Tbilisi, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Georgia has launched regular container block train service on the Poti-Tbilisi-Poti route, which will significantly enhance the role of rail transport in the country's logistics system and increase Georgia's attractiveness as a transit hub of the Middle Corridor, the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development said on Wednesday.

The block trains will operate four times a week. According to the schedule, they will depart from Poti at 21:30 and arrive in Tbilisi at 09:47 the following day. Regardless of the occupancy of the trains, the schedule will remain unchanged, which will allow shippers to plan logistics in advance.

According to Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Guram Guramishvili, the launch of block trains will significantly increase the logistical efficiency of the Poti port. “Containers will be delivered directly, without intermediate operations, which will reduce the overall transportation time and increase the punctuality of delivery of export-import cargo,” he emphasized.

G. Guramishvili also noted that Tbilisi is becoming increasingly important as a logistics center, from where cargo can be quickly delivered not only within Georgia, but also to neighboring Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The initiative is seen as part of efforts to develop the Middle Corridor /Trans-Caspian International Transport Route/ – an international route connecting Europe and Asia via the South Caucasus, the Caspian Sea and Central Asia. –0–

ALMATY, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — The Kazakh army has begun implementing the PSY-RISK recruit selection method aimed at early detection of suicidal tendencies, the press service of the Kazakh Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday.

As noted by the department, the innovation is intended to increase the psychological stability of personnel and prevent tragedies in the army.

"The method was developed by military psychologists of the Ministry of Defense and was successfully tested during the spring conscription of 2025. Based on its results, over 470 young people with signs of suicidal predisposition were promptly identified. All of them were released from service or sent for additional examination," the statement says.

PSY-RISK includes primary screening, in-depth psychological examination and, if necessary, a psychiatric examination.

The issues of implementing PSY-RISK were discussed at a meeting of the interdepartmental working group, which included representatives of the ministries of defense, internal affairs, health, science and higher education, as well as specialists from the National Security Committee, the State Security Service and other government agencies.

The PSY-RISK method will be gradually implemented in all regions of the country. “It is expected that the innovation will increase the efficiency of selection, reduce the number of emergency situations in the army and will become an important step in strengthening the mental health of young military personnel,” the defense department emphasized. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — China's National Development and Reform Commission on Wednesday said it has allocated 100 million yuan (about 14 million U.S. dollars) from the central government budget to support flood relief efforts in southern China's Guangdong Province.

The funds will be used to restore damaged roads, water supply systems, hospitals and other key infrastructure and public services in the affected areas to speed up the return to normal operations and daily life, the department said.

Incessant rainfall in recent days has caused severe flooding in Guangzhou, Dongguan, Huizhou and Shanwei cities in Guangdong Province, prompting the National Disaster Prevention and Relief Commission to issue a Level 4 emergency response for the region on Wednesday.

According to the Guangdong meteorological station, precipitation will ease by August 7 and 8, and cloudy weather with high temperatures will set in in most parts of the province. –0–

TOKYO, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Japan's population, which includes only Japanese citizens, continued to decline rapidly in 2024, falling by 908,574 to 120.65 million as of Jan. 1, 2025, according to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Japan's population has been declining for 16 consecutive years. The current decline is the largest since the government began keeping such statistics in 1968. Compared with the peak in 2009, the total population decline has exceeded 6.42 million people.

The main reason is natural population decline: the number of deaths /1,599,850 people/ significantly exceeded the number of births /687,689 people/, which led to a net decrease of 912,161 people.

At the same time, the foreign population increased by 11 percent and reached a record level of 3.68 million people, exceeding the 3.5 million mark for the first time.

Including foreign citizens, Japan's total population was 124.33 million, down 554,485 from the previous year.

Foreign nationals currently make up 2.96 percent of Japan's population, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous year.

The working-age population (15 to 64 years old) remained at 59.8 percent of the total. At the same time, the number of Japanese of working age decreased by more than 500,000 people, while the number of foreign nationals in this category increased by more than 321,000 people, which helped ensure demographic balance. –0–
