NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — U.S. carrier United Airlines resumed operations late Wednesday, hours after a major computer system failure forced the company to suspend flights nationwide.

“The underlying technical issue has been resolved, and while we expect some delays to continue, our team is working to restore normal service,” the corporation said in a statement.

The company added that the problem was related to a system that stores information about each flight and then feeds it into other systems, including those that calculate weight and balance and track flight time.

United Airlines did not say in a statement what caused the outage.

The disruption, which began just after 6 p.m. ET, led to the grounding of flights at several major airports, including Chicago, Houston, Denver, Newark and San Francisco, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

As of 10:25 p.m. ET on Wednesday, 1,038 of the company's flights were delayed, or 34 percent of its total, FlightAware shows.

United Airlines is not the first U.S. carrier to suffer from technical problems. Delta Airlines has canceled hundreds of flights in the summer of 2024 due to a major glitch caused by a software update error. –0–

NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — A senior Naxalite commander was killed in a fierce gunfight with police in India's eastern Jharkhand state, local officials said Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening in Gumla district, located about 71 km southwest of the state capital Ranchi.

SHENZHEN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese drone giant DJI is entering the smart home cleaning market, unveiling its first line of robotic cleaners on Wednesday, expanding its technological expertise beyond flying devices.

The new product line, called DJI ROMO, combines dry and wet cleaning functions, using the company's proprietary environmental sensing and intelligent route planning technologies originally developed for drones.

ROMO is DJI's first strategic transformation from aerial intelligence to the home cleaning scenario, company spokeswoman Zhang Xiaonan said.

According to her, although the conditions of domestic spaces are different from the air environment, the basic principle remains the same – the use of intelligent navigation, sensory perception and precise control to serve people more efficiently and intelligently. BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese tech giant Huawei has announced the full open source code of its CANN (computing architecture for neural networks) software toolkit for its Ascend chips, to support users in independently unlocking the chips' deep potential and developing customized solutions.

CANN serves as a bridge between Ascend's high-level artificial intelligence (AI) training systems and chips, allowing its users to access computing power without having to deal with chip-level complexities.

The announcement was made at the Ascend computing industry summit held in Beijing on Tuesday, where representatives from leading AI enterprises, universities, research institutes and Huawei partners launched an open-source CANN ecosystem initiative to consolidate industry efforts, explore emerging AI capabilities and jointly build a thriving Ascend chip ecosystem.

Huawei's rotating chairman Xu Zhijun said computing power remains at the core of the company's AI strategy.

Almost every major company that makes high-performance cards to provide computing power has a similar architecture. However, unlike the closed-source CUDA ecosystem developed by American chipmaker Nvidia for almost two decades, Huawei's CANN has taken a completely different path by going open source.

Huawei told Xinhua that after seven years of development, CANN has made key breakthroughs in computing optimization, communication efficiency, and memory management. It is now able to provide computing power support throughout the entire process of training and deploying AI models.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang on Wednesday stressed the need to protect the right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy while achieving the goal of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

All countries have a legitimate right to benefit from scientific and technological progress, a Chinese diplomat said at a UN Security Council meeting on non-proliferation of WMD.

According to him, in striving to achieve non-proliferation goals, the international community must commit to lifting restrictions on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes by developing countries and to developing international cooperation in this area.

“Non-proliferation is a global security governance issue that requires global solutions based on multilateralism and broad international participation,” Geng Shuang said.

"The international community should adhere to a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable concept of security, create favorable conditions for regional and international security, take into account the legitimate security interests of all countries, eliminate the main factors of proliferation and ensure common security," said China's deputy permanent representative to the UN.

China firmly opposes the proliferation of WMD and attaches great importance to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 on the non-proliferation of WMD, Geng Shuang emphasized. According to him, China strictly fulfills its international obligations and actively develops international cooperation in this area.
