BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — The 17th high-level forum on Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the World opened in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Aug. 23. More than 200 scholars from over 50 universities and research institutions in China and other countries gathered in Harbin to discuss topics such as "China-Russia relations and the development of Eurasia."
According to the China Daily newspaper, the forum was jointly organized by Heilongjiang University, the Institute of Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the Chinese Society for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, and the Far Eastern Federal University of Russia.
Chi Baoxu, Party Secretary of Heilongjiang University, stressed in his speech that in the 84 years since its founding, the university has formed distinct characteristics in the field of education related to Russia. In the future, the university will fulfill the mission of a high-level think tank, contributing to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia in the new era and promoting the opening up of Heilongjiang Province to the north.
Director of the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Sun Zhuangzhi noted in his speech that this forum is of great strategic importance and expressed hope that experts and scholars will strengthen cooperation in the field of research on Russia and raise the level of Russian research in China.
On August 24, the forum organized four parallel discussion panels on the theme “Deepening Cooperation in Eurasia and Building a Community of Shared Destiny for Humanity: History and Reality.” The participants discussed issues such as the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the current international order, global development initiatives and cooperation between China and Russia, security in Eurasia, reconfiguration of industrial and supply chains, relations between China and Russia and relations between China and Ukraine against the backdrop of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, humanitarian cooperation in Eurasia, and others.
In his closing remarks at the forum, Pan Dapeng, Vice-Chairman of the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies at CASS, stressed that research on Eurasian issues should expand the depth and breadth of research within the discipline of first-level regional studies, deepen the study of relevant issues such as changes in the world structure and the Eurasian space, the radical changes in Eastern Europe and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the situation in Eurasian countries, as well as bilateral and multilateral relations and regional cooperation among Eurasian countries, so as to provide intellectual support for China's participation in global governance and the promotion of the construction of the Belt and Road.
The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. In this context, this forum not only provides a platform for high-level dialogue on deepening China-Russia relations in the new era, but also becomes an important link for promoting coordinated development in Eurasia. -0-
