TEHRAN, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Forces from Iran's Intelligence Ministry have destroyed a "terrorist" group in the country's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, killing six of its members and arresting two others, the ministry said Saturday.

A statement posted on the ministry's website said seven foreign nationals, members of a "terrorist group," had crossed the eastern border into Iran in recent days and attempted to carry out "targeted terrorist operations."

The statement added that the group members were equipped with various types of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices, and that items seized from the “terrorists” included laser grenade launchers, American-made machine guns, grenades, suicide belts, radios, ammunition, as well as several cars and motorcycles.

The group was attempting to attack a critical site in eastern Iran, the agency said, “the same military targets that Israel attacked during the 12-day war” with Iran in June.

The available evidence points to links between the "terrorist" cell and Israel, the document says.

Three Iranian security forces were wounded during the clash with the “terrorists,” which lasted several hours, the statement said. –0–

“Our efforts are aimed at better maintaining the stability of the Afghani and preventing serious fluctuations,” the bank’s representative, Hasibullah Noori, was quoted as saying by the media.

GAZA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) killed a Palestinian journalist in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday, Palestinian sources said.

Medical sources told Xinhua that Khaled al-Madhoun, a cameraman for the official Palestinian TV channel in the Gaza Strip, was shot dead by the IDF.

Eyewitnesses said H. al-Madhoun was killed while working in an area west of the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahiya.

The Palestinian Union of Journalists said that “attacks on journalists are crimes aimed at concealing the truth, but they will not break the resolve of Palestinian media heroes who continue to carry out their mission despite all the risks.”

The death of H. al-Madhoun brings the number of Palestinian journalists killed in the Gaza Strip since the war began on October 7, 2023, to 240, the union said.

The IDF has not commented on the incident.

Let us recall that Israel has been waging a full-scale war in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, following an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel, which, according to Israeli authorities, resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages.

More than 62,100 Palestinians have died in the war, according to authorities in the Gaza Strip. –0–

TIANJIN, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Preparations are nearing completion in the megacity of Tianjin, a major port city in northern China, to host the largest-ever summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1. Leaders of more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations will attend the event.

“Tianjin is a city that makes you feel welcome and inspired at the same time. It is the local people and their warmth that left the deepest impression on me,” said Muhammad Sarfraz, a doctoral student at Tianjin University from Pakistan.

In preparation for the summit, the city has undergone extensive modernization work. The Haihe River, which runs through Tianjin, is now illuminated at night thanks to a lighting project covering 217 buildings, 14 bridges and an 8.2-km-long riverfront.

These magnificent night views of the river are attracting more tourists than ever before. There are more than 70 night cruises every day, which continue until late at night. Tickets are in great demand, said Fan Fukun, manager of Tianjin Jinlv Haihe Cruises Co., Ltd.

Nazanin Dehghanbordbar from Iran praised the city’s combination of tradition and modernity. “Tianjin is a perfect bridge between ancient and modern. Here I feel the development of the city and feel connected to great souls and people.”

The city administration also pays attention to improving the city's infrastructure, including road repairs, bridge maintenance, expansion of green areas and strengthening public services.

According to Hu Xuechun, head of the Tianjin Municipal Management Committee, these efforts have given the city "a stronger sense of local dynamism, cultural depth and international appeal."

A team of nearly 1,000 young volunteers from local universities have been trained in diplomatic etiquette, emergency response and language services to help host the SCO summit. Volunteer interpreter Wang Yutong from Tianjin Foreign Studies University said: “The world will see not only our modern cityscape and economic dynamism, but also our rich history and warm hospitality.”

Neighbourhood volunteers, including pensioners, students and party members, also joined the “SCO service teams” in their areas to help create a friendly atmosphere.

"We are making the most of this important opportunity of holding the SCO summit in Tianjin, steadily advancing our preparations and service support and providing everything necessary for this major international event," said Yu Pengzhou, a Tianjin official involved in the organizational and preparatory work for the event.

Director of the Institute of World Politics of Kyrgyzstan Sheradil Baktygulov is looking forward to the summit. “The SCO summit in Tianjin will take place at a difficult time of global instability, but it will become a guiding star, showing the right path to safe and stable development,” he said. -0-

YINCHUAN, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — The 9th International Tangut Studies Conference opened in Yinchuan, capital of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, on Friday. A new book titled "The Sculpture Collection from Heishui Cheng of P.K. Kozlov's Expedition of 1907-1909 and 1924-1926" attracted the attention of participants.

This is the first collection of sculpture monuments excavated in the city of Heishui and stored in Russia, which was jointly compiled by scientists from China and Russia as a result of systematic research and work on organizing.

