BAGHDAD, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Iraqi security forces carried out two airstrikes on Islamic State (IS) hideouts, killing a group of terrorists inside, Iraq's Joint Operations Command (JOC) said Saturday.

The first strike by F-16s on Tuesday targeted a key IS hideout in Salah al-Din province, according to intelligence information, and the terrorists inside were killed, the KLO said in a statement.

A second raid was carried out on Thursday, targeting another IS hideout in the northern province of Kirkuk. The KLA said further details would be released later.

Meanwhile, the KLO announced the capture of Salman Khudair Suleiman Dawood, one of the most wanted militants in the country for his previous involvement with al-Qaeda and then ISIS.

While Iraq declared victory over ISIS in 2017, remnants of the group continue to carry out attacks on security forces and civilians in cities, deserts and remote areas. –0–

GAZA, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — A million women and girls in Gaza are facing mass starvation, violence and abuse, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said on social media on Saturday.

“Hunger is spreading rapidly in Gaza… Women and girls are being forced to resort to increasingly dangerous survival strategies, such as going out in search of food and water, at extreme risk of being killed,” UNRWA said in a statement.

The agency called for Israel's blockade of Gaza, home to more than 2 million people, to be lifted and for humanitarian aid to be provided "on the scale required."

The statement came as Gaza's health authorities reported on Saturday that 11 new deaths from starvation and exhaustion had been reported in the past 24 hours, including a child. The total number of deaths from starvation reached 251, including 108 children.

According to official statistics from the enclave's health departments, the total number of Palestinians killed since the start of the current round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on October 7, 2023, has exceeded 61,800, while more than 150,000 have been injured. –0–

CAIRO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Thirty-one Arab and Islamic countries, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Gulf Cooperation Council in a joint statement strongly condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remarks about creating a so-called "Greater Israel."

A statement released late Friday condemned the Israeli prime minister's words as a "flagrant violation" of international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions and reiterated the invalidity of any measures or decisions aimed at legitimizing the occupation, including settlement activity in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The signatory countries were Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Gambia, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The statement characterizes the Israeli side's statements as a direct threat to the national security of Arab countries, the sovereignty of states, and regional and global peace and security.

The document also strongly condemns the approval by far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich of the E1 settlement plan and his radical comments rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state, while emphasizing that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory.

The statement warns of the grave dangers posed by Israel's intentions and policies aimed at annexing Palestinian territory, and reiterates the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and for humanitarian access to the Palestinian enclave without any conditions.

It also reiterated its rejection of the forced displacement of the Palestinian people in any form or under any pretext.

Earlier this week, Netanyahu told Israel's i24 TV that he feels he is on a "historical and spiritual mission" and is "very" attached to the vision of a "Promised Land and Greater Israel."

On August 13, B. Smotrich announced that he had approved the construction of 3,401 residential units for Israeli settlers in one of the most disputed areas in the occupied West Bank. –0–

Exclusive: Strengthening the power of developing countries plays a key role in the formation of a multipolar world – Russian expert

St. Petersburg, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — The economic growth of developing countries is leading to the formation of a new complex global architecture in which the Global South will play a much more important role, Lyudmila Veselova, associate professor of the Department of Strategic and International Management at the Higher School of Business of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, told Xinhua in an interview.

According to her, economic development and the strengthening of the power of developing countries play a key role in the transformation of the post-war international order. “This process leads to the formation of a more multipolar world, in which the influence of Western powers, including the United States, is gradually being revised in favor of a more balanced distribution of power,” the expert noted.

Veselova believes that after World War II, institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the United Nations largely contributed to the dominance of the United States and its allies. However, the rapid rise of China, India, Brazil, ASEAN, and other emerging economies has changed the global dynamics. Today, as Western countries face a slowdown, the share of the Global South in global GDP continues to increase, and new groupings, including BRICS and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, are weakening the monopoly of Western institutions.

Developing countries, according to the expert, increasingly act together on foreign policy issues. Against the backdrop of economic crises, internal contradictions and foreign policy miscalculations, the positions of the United States and other Western countries are weakening, and China, with its growing potential, is becoming an alternative center of influence.

The Russian expert noted that the 2008 financial crisis became a catalyst for the strengthening of the role of developing economies in global politics and economics. “First, it revealed the structural weaknesses of the Western financial system, such as speculative bubbles, opaque banking, and excessive dependence on the dollar. Second, emerging market countries became convinced of the instability of the unipolar system and began to look for alternatives. Third, the gap in economic growth rates between the West and the Global South became even more obvious,” she said. According to the expert, these factors significantly strengthened the positions of developing countries in international formats such as the IMF, WTO, and G20.

“Today, a hybrid world order is being formed: the West retains influence, but no longer as a monopoly, and the BRICS and Global South countries offer alternatives,” the interlocutor emphasized. “Multipolarity is inevitable, but the West seeks to slow down this process with the help of sanctions, pressure and control over key technologies. In these conditions, it is important for the countries of the Global South to create a sustainable alternative and reduce dependence on Western financial and technological resources,” concluded L. Veselova. –0–

Moscow, August 16 /Xinhua/ — Russia respects the position of the US leadership on the need for a speedy end to hostilities in Ukraine, the Kremlin press service reported on Saturday.

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the leadership of the presidential administration, the government, the State Duma, ministries and departments following the Russian-American negotiations.

The leaders of the two states discussed practically all areas of interaction, including a possible resolution of the Ukrainian crisis on a fair basis. "Of course, we had the opportunity, which we did, to talk about the genesis, about the causes of this crisis. It is the elimination of these root causes that should be the basis for the settlement," said V. Putin.

The head of state called the visit to Alaska timely and useful.

"We, of course, respect the position of the American administration, which sees the need for a speedy end to military actions. Well, we would also like this and would like to move to resolving all issues by peaceful means," said V. Putin. -0-

TBILISI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — The Surami bypass road, the second section of the Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti highway, part of the E60 highway connecting the east and west of the country, opened to traffic in Georgia on Saturday. The project is part of an international transport network that plays an important role in strengthening ties between Europe and Asia.

This was announced on Saturday by Xiang Jinsheng, deputy general manager of the International Company of the 16th Engineering Bureau SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited and the project manager. According to him, the official opening of traffic took place at 9:30 a.m. local time.

TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will set off on a two-day tour of Armenia and Belarus on the evening of August 18.

This was announced by the presidential adviser on political issues Mehdi Sanaei in a post on the social network X.

M. Sanaei noted that the agenda of the visits includes improving bilateral ties with Armenia and Belarus, especially in the field of trade, as well as signing cooperation documents. He added that the trip was initially planned for the end of June, but was postponed.

M. Pezeshkian's visit to Armenia will take place against the backdrop of the signing of a peace agreement on August 8 in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been in conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since 1988.

The peace agreement envisages the creation of a transit corridor through southern Armenia, with exclusive rights to develop the project granted to the United States.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its disagreement with the presence of trans-regional players in the region and warned against changes in the geopolitics and historical borders of the region. –0–
