Moscow, August 12 /Xinhua/ — Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, in an interview with Izvestia, expressed hope that the upcoming meeting between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will give new impetus to the normalization of bilateral relations, including in resolving the issue of resuming direct flights between the countries.

“Although it is clear that the leaders will focus on completely different topics,” added S. Ryabkov. According to him, progress in returning diplomatic infrastructure facilities has not yet been recorded.

According to the Izvestia newspaper, the Russian consulate general in San Francisco, the trade mission in Washington, and its branch in New York were closed in 2017 due to sanctions. In 2018, the Russian consulate general in Seattle also ceased to operate. In addition, Russian diplomats lost access to the Killenworth estate on Long Island, near New York, and to a country complex in Maryland, located 100 km from Washington. Russia owned some of these properties, while others were leased.

On August 8, D. Trump announced that he was counting on meeting with V. Putin in Alaska on August 15. Then, plans for a meeting between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States were confirmed by the aide to the Russian president, Yuri Ushakov. –0–

NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that gold would be exempt from tariffs, sending gold futures prices sharply lower.

“Gold will not be subject to duties!” he wrote on the social network Truth Social.

Gold futures prices, backed by deliveries of bars from Switzerland and other key trading and refining hubs, rose sharply on Thursday and Friday on speculation that U.S. customs officials would levy duties on 1-kilogram and 100-ounce gold bars.

Gold futures for August delivery fell more than 2 percent on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Monday.

The United States recently imposed a 39 percent tariff on goods imported from Switzerland, which holds significant gold reserves and plays a key role in settling gold futures on the international market. –0–

DOHA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Al Jazeera on Monday condemned the killing of five of its employees by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the channel described the attack as “yet another blatant and deliberate attack on press freedom.”

“This attack comes amid the catastrophic consequences of the ongoing Israeli offensive on Gaza, which has resulted in the merciless massacre of civilians, forced starvation and the destruction of entire communities,” the statement said, holding Israeli forces and the government responsible for the “deliberate targeting and killing” of journalists.

The channel stressed that the attack on its correspondents was “a desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending takeover and occupation of Gaza.”

Al Jazeera called on the international community and all relevant organizations to take decisive action to stop the “ongoing genocide” and put an end to the deliberate attacks on journalists.

The channel said the Israeli army killed five of its correspondents on Sunday when it attacked their tent outside the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. The IDF said one of those killed was affiliated with Hamas. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Domestic film "Dead to Rights" about the Nanjing Massacre committed by Japanese invaders in the Chinese city during World War II has grossed over 2.2 billion yuan (about 308 million U.S. dollars) during its summer release in China, according to an online film platform.

The film thus broke the record for box office receipts in the summer release among historical films. Summer release in China covers the period from the beginning of June to the end of August.

As of August 11, total box office revenue in China since the beginning of summer, including advance ticket sales, has exceeded 8.7 billion yuan, and since the beginning of 2025 – 36 billion yuan.

In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, "Nanjing Photo Studio" tells the story of a group of Chinese civilians who hid in a photo studio from the atrocities of the invaders during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing and risked their lives to provide the outside world with photographic evidence of the massacre in the city. -0-
