BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Enterprises from Jiangsu Province, one of China's economically developed regions, are accelerating their entry into the Central Asian market, the Nanjing Chenbao (Morning Nanjing) newspaper reported.

According to data released by Nanjing Customs, trade turnover between Jiangsu Province and five Central Asian countries increased by 3.4 percent year-on-year to 18.94 billion yuan in the first seven months of this year.

“The bottled beverage sector in Central Asia has high consumer purchasing power and great development potential,” Zhou Juan, a representative of Newamstar, shared in an interview with the newspaper.

Nuamstar is engaged in the development and production of beverage packaging equipment. The value of products supplied by the company to Central Asian customers in the first seven months of this year exceeded 6 million yuan.

In addition to continuously adapting production technologies to the needs of target markets, enterprises in Jiangsu Province are also actively expanding cross-border e-commerce channels.

“Through cross-border e-commerce, we maintain direct contact with overseas customers and monitor the dynamics of demand in overseas markets, which can significantly improve the efficiency of responding to orders and reduce enterprise costs,” said Shen Jinzhou, a representative of the engineering and installation company Huajing Purification, which recently supplied color-coated steel sheets to Tajikistan.

The entry of enterprises from Jiangsu Province into the Central Asian market is also due to the development of logistics.

Last Friday, a train departed from the SCO International Logistics Park in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, which will operate along the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan multimodal international freight transportation route.

The train is loaded with auto parts and other goods. The containers will first be transported by rail to the city of Kashgar in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region /Northwest China/, where they will be reloaded onto trucks and sent to Uzbekistan via the Irkeshtam checkpoint on the Chinese-Kyrgyz border. The transportation time is about 15 days.

From January to July this year, 473 freight trains were sent from the SCO International Logistics Park along the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan route, which is 32.87 percent more year-on-year. -0-

Astana, Aug. 27 /Xinhua/ — President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was awarded the highest state award of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Al-Nahda Order, in Astana on Wednesday. The award was presented by King of Jordan Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, Kazinform reported on Wednesday, citing the Akorda press service.

It is reported that on Wednesday in Akorda, K.-Zh. Tokayev held talks with King Abdullah II, who is visiting Kazakhstan, in narrow and expanded formats. Abdullah II noted the personal contribution of the Kazakh leader to strengthening friendly ties and cooperation between the two countries. The head of Kazakhstan expressed gratitude to the King and people of Jordan for their high assessment.

The parties discussed the prospects for strategic partnership and noted that bilateral relations are experiencing their most productive period in the past three decades. According to Kazinform, the King of Jordan emphasized the shared commitment to strengthening cooperation and deepening ties in various sectors, expressing confidence that the agreements reached and their implementation will become a solid foundation for expanding partnership.

As reported by Kazinform, during the visit it is planned to sign more than 15 agreements covering transport, energy, logistics, agriculture, IT and digitalization, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and other areas. The key event will be the Kazakh-Jordanian business forum in Astana with the participation of about 300 entrepreneurs and investors.

Special attention was paid to cooperation in the nuclear sphere. Chairman of the Board of the National Welfare Fund Samruk-Kazyna Nurlan Zhakupov announced the signing of an agreement between Kazatomprom and the national company of Jordan Jumco on the joint development of uranium deposits in the presence of the leaders of the two countries. The document provides for industrial research on the extractability and enrichment of uranium by the end of 2026. TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday that its forces killed 13 "terrorists" in three joint operations in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

The IRGC said in a statement carried by the official Sepah News that the ground forces, in cooperation with the country's intelligence units, carried out joint counter-terrorism operations early Wednesday morning. Some "terrorists" were also detained in the operation. However, the statement did not specify the number of those detained.

Detailing the operation in Iranshahr district, police spokesman Saeed Montazerolmahdi said security forces had killed eight militants who were involved in Friday's attack on police patrols in the same district. Five policemen were killed in the attack, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

He added that a significant amount of weapons and ammunition had been seized from “terrorists” in Iranshahr. Tasnim reported that some of the confiscated weapons and ammunition had been stolen by “terrorists” during a deadly attack on police patrol units.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Leaders from Asia, Europe and Africa will gather in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, the largest in its history, to chart the SCO's development path for the next decade.

