OTTAWA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine while on a visit to Kyiv, the prime minister's office said.

The C$2 billion (US$1.45 billion) funding was agreed at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June.

Of this amount, approximately C$835 million (US$603 million) is earmarked for the purchase of a range of critical equipment for Ukraine, including armored vehicles, medical equipment, small arms, ammunition, explosives and other necessary supplies, the press release said.

Another 680 million Canadian dollars /491 million US dollars/ will go towards purchasing military equipment from the US to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.

About 220 million Canadian dollars (159 million US dollars) will be allocated for the purchase of drones, counter-drone systems and electronic warfare, including investments in joint projects of Ukrainian and Canadian enterprises. –0–

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — SpaceX on Sunday canceled the 10th test launch of its powerful Starship rocket due to technical problems.

The launch was scheduled for 18:30 local time /23:30 GMT/ from Starbase in Texas, but problems with ground systems forced the company to cancel the attempt.

According to SpaceX, the test has similar goals to previous ones, including the first attempt at deploying a payload and multiple re-entry experiments to return the upper stage to the launch site. –0–

LONDON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Describing the West's limited understanding of China's sacrifices during World War II as a "real problem", Zoe Reid, honorary chairperson of the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding (SACU), said humanity must learn from history to chart a way forward.

Western education offers "limited" study of China's role in the war, she said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua ahead of commemorative events to be held in Beijing in September to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

“We in the West kind of think that World War II was just a European thing with a little bit of American involvement, and we don’t think about how the rest of the world suffered,” Reed said. “Obviously, we have very limited knowledge of what is happening and has happened in China.”

Z. Reid is of Chinese-British descent. Her father, an orphan during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, went to the UK to study in the 1940s with the support of Joseph Needham, a renowned British scholar and the first Chairman and President of SACU. Because of these deep personal connections to China, Z. Reid decided to continue Needham’s mission and became the Chair of the Society in 2009.

In recognition of her significant contribution to strengthening the friendship between the UK and China, the Chinese side has invited Z. Reid to the upcoming commemorative events in Beijing. She said she felt “very honoured” to receive the invitation.

“I am delighted that SACU’s many years of hard work have been recognised,” she added.

Founded in 1965 in London, SACU celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. For decades, the society has worked to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the British and Chinese people, with a particular focus on broadening the horizons of young Britons and deepening their understanding of China.

Looking to the future, Z. Reid said SACU would continue to expand its strategic collaborations with various partners to bring its ideas to a wider audience in the UK. The society also plans to fund travel and education for British students in China so that more young Britons can better understand the country.

Regarding UK-China relations, she stressed that understanding each other's history and respecting different development paths and viewpoints are key to maintaining healthy bilateral relations.

She also expressed hope that the UK and China could further strengthen cooperation on common global challenges such as climate change and global health.

OSLO, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on Sunday called the fatal stabbing of an employee at a rehabilitation center in Oslo "deeply tragic" and called for a thorough police investigation.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder after an attack on Sunday morning at a rehabilitation centre in Oslo's Kampen district. Police said the suspect had previously expressed right-wing extremist views and claimed the attack was politically motivated.

In a statement published on the social network Facebook, J. G. Stere expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and stressed that “any form of politically motivated violence is absolutely unacceptable.”

MINSK, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — During World War II, the spirit of the Chinese and Belarusian peoples made a huge contribution to ensuring peace today, Deputy Chairperson of the Belarus-China Friendship Society Alina Grishkevich told Xinhua in Minsk.

In her opinion, the Chinese people defeated the Japanese invaders because they were strong in spirit. “They are a heroic and invincible people, just like the Belarusians. During the Second World War, it was the spirit of the Chinese and Belarusian peoples, their desire for independence, for sovereignty, that made a huge contribution to ensuring peace today. And today, we also strive together to make an even greater contribution to maintaining peace,” she explained.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — China and the United States, as the world's major producers and consumers of agricultural products, have their own advantages in agriculture that can fully complement each other, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng said recently.

"China and the United States together account for nearly 40 percent of global food production and a quarter of global consumption. China has a comparative advantage in the production of labor-intensive agricultural products, while the United States specializes in land-intensive agricultural products thanks to mechanized large-scale production," Xie Feng said at the China-US Partnership Breakfast and Reception on Soybean Industry Cooperation in Washington.

“Agricultural exchanges and cooperation have not only provided greater choice to consumers in both countries, but also filled the pockets of American farmers,” the diplomat emphasized.

"They have given impetus to the transformation and modernization of agriculture in China and the United States and opened a new path for ensuring global food security," Xie Feng added.

The Chinese ambassador said agriculture should not be politicized and “farmers should not pay the price for the trade war.”
