TEHRAN/Cairo, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel Atty on Wednesday stressed the need to stop Israeli "crimes" in the Gaza Strip and ensure immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave.

According to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, during the telephone conversation the two sides discussed the latest regional and international developments as well as bilateral ties.

They exchanged views on the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to Israel's siege of the coastal enclave, the statement said.

The ministers also discussed the Iranian nuclear issue following the Israeli-American attacks on the country and reviewed bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Egypt said it was continuing to airdrop humanitarian aid over the Gaza Strip, sending 12 warplanes over the past three days to deliver food and essential aid to Palestinians in areas difficult to reach by land, the Egyptian military said in a statement on Wednesday.

The military said the aim of the airdrop was to “alleviate the difficult living conditions and meet the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to support them in the current crisis.

Israel has been waging a full-scale war in Gaza since October 7, 2023, which has so far killed 61,158 Palestinians, injured another 151,442, and caused widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure, according to updated information released by Gaza health authorities on Wednesday. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — China on Wednesday unveiled an action plan for a new round of rural highway upgrading to improve rural transportation infrastructure and promote all-round rural revitalization.

The plan, published by the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Natural Resources, sets out ambitious goals to improve the technical standards of rural highways, close gaps in their maintenance and create an efficient rural road network to support agricultural modernisation.

The document includes specific targets such as building and upgrading 300,000 km of rural highways and repairing another 300,000 km of rural roads. The plan stipulates that more than 70 percent of rural highways should be maintained in “good condition,” while the public bus network should cover 55 percent of all villages.

The central government will provide funding for the initiative, and provincial-level authorities will coordinate the use of local resources for the construction, management, maintenance and operation of rural highways. Unregulated debt financing and the creation of new hidden debt by government agencies are strictly prohibited, and enhanced fiscal supervision will be introduced at all administrative levels, the plan says.

Innovative financing channels are encouraged, including legally supported participation of financial institutions and private companies in rural road development. It is also proposed to explore the possibility of strengthening medium- and long-term credit support, create more sustainable financing mechanisms and test differentiated lending models based on market principles. –0–

NEW DELHI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — The Indian side on Wednesday called the U.S. administration's additional 25 percent tariff on Indian imports "unfair, illegal and unreasonable" and said New Delhi will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.

The official representative of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, made such a sharp reaction to the actions of the American side. According to him, it is “extremely regrettable” that the US has decided to impose additional duties on India.

“The US has been attacking India’s oil imports from Russia in recent days. We have made our position clear on these issues, including the fact that our imports are market-driven and are carried out with the overall objective of ensuring energy security for India’s 1.4 billion people,” the diplomat said in an official statement.

"We reiterate that these duties are unfair, unjust and unreasonable. India will take all necessary actions to protect its national interests," Jaiswal said.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25 percent tariff on India, citing India's continued purchases of oil from Russia, bringing the overall tariff rate for Indian imports to 50 percent. The additional charges will be levied from August 27.

The initial 25 percent tariff on Indian goods imported into the United States was imposed in retaliation for India's tariff policies on American products. –0–

NEW YORK, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India in retaliation for purchases of Russian oil, the White House said in a statement.

The order will come into force 21 days after signing, bringing the total tariff rate on Indian goods to 50 percent, while another 25 percent duty will start to be levied from August 7.

On August 4, D. Trump threatened to “significantly” raise customs duties on products imported from India, citing the fact that the Indian side buys and resells oil from Russia.

In response to the US leader's threats, India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement calling the "attacks on India unwarranted and unwise" and saying the oil imports were meant to "ensure predictable and affordable energy prices" for Indian consumers. –0–

Almaty, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, at the plenary session of the 3rd UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, put forward an initiative to create a global program for the transition to hydrogen energy for the period 2030-2040, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Wednesday.

"We express our readiness to participate in the development of hydrogen energy. Clear joint plans and interaction algorithms are needed here. In this context, we put forward the initiative to create a Global Program for the Transition to Hydrogen Energy for the Period 2030-2040," S. Berdimuhamedov said in his speech.

The President of Turkmenistan proposed to begin discussing the modalities of developing this program within the UN in 2026.

S. Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the initiative is based on the need to link all economic activity with environmental standards. “The essence of our environmental policy is to “tune” the economic system in such a way that the production sector is not a rival of nature, but its ally and support,” the Turkmen leader noted.

In this regard, S. Berdimuhamedov also called on conference participants to pay attention to the proposal put forward by Turkmenistan to form a global framework program for the transition to a circular economy.

The 3rd UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, which is taking place in Turkmenistan's national tourist zone of Avaza from August 5 to 8, is attended by heads of state and government, high-ranking officials from more than 100 countries and about 50 international organizations, as well as representatives of more than 20 large companies. –0–
