BOGOTA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay died at 01:56 local time (06:56 GMT) on Monday, two months after he was wounded in a shooting at a political rally in June.

“The medical team responsible for Mr. U. Turbay’s care in all areas of our institution worked tirelessly for more than two months since he was admitted with serious injuries,” the Santa Fe Foundation hospital in the capital, Bogota, said in a statement.

“Despite all efforts, the outcome was tragic, and we therefore express our solidarity with the entire family of U. Turbay at this moment of deep sorrow,” the hospital’s statement added.

"This act of violence is a blow not only to the senator… but also to democracy, freedom of thought and the legitimate exercise of political activity in Colombia," the country's government said after the attack.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Three major Chinese financial institutions on Monday announced measures to simplify procedures for overseas central banks and similar institutions to open domestic accounts, a latest move to further streamline the country's bond market environment.

The National Interbank Finance Centre said it had eased documentation requirements for opening accounts and accessing relevant networks, noting that both Bond Connect and settlement agency accounts no longer required a letter of commitment to comply with regulatory requirements.

The center expects that the measure will improve the efficiency and convenience of overseas central banks, monetary authorities, international financial institutions and sovereign wealth funds investing in China's interbank bond market.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said at a press conference at the White House on Monday that he was deploying the National Guard to help restore law and order and public safety in Washington.

D. Trump also said he had formally invoked the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control.

“Today is D.C. Liberation Day, and we are going to take back our capital,” the American leader noted.

The president said his administration deployed 500 federal agents to the district last week, including members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Park Police, the Marshals Service, the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly criticized the situation with violent crime and homelessness in Washington, accusing local authorities of mismanagement and threatening to place the District of Columbia under federal control.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser praised the safety of the capital in an interview with MSNBC on Sunday, saying, “We have seen a significant reduction in violent crime in the city over the last two years, bringing it down to its lowest level in 30 years.” –0–

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday vowed to evict all homeless people from the U.S. capital, Washington.

“The homeless need to leave now. We will provide you with places to live, but away from the capital,” the American leader wrote in a post on his social platform Truth Social. “Criminals, you don’t need to go anywhere. We will put you in jail where you belong,” he added.

According to D. Trump, this step is intended to cope with the sharp increase in the number of crimes in the capital.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, however, denied the claim.

"We've spent the last two years reducing violent crime in this city to a 30-year low," Bowser told MSNBC.

According to statistics from the Metropolitan Police Department, violent crime fell 26 percent in the first seven months of 2025, after a 35 percent decline in 2024, while overall crime fell 7 percent. –0–

TEHRAN, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Iran is ready to accept some restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, but considers the issue of completely halting uranium enrichment "non-negotiable," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi said recently.

“Iran can show flexibility regarding enrichment capacities and limits, but under no circumstances will it agree to stop it, since it is of vital importance to us, and we must rely on ourselves, not on empty promises,” M. Takht-Ravanchi said in an interview with the Japanese news agency Kyodo Tsushin on Saturday.

Asked about the possibility of resuming Iranian-American talks on the nuclear program, he said: “Iran is ready to negotiate with the United States, but Washington should first clarify whether it is interested in a win-win dialogue or in imposing its will.”

On June 13, two days before the start of the sixth round of proxy talks on Iran's nuclear program with the United States, Israel launched massive airstrikes on several Iranian sites, including nuclear and military facilities, killing senior military officials, nuclear scientists and scores of civilians. Iran responded with several waves of missile and drone strikes against Israel.

On June 22, the US military bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan. Iran responded by striking the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

On June 24, after a 12-day war, a ceasefire was reached between Iran and Israel.

In recent days, Washington has repeatedly demanded that Iran completely stop enriching uranium, but Tehran has categorically rejected this demand. –0–

TEHRAN, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday warned against any potential U.S. moves aimed at achieving hegemonic goals in the South Caucasus region under the pretext of investment and peace.

As noted in a statement released by the Iranian presidential office, M. Pezeshkian made the relevant statement during a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

He noted that Iran welcomes the peace agreement signed on August 8 in Washington between its northern neighbors Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as any agreement that will promote peace, especially between regional countries.

However, the Iranian president warned that the agreement should guarantee peace and development, and not become a tool for foreign states to achieve their hegemonic goals through interference.

Touching upon the topic of relations between Iran and Armenia, M. Pezeshkian stated that they are “strategic, constructive in nature” and “based on the principles of good neighborliness and mutual respect for the territorial integrity of both countries.”

N. Pashinyan, for his part, spoke in detail about the recently signed agreement and stated that Armenia will not sign any agreement without first being fully convinced that it will take into account Iran's interests and considerations and aspects that are sensitive to it, the statement said.

The Prime Minister noted that Armenia attaches a special, exclusive status to its strategic ties and cooperation with Iran. He added that all important decisions and actions of Armenia will be taken after bilateral consultations and agreements with the Iranian side. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has issued revised regulations on the work of party schools (administrative academies), according to an official notice released Monday.

According to the notice, the amendments are intended to improve the education system and operating mechanisms of these schools to fully utilize their role as the main channel for educating and training cadres and party members.

It is noted that they are of great importance for the formation of a team of key leadership personnel capable of taking on the important task of national revival.

Under the revised provisions, party schools should strengthen the ability of party members and officials to contribute to advancing Chinese-style modernization.

These educational institutions should also strengthen the training of Party members and officials so that they can more effectively carry out their duties.

It is pointed out that such training should be carried out based on the important decisions and orders of the CPC Central Committee and the strategic needs of the state, and the main focus should be on enhancing the ability to promote high-quality development, serve the people, and prevent and eliminate risks.

The original version of the regulations was released by the CPC Central Committee in 2019. –0–
