China has always pursued a friendly policy toward Afghanistan, advocated equality for all countries and adhered to the principle of non-interference in the country's internal affairs, Wang Yi said.

He stressed that China respects the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan, as well as the development path chosen by the Afghan people, their unique national conditions and religious traditions, adding that China is ready to provide all-round support to Afghanistan's aspiration for development and revival.

Beijing supports Kabul's policy aimed at prioritizing economic development and is ready to contribute to its development and revival, Wang Yi noted.

China will continue to oppose unreasonable pressure on Afghanistan and the freezing of its assets, supports the early resumption of joint patrols in the Wakhan Corridor to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas, and calls on Afghanistan to take resolute measures to curb the activities of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement and other international terrorist groups to ensure the security of China-Afghanistan cooperation, he said.

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — "Wow! This is something new!" a tourist from Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, suddenly stopped at the Chamber of Commerce Plaza in Heilongjiang Park in Heihe City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, excitedly clapping her companion on the shoulder and pointing to a lifelike fish print and exquisite Russian-style wooden carvings a few steps away.

“It’s so rare to get the chance to see so many wonderful things up close,” Ms. Feng said.

According to the Guangming Daily, the 15th China-Russia Culture and Art Fair was recently ceremoniously opened in Heihe. The China-Russia Intangible Cultural Heritage Fair, organized within the framework of the fair, has caused a huge stir among tourists.

The sights here are simply mind-boggling! The intricate miniature stone carvings, the bright multi-colored Manchu embroidery—you can’t take it all in. Just as you start looking at one, a crowd of spectators immediately gathers around another. Li Junlong, an heir to the tradition of miniature stone carving, demonstrates his work by saying, “Look at this piece, I carved a panda pendant following the natural texture of the stone.”

Russian tourist Natalia says with a smile: "Chinese handicrafts are so exquisite. My son learned how to make straw paintings at the fair, we really enjoyed it."

Following the voice, we come across Zhang Zhanjie, an heir to the technique of making straw products, who is teaching Natalia's son how to make bookmarks.

Fresh straw is first soaked in water for 2 hours, then subjected to multiple treatments: bleaching, disinfection, dyeing. The boy carefully selects colored straw, cuts the green one into bamboo branches, turns the yellow one into its leaves, forming bamboo step by step.

“In Chinese culture, bamboo symbolizes modesty and indomitability of spirit,” explains Zhang Zhanjie.

A few steps away, members of the Russian delegation, masters of decorative and applied arts, present their works: painted ceramics, textile dolls and other items. Ceramics master Larisa, holding a simple white plate, teaches tourists to draw red patterns, and they, in turn, diligently repeat after her.

Nearby, the newly opened Heihe International Night Market is bustling. Li Chun, a tourist from Guangdong Province (South China), spotted a stall with a long queue and hurried to take a seat, all the while taking pictures on his phone. “The trip to Heihe is going really well!” he said.

“We invite everyone to come and have a stroll, the fun is not limited to what you see!” says Sun Yingjian, head of the Heihe City Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism.

According to him, this year, more than 40 events were organized within the framework of the China-Russia Culture and Art Fair in Heihe, which were aimed at integrating culture and tourism.

“One of the goals is for tourists to enjoy cultural flavor during their trip,” Sun Yingjian emphasized. -0-

JERUSALEM, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Israel on Wednesday launched a new offensive on Gaza City to crush the Palestinian Hamas movement, a move that has drawn international criticism for its impact on civilians in the enclave.

According to IDF spokesman Efi Defrin, the armed forces have begun the next phase of the operation “at the direction of the political leadership.” He said ground attacks are already underway in the Zeitoun area of Gaza City and the nearby town of Jabalya, with additional forces preparing to join the fighting.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the offensive was aimed at “defeating Hamas and capturing Gaza City.” The IDF said it now has “operational control” of about 75 percent of the Gaza Strip after repeated offensives that left much of the enclave’s largest city in ruins.

The Israeli cabinet is expected to meet later this week to finalize the offensive plan. The army said 60,000 reservists had been mobilized, with another 20,000 expected to be added in the coming days.

“We will inflict even greater damage on Hamas in Gaza City, the stronghold of government and military terror,” Defrin said, vowing to destroy infrastructure “above and below ground” and break the civilian population’s dependence on Hamas. He noted that 22 months of fighting had already transformed Hamas from a “military group” into a “worn-out guerrilla organization.”

Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours have killed at least 58 people and injured 185 others, according to Gaza health authorities. At least 62,122 people have died in the enclave since the start of the current round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, including 266 who have died of starvation, including 112 children. –0–