In its 24 years of existence, the SCO, originally created to address security issues, has evolved into a comprehensive regional organization representing nearly half the world's population. Here's what you need to know about the SCO's journey so far and what to expect from the Tianjin summit.

A CONTINUOUSLY DEVELOPING REGIONAL ASSOCIATION

The SCO's prototype is the Shanghai Five mechanism, when China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan united in 1996 to address border security issues after the end of the Cold War. On June 15, 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established, with Uzbekistan also joining as the sixth member.

What began as a regional security group has evolved into a regional organization encompassing nearly half the world’s population, a quarter of the world’s land area, and a quarter of the world’s GDP. With the addition of India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus, the SCO now has 10 member states, as well as two observer countries and 14 dialogue partners.

In an effort to maintain regional security and promote common development, the SCO adheres to the “Shanghai Spirit,” which is characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the desire for joint development.

This spirit has helped the SCO chart a path of regional cooperation, overcoming differences in ideology, social structure and development paths and setting an example for a new type of international relations.

Over the past years, SCO member states have strengthened political mutual trust and carried out fruitful cooperation in various fields, increasing efforts to maintain regional stability, ensure stable growth of trade, implement joint infrastructure projects and take coordinated actions in areas such as food and energy security.

Through mechanisms such as the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure, SCO member states have effectively cooperated to maintain regional peace and stability by combating terrorism, separatism and extremism. The security architecture has been strengthened, and joint exercises have expanded to cyberspace.

According to the Trade Development Report published in 2022, in the 20 years since the establishment of the SCO, the total trade volume of the organization's member states has grown almost 100-fold, and their share in world trade has increased from 5.4 percent in 2001 to 17.5 percent in 2020, indicating the growing influence of the organization.

"The Shanghai spirit is the 'root' and 'soul' of the SCO," said Chinese Foreign Ministry Ambassador Fan Xianrong, who is responsible for the work of the Chinese national coordinator of the SCO.

According to Fan Xianrong, in the context of the constantly changing international situation, the SCO member states will continue to uphold this spirit by taking concrete actions, proposing their solutions to create a fair and equal system of global governance, and supporting the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.

CHINA: A STRONGER SUPPORTER OF THE “SHANGHAI SPIRIT”

As one of the founding members of the SCO, China has always attached priority to the SCO at the diplomatic level and firmly adhered to the "Shanghai Spirit". China has put forward a series of important initiatives and proposals, and contributed Chinese wisdom, judgment and dynamism to regional development.

China proposed to build a community of shared future for the SCO, an inspiring vision that enriches the “Shanghai Spirit.” China also put forward a proposal to build an “SCO common home” that enjoys unity and trust, peace and security, prosperity and development, good-neighborliness and friendship, and justice.

In the economic sector, trade and investment ties between China and other SCO member states have become increasingly strong, with cooperation spanning sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture and technology, contributing to the welfare of people across the region.

In 2024, the trade turnover between China and the SCO member states, observer states and dialogue partners reached a new historical high of US$890 billion in value terms, accounting for 14.4 percent of China's total foreign trade that year. In the same year, the number of China-Europe freight train shipments passing through SCO countries and regions reached 19,000, up 10.7 percent from 2023.

China welcomes the widespread use of the Beidou navigation system and participation in the creation of the International Scientific Lunar Station, and is also ready to provide SCO countries with at least 1,000 quotas for training digital technology specialists in the next three years.

Since assuming the rotating SCO chairmanship in July 2024, China has closely cooperated with all SCO members and hosted more than 100 events under the theme of “SCO Year of Sustainable Development”, including ministerial meetings, the SCO Political Parties Forum, the SCO Media and Think Tank Summit, and the SCO Arts Festival.

"China will work with all SCO members to remain true to the original aspirations of the organization, fulfill its mission, promote the 'Shanghai Spirit' and propose SCO solutions for global governance and reform," said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Bin.

The summit will also adopt statements on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, as well as a number of final documents on strengthening cooperation in the security, economic and humanitarian spheres.

