed to the rapid growth of outgoing mail from Urumqi. -0-