As it became known, the publication, released in Chinese and Russian in July 2025 by the Gansu Cultural Publishing House, is considered one of the important achievements in the field of humanitarian cooperation and research between China and Russia. Its editors-in-chief were co-director of the Chinese-Russian Institute of Tangut Studies Du Jianlu and deputy director of the Hermitage G.V. Vilinbakhov.

This edition includes 171 sculptural objects. All their photo illustrations were made by the Russian side in high-resolution digital format, clearly demonstrating the textures, artistic specificity and the smallest details of the artifacts. Each photo illustration is accompanied by brief information about the size and scientific value of the object.

According to Du Jianlu, the 171 pieces include clay, wood, stone and metal sculptures made using the techniques of in-the-round sculpture, relief and engraving. The sculptures, dating back to the Xi Xia period (1038-1227) and the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), cover both secular and Buddhist themes, representing a society with a rich secular life and deep spiritual faith.

Most of these items have been published for the first time and serve as valuable materials for studying the religion of the Xi Xia and Yuan Dynasties, the historical evolution of fine arts and cultural exchanges along the Silk Road, Du Jianlu said, adding that the work on the book received financial support from the Rare and Unique Disciplines Individual Project of the National Social Science Foundation of China and the National Publication Foundation.

Let us recall that the Tangut Kingdom /Xi Xia, or Western Xia, Da Xia, Great State of the White and High/ is a Tangut state that existed in 1038-1227 to the northwest of the Chinese kingdom of Song and later the Jurchen Jin, on the territory of the modern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as well as parts of the provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which controlled the eastern section of the Great Silk Road. The kingdom ceased to exist as a result of attacks by the Mongolian troops of Genghis Khan.

Due to the complex writing of the Tangut and a number of historical factors, Tangut studies were considered a “forgotten science” for many years. The study of the culture, writing, and language of the Tangut people began with the discovery of a large library of Tangut texts by P. Kozlov during excavations of the dead city of Khara-Khoto (in Chinese, Heishui Cheng) in 1909 in what is now the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In the first half of the 20th century, Russian and British adventurers brought back from China a huge number of manuscripts from the Tangut kingdom, 90 percent of which are currently kept in St. Petersburg. Based on the work of Russian scholars, Tangut studies began to be studied in China, Japan, and Germany.

Cooperation between China and Russia in the study of Tangut studies officially began in 2009, when the Institute of Tangut Studies at Ningxia University launched a Sino-Russian project called “Monuments from Khara-Khoto and the Study of the Xi Xia Kingdom.” In 2010, the Institute and the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences signed an agreement to establish the Sino-Russian Institute of Tangut Studies.

Over the past 15 years, this joint institute has successively published a series of research works, such as “A Series of Studies on the Monuments of Xi Xia”, “A Study of the Amended and Re-Approved Code of Heavenly Prosperity /abbreviated Tiansheng Luiling/”, “A Study of the Canons of Tangut Buddhism”, and “Commentaries and Facsimiles of the Written Monuments in Chinese from Khara-Khoto Stored in China”, “A Catalogue of Written Monuments in Chinese from Khara-Khoto in the Collection of Russia”. -0-

KHORGOS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Filming for the first China-Kazakhstan co-production web series titled "Waiting for You in Ili" began in the city of Khorgos in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Saturday.

Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Ili Valley, “Waiting for You in Ili” will focus on the coming of age of the young generation in a new era and international friendship. The film will tell a touching story of meeting, understanding and love between young people from China and Kazakhstan with different backgrounds who start a business together and strive for their dreams. The series vividly demonstrates the persistent pursuit of ideals and boundless love for life of today’s youth.

Let us recall that on July 16 of this year, within the framework of the 2nd television festival of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries in the city of Xi'an (the administrative center of Shaanxi Province, Northwest China), the start of production of the web series was announced.

“The series, which features the landscapes of Ili, multinational culture and youth entrepreneurship, also touches on cross-border trade between China and Kazakhstan. It is the best demonstration that the mutual visa-free policy of the two countries really benefits the people of the two countries,” said Umut Yelken, producer of the web series “I’m Waiting for You in Ili.”

"Even though it's my first time in Ili, I am honored to play a role in the series. It is very important for us to use the footage to tell the story of friendship between young people from the two countries," said Chinese actor Zhang Guangbei.

Ilham Ibragimov, CEO of Kazakhstan's Channel Seven, noted that the series will help further deepen friendly relations between the two countries and allow more countries to understand the culture and history of China and Kazakhstan.

As a practical example of audiovisual cooperation between the SCO countries, “I’m Waiting for You in Ili” is expected to be promoted simultaneously on China’s leading online platforms and in Kazakhstan’s mainstream media. -0-