In addition, China will also put forward new thoughts and views on developing the “Shanghai Spirit”, fulfilling the SCO’s mission to meet the needs of the times and people’s expectations, and announce new measures and initiatives to support the SCO’s high-quality development and all-round cooperation.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE SCO SUMMIT IN TIANJIN

The upcoming 2025 SCO summit, which will bring together more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 senior officials from international organizations, is expected to reach consensus and guide the organization toward building a closer community with a shared future.

According to Liu Bin, the key results of the summit will be the signing of a declaration by the leaders of the SCO member states, as well as the approval of the organization's development strategy for the next 10 years.

"The Chinese side is convinced that a friendly, united and fruitful Tianjin Summit will advance the SCO to a new stage of high-quality development characterized by greater solidarity, closer coordination, more dynamic vitality and higher efficiency," he said.

Director of the Institute of World Politics of Kyrgyzstan Sheradil Baktygulov is looking forward to the summit. “The SCO summit in Tianjin will take place at a difficult time of global instability, but it will become a guiding star, pointing the right path to safe and stable development,” said Sheradil Baktygulov. -0-

ALMATY, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — More than 40 wind turbines installed in the vast grasslands of Kazakhstan's Akmola region are converting wind energy into clean electricity that is sent through a transmission network stretching over 40 kilometers directly to the country's capital Astana.

The wind power plant, built and operated by a Chinese company, was put into operation in September 2023, becoming the largest in Kazakhstan at that time.

The Akmola project is one example of broader green cooperation between China and its Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) partners, covering areas such as clean energy and environmental protection, new energy vehicles and sustainable transport, as they pursue shared goals of low-carbon growth and a greener future.

TRANSFORMING THE DESERT BACK INTO AN OASIS

Muynak, once a bustling fishing port in northwestern Uzbekistan on the shores of the Aral Sea, is now surrounded by desert. Rusting ships stuck in the sand bear silent witness to the ecological decline.

The Aral Sea, once the world’s fourth-largest inland lake, has shrunk by more than 90 percent since the 1960s due to large-scale irrigation projects and climate change. Its near-disappearance has led to a severe environmental crisis, with water shortages, desertification, and loss of biodiversity. The thriving town of Muynak has become a desert as residents have been forced to abandon it.

To tackle the crisis, experts from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have teamed up with Uzbek partners to explore new ways to restore the ecosystem with the goal of turning the desert back into an oasis.

In Muynak, a 30-acre salt garden was created, planting more than 30 salt-tolerant plant species from China to help restore fragile vegetation around the shrinking lake; solar-powered drip irrigation and integrated water and fertilizer technologies have significantly improved water efficiency, increasing crop yields and farmer incomes. A joint Chinese-Uzbek laboratory now serves as a key platform for environmental research, providing training and technical expertise.

“We are gaining invaluable knowledge from Chinese experts,” said Abdirashit Mirzambetov, head of the laboratory of biotechnology and plant physiology at Uzbekistan’s Aral Sea International Innovation Center. “We look forward to fruitful results that will significantly advance science, technology, and knowledge in Central Asia.”

Like Mirzambetov, Kyrgyz ecologist Anara Sultangazieva said that China's experience in combating desertification and water-saving irrigation could be a game-changer for SCO members.

“These solutions can help improve and protect our ecosystems while achieving low-carbon sustainable development,” she said.

MORE GREEN TRANSPORT FOR EVERYDAY LIFE

Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, recently launched a Green Mobility Week campaign to encourage residents to use greener modes of transport.

Chinese-made electric buses attracted great interest during the event.

Nesibeli, a 16-year-old schoolboy who rides them almost every day, called the buses “100 percent eco-friendly” and said: “They are very quiet, have comfortable air conditioning, and make life a lot easier.”

Taxi driver Askhat expressed a similar opinion, noting that his Chinese electric car is “fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly and equipped with a lot of smart technologies.”

In Almaty and many other Central Asian cities, electric vehicles from Chinese brands are becoming part of everyday life, supporting local green transport systems and low-carbon urban development.

In Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, city resident Nurkin is preparing to buy a Chinese electric car. In his opinion, Chinese NEVs are stylish, modern and competitively priced. “Many of my friends want to try them. I hope we will see more of them on the roads,” he shared.

