CAIRO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The ministerial committee mandated by the extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic summit on Gaza, along with 23 countries, the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, on Saturday jointly expressed "strong condemnation and categorical rejection" of Israel's intention to establish full military control over Gaza.

A joint statement issued by the foreign ministries of countries including Egypt, Palestine, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Mauritania, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Chad, Djibouti, Somalia, Turkey and Gambia described Israel's intention as "a dangerous and unacceptable escalation, a flagrant violation of international law and an attempt to consolidate an illegal occupation and impose by force a fait accompli on the ground, contrary to international legitimacy."

It also notes that such measures “prevent any possibility of achieving peace, undermine regional and international efforts to de-escalate and peacefully resolve the conflict, and exacerbate serious violations of the rights of the Palestinian people.”

The countries and blocs demanded “an immediate and complete end to Israeli aggression” in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as “unconditional access” for humanitarian aid to Gaza and freedom of action for humanitarian organizations.

They also expressed support for the mediation efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the United States “to achieve a ceasefire and an agreement on the exchange of prisoners and hostages.”

At the same time, at a meeting in Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also “reaffirmed their rejection of the military reoccupation of the Gaza Strip” and called for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave, the Egyptian presidential office said in a statement.

Also on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said six countries parachuted 106 containers of humanitarian aid across the Gaza Strip.

Greece and Italy took part in the air operation for the first time, cooperating with the UAE, Jordan, Germany and the Netherlands.

Since the international airdrop operation resumed in late July, 11 countries have taken part and have so far delivered more than 1,100 aid packages to Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces said it was continuing a series of actions to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and would work with the international community to increase aid, while rejecting accusations that it was deliberately causing starvation there.

But U.N. officials and experts say airdrops will have little impact on easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza unless Israel opens land crossings to allow more aid and medical care for those suffering from malnutrition.

Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Gaza on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack on southern Israel that, according to Israeli authorities, killed about 1,200 people and took hostages.

Gaza health authorities said on Saturday that at least 61,369 Palestinians have been killed and 152,850 injured since October 2023. –0–

Aden, Yemen, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Yemeni government forces repelled a large-scale offensive by the Houthi group in Yemen's southern Dhale province on Saturday and killed three Houthi militants in a clash, a military official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The Houthis used heavy artillery in an attempt to break through government lines in the Bab Galak area in northern Dali province, he said, triggering intense fighting between the group and government forces.

The fighting lasted for about an hour. In addition to the three deaths, the group also suffered losses in military equipment, the source said, adding that five government soldiers were wounded in the fighting.

The Houthi group has not yet responded to reports of the clash.

Yemen has been in a fragile calm since a UN-brokered ceasefire collapsed in late 2022, with both sides unable to agree on extending or expanding it.

The conflict, which began in late 2014, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and pushed millions more to the brink of starvation, according to UN estimates. –0–

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The number of new cases of chikungunya fever in Foshan City in south China's Guangdong Province continues to decline thanks to a series of targeted preventive measures, municipal authorities said Saturday.

The city has recorded fewer than 200 new cases daily over the past five days, indicating successful early containment, Vice Mayor Wen Xi said at a press conference.

To date, no serious cases or deaths have been reported, and more than 90 percent of all those infected have recovered, Wen Xi noted.

Recently, efforts have focused on treating patients, controlling mosquitoes, and cleaning up the environment. Specific measures include targeted removal of mosquito breeding sites, draining stagnant water, and killing adult mosquitoes. Disinfection work has been carried out in villages and areas where a large number of cases have been reported.

Despite the progress, authorities warn that challenges remain. Heavy rains during the annual flood season, coupled with typhoons, could increase mosquito activity and the risk of virus transmission.

"We will continue to carry out public health campaigns, eliminate breeding sites and take strong mosquito control measures to consolidate the results achieved so far," Wen Xi said.

Chikungunya fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the chikungunya virus, which manifests itself with clinical symptoms such as fever, rash and joint pain. The virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — In a brightly lit laboratory in Beijing's Zhongguancun science and technology district, also known as "China's Silicon Valley," a humanoid robot stands amid rows of shelves filled with a variety of products, its sleek metal body moving smoothly and precisely between the aisles.

With its knees slightly bent, the robot deftly grabs a bag of chips from the middle shelf with its flexible, multi-jointed arms, adjusting its grip to avoid damaging the packaging. It then places the item in a trolley and moves on to the next section.

Developed by Beijing Galbot Co., Ltd., the robot made a splash at the recently concluded World Conference on Artificial Intelligence with its flexibility. It is a clear demonstration of China's progress in humanoid robotics, achieved through the joint efforts of government, industry and academia.

STATE SUPPORT

The Chinese government has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the robotics industry through a variety of initiatives and incentives at the local level.

According to guidelines issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, the country plans to launch various robotics innovation programs and encourage investment in the development of software and key components for humanoid robots. It is also working to promote cooperation between industry companies, universities and research institutes.

In the city of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, southern China, a dedicated “robotics valley” brings together dozens of leading universities, research institutes and tech companies, creating a hub where ideas flow freely from labs to factories.

The domestic humanoid robot market is expected to reach 870 billion yuan (about $121.9 billion) by 2030, according to the China Society of Electronics.

ENTREPRENEURIAL INITIATIVE

The industry's potential to transform sectors ranging from manufacturing to healthcare, coupled with government support, has encouraged many market participants to turn technological visions into everyday reality.

Wang He, a graduate of Tsinghua University and Stanford University, founded Galbot in May 2023, aiming to develop versatile humanoid robots with artificial intelligence based on multimodal large models. The company introduced its first-generation robot, Galbot /G1/, just one year after its founding. The robot has wheels, two manipulators, and a foldable body. It can climb up to 2.4 meters and bend down to retrieve objects from the floor.

The company is currently seeing a steady increase in orders for its robots, with plans to roll them out nationwide by the end of the year. They are already operating around the clock in nearly 10 pharmacies in Beijing, distributing more than 5,000 types of medicine daily.

According to industry data, there are more than 80 humanoid robot companies in China by the end of 2024. More such companies were created in China in the first half of this year alone than in all of 2024, with more startups preparing to enter the market.

FORMING SYNERGY

As global competition in robotics intensifies, China is leveraging its unique ecosystem of leading universities, tech firms and government support to close the gap between lab breakthroughs and commercial viability.

“Galbot currently has research centers in Beijing, Shenzhen and Suzhou (Jiangsu Province, East China), which deeply integrate resources from industry, education and science,” said Zhu Hui, the startup’s chief product officer. She added that the company has collaborated with Peking University and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence to establish a joint lab to develop embodied artificial intelligence to solve technological problems in the industry.

According to Zhu Hui, the industry still needs to step up efforts to improve the intelligence of humanoid robots, enhance their ability to perform complex tasks, and adapt to unstructured environments. In addition, the high cost of production also limits the widespread adoption of robots in daily life.

Despite the challenges, the development prospects of China's humanoid robot industry are promising, Zhu Hui added. With continuous technological innovation, cost reduction and expanding application scenarios, humanoid robots are expected to become an integral part of daily life and industrial production, she said. -0-
