BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Tacheng Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region launched two TIR (Transport International Road) routes on Wednesday, starting from Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, crossing the border at Baktu Port in the prefecture and eventually reaching Almaty in Kazakhstan and Moscow in Russia, respectively, the prefecture's press service said.

Recently, four trucks loaded with mechanical equipment, inspection equipment, fresh flowers and other goods left Shenyang and headed to Almaty and Moscow respectively, marking the launch of the two routes.

TIR is an international system that simplifies the transportation of goods between countries. Within its framework, the goods are sealed at the starting point of the route and checked only upon arrival at the destination, and at intermediate border crossings, checkpoint officers only check the TIR carnet data and the customs stamp for the vehicle. Following the launch of a simplified customs clearance model at the Baktu checkpoint on 20 July, a corridor was created for TIR vehicles, which allows for preliminary verification of declared information electronically and checking of seals in order to speed up customs clearance.

SHENYANG, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Ten people were slightly injured when a tornado hit Liaozhun District of Shenyang City, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, at 9 p.m. on Thursday, local authorities said.

193 buildings also sustained varying degrees of damage. Local residents were evacuated to safer locations.

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — More than 100 pro-Palestinian activists held protests in three major cities in South Africa on Thursday, calling on the government to ban coal exports to Israel, which is accused of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Protests against the energy embargo, organised by activist group Palestine Solidarity Campaign, took place in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. Local media reported that protesters had handed in a memorandum to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.

South Africa exported about 1.6 million metric tons of coal to Israel, according to the document, which criticizes the government for allowing South African ports to be used as “conduits for the transport of fuel, minerals and other dual-use goods to apartheid Israel.”

The protesters said in a memorandum that the South African government must “lead the implementation of the coal embargo and end our complicity in supplying the Israeli electricity grid that fuels the genocide, illegal occupation and apartheid Israeli military-industrial complex.”

The South African government has accused Israel of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, which began with a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 Israelis and foreigners were killed and about 200 more were taken hostage.

WUHAN, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — China's Sinopec Corp., one of the country's three largest oil companies, announced Thursday that it has discovered a shale gas field with proven reserves of 146 billion cubic meters at the junction of Hubei Province and Chongqing City.

The discovery of the new field, which has been named “Hunxing,” is of great importance for ensuring the country’s energy security.

The gas in this field is located at a depth of 3.3 to 5.5 km. According to Sinopec, the geological structure of the field is very complex, which creates great difficulties in terms of its exploration and development.

Thanks to technological innovations, the volume of test gas production from one well at this field increased from 89 thousand to 323.5 thousand cubic meters per day.

Sinopec is currently developing five large shale gas fields, including Fuling, Weirong, Qijiang, Yongchuan and Hongxing. HAIKOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — An exhibition titled "Masterpieces of Contemporary Russian Art Masters" is being held at the Hainan Provincial Museum in the capital city of Haikou from July 18 to October 8 as part of the China-Russia Cross Culture Years.

The exhibition, organized by the Union of Artists of Russia, presents 5 sculptures and 30 oil paintings by 10 Russian masters of contemporary art.

“The exhibition is dedicated to contemporary Russian art, not the usual classics,” said the exhibition’s curator Zhu Yufeng, adding that the aim of the exhibition is to introduce the Chinese audience to the richer and more vibrant contemporary Russian art.

"Art knows no boundaries. Both Chinese and Russian art seem like two parallel mountain ranges that will eventually converge at the top of world art," Zhu Yufeng noted.

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, here on Thursday, saying the all-weather friendship between Pakistan and China is unique and covers various fields and levels.

Sh.
