JERUSALEM, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir on Wednesday approved the concept of the government's plan to expand the offensive in Gaza to areas not yet under Israeli control.

The Israeli army said the attack would target refugee camps in central Gaza and the southern al-Mawasi district, where most of Gaza's 2.2 million residents have taken refuge.

The principles of the plan were approved at a meeting of security officials earlier on Wednesday, the statement said, adding that “the basic concept of the plan for the next stages of the [operation] in the Gaza Strip was presented and approved in accordance with the instructions of the political leadership.”

The approval of the plan's concept came three days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military had been ordered to begin a "decisive phase" of the Gaza war, aimed at capturing the remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City, refugee camps in central Gaza and the southern al-Mawasi neighborhood. The order was condemned by the international community amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — The 7th China International Petroleum and Petrochemical Technology and Equipment Expo opened in Karamay city in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday, the city's press service said.

More than 400 companies from nine countries, including China, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Singapore and Italy, were represented at the three-day event, which runs until Friday.

The exhibition, with a total area of 33 thousand square meters, consists of 6 special zones: equipment for the oil and gas and chemical industries, alternative energy and new materials, intelligent computing, scientific innovations, etc.

The exhibition will also feature a number of energy events, including a showcase of the latest energy technologies from Central Asian countries. They will be attended by around 2,000 government officials, industry leaders, and representatives of international organizations and businesses from countries including, in addition to the above-mentioned countries, India, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Director of the Institute of Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation Charymukhammet Shallyev expressed hope during an interview that China and Central Asian countries will be able to further expand cooperation in the field of oil equipment and petrochemical technologies.

Co-organized by China National Petroleum Corporation (PetroChina), China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), the exhibition, which was first held in 2012, serves as an important showcase for advanced energy technologies and a key lever for promoting industrial upgrading.

Let us recall that the city of Karamay is located in the northwest of the Dzungarian Basin and is an important oil and petrochemical base for China. The country's first large oil field was discovered here after the formation of New China in 1949. -0-

UN, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — The safety of shipping lanes in the Red Sea must be ensured, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Geng Shuang said at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Yemen on Tuesday.

Last month, the Houthis claimed responsibility for the sinking of two commercial vessels in the Red Sea: the Magic Seas and the Eternity C.

China is deeply concerned about this and called on the Yemeni Houthis to respect the navigation rights of commercial vessels of all countries in the Red Sea in accordance with international law and stop harassing and attacking them, Geng Shuang said in his speech.

"The safety of shipping lanes in the Red Sea must be ensured, as well as the safety of civilians, including sailors. The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Yemen must also be respected," he said.

According to him, active efforts should be made to advance the peace process in Yemen. Geng Shuang called on both sides to resume interaction, move in the same direction, demonstrate maximum sincerity in resolving their differences, achieve the greatest possible consensus for reconciliation, and make maximum efforts to restore peace.

The humanitarian crisis must be resolved as soon as possible, he added, noting that Yemen is experiencing one of the world's worst food crises. Almost half the country's population faces acute food insecurity and some 4.8 million people are displaced.

“The international community should increase humanitarian aid to Yemen, support its economic development and efforts to improve living conditions, and help the Yemeni people get through these difficult times,” Geng Shuang stressed. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — China's marine economy maintained steady growth in the first half of this year, Gu Wu, an official with the Ministry of Natural Resources, said Wednesday.

She made this statement during the next meeting of the discussion platform for all media outlets “Roundtable on the Chinese Economy”, organized by Xinhua News Agency.

According to preliminary estimates, China's gross marine product (GMP) grew by 5.8 percent year-on-year to 5.1 trillion yuan (about $714.1 billion) during the reporting period, the agency said.

As noted by the ministry, in 2024, China's marine economy reached a significant milestone: China's GMP exceeded 10 trillion yuan for the first time, reaching 10.54 trillion yuan, up 5.9 percent from the previous year.

Notably, the services sector was the largest contributor to the maritime economy in 2024, accounting for 59.6 percent of the total GMV. The maritime industry was the key driver of growth, accounting for more than 30 percent of the total.

The eastern coastal province of Shandong, with a GMV of 1.8 trillion yuan in 2024, ranked first among all regions in China in terms of added value of seven marine industries, including marine fisheries, energy and transportation.

Wang Rentang, head of the Shandong Provincial Maritime Affairs Bureau, said at a roundtable that the cargo turnover of the province's ports reached a new milestone last year.

According to official data, in 2024, the cargo turnover of Shandong ports exceeded 2 billion tons, which allowed the province to rank first among all regions of China for the third year in a row.

Given the strategic importance of the marine economy, China has firmly placed it on the country's development agenda. At a high-level meeting in early July, Chinese leaders stressed that to advance China's modernization, it is necessary to "promote high-quality development of the marine economy" while "pursuing the path of achieving national strength with Chinese characteristics by utilizing marine resources."

The meeting identified five priority areas: innovation-driven growth, stronger coordination, industrial renewal, harmony between human activities and the ocean, and mutually beneficial cooperation. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — During unannounced special raids launched by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism across the country in July this year, some risks of emergencies and market disruptions in tourist areas were identified, after which local cultural and tourism departments were ordered to take immediate measures to eliminate the identified problems.

The ministry said several inspection teams have been dispatched to eight provincial-level regions across the country, including Tianjin City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Gansu and Qinghai provinces, and have found safety risks such as blocked emergency exits in commercial premises, faulty fire-fighting equipment, and lack of safety equipment such as lifebuoys and life jackets in water-based entertainment facilities through undercover inspections.

The Ministry also pointed out potential road safety risks, including violations of traffic regulations by tourist bus drivers.

In relation to business entities that fail to comply with the requirements to correct the situation, strict punitive measures will be taken in accordance with the law, or information about their shortcomings will be transferred to the competent authorities for further consideration, the department added. -0-