The growing market share of Chinese EVs highlights the high level of trust in Chinese technology and manufacturing. Take Uzbekistan, for example: in 2024, the country imported 24,095 EVs, of which 23,982 were made in China.

China remains committed to its transition to high-quality, green development, in which clean energy and low-carbon technologies play a leading role, said Oleg Deripaska, Russian chairman of the Environmental Council of the Russia-China Committee of Friendship, Peace and Development.

Countries like Russia also hope for deeper exchanges and broader cooperation with China, he added. –0–

CARACAS, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil met with UN Resident Coordinator in Venezuela Gianluca Rampolla on Tuesday, expressing concern over recent US military actions in the Caribbean region, such as the deployment of a nuclear submarine, and calling on the UN to take appropriate measures.

“We discussed the threats from the United States that the region, declared a CELAC peace zone in 2014, faces,” he wrote in a post on the social media platform Telegram later that day.

According to I. Gil, Venezuela hopes that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will provide support “to restore common sense.”

I. Gil rejected US claims that its new deployments in the Caribbean are aimed at combating drug trafficking, noting that Venezuela is “a territory free of illegal crops.”

The guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie and the fast nuclear-powered submarine USS Newport News will arrive in the Caribbean early next week, media reported.

In response, the Venezuelan side demanded that Washington immediately stop new deployments in the Caribbean region and also called for guarantees that it will not deploy or threaten to use nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean region. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that China-South Korea relations should not be affected by external factors, calling for joint efforts to promote the development of bilateral ties.

He made this statement at a press conference, commenting at the request of media representatives on the words of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung that South Korea should not continue the policy of “security relying on the United States and the economy relying on China.”

Guo Jiakun noted that healthy, stable and deepening China-ROK relations serve the fundamental interests of the two peoples and are beneficial to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the world. "This is the common consensus of the two countries," he stressed.

The parties are developing their relations based on common interests, which are not directed against third countries and should not be influenced by third-party factors, the Chinese diplomat emphasized.

“China’s policy towards the ROK remains consistent and stable. We hope that the ROK will work together with China to jointly promote the sustainable, healthy and stable development of bilateral strategic cooperation and partnership,” he concluded. -0-

BISHKEK, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — The "Shanghai spirit" on which the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) operates has transformed into a serious, holistic concept of international relations, Sheradil Baktygulov, director of the Kyrgyz Institute of World Politics, said in an interview with Xinhua.

According to him, within the SCO, the voice of a small state is as important and valuable as the voice of a major power. “This is the main achievement of the “Shanghai spirit” and an innovation that has been introduced into international relations in the modern world,” the expert noted. It is clear that China, being one of the largest states in the world, treats the opinions of other states very carefully and with great respect, he added.

Over more than 20 years of development, the SCO has become a large “family” that encompasses 26 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Its “circle of friends” is becoming wider and wider, the agency’s interlocutor said.

"There is no bloc thinking in the SCO. There is no country or group of countries in the organization that dominates and dictates its conditions to other countries… These SCO principles are the basis of good-neighborly relations and friendship between countries," emphasized Sh. Baktygulov. This situation attracts more and more countries to the SCO, he believes.

The SCO is an important platform for the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", the political scientist said. As Sh. Baktygulov noted, the Chinese initiative "Belt and Road" fits perfectly into the concept of the organization's activities.

"When we talk about the role of the SCO in implementing the Belt and Road Initiative, we are talking about the fact that the SCO is one of the most authoritative and well-developed structures that coordinate our joint efforts to use the opportunities provided by this initiative. The decisions that are made within the SCO contribute to the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative," he believes.

According to the expert, the SCO is a model for the development of international relations. “The SCO, by its example, shows other countries of the Global South, regional organizations, how to successfully cooperate without pressure and coercion, without aggressive management methods, based on voluntary expression of will,” the political scientist said.

The SCO summit will be held in the Chinese city of Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. Sh. Baktygulov noted that the summit is being held in an expanded format, and its importance stems from the agenda, which is being formed due to global turbulence. “Of course, the decisions of the summit and those that will be announced by the leaders of the SCO member states will be of great importance,” the expert added. –0–
