UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — All members of the United Nations Security Council except the United States on Wednesday called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and demanded that Israel stop expanding military operations in the enclave.

"We call for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire. We call for the immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups. We call for a significant increase in humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza," the 14 countries said in a joint statement.

They also called on Israel to immediately reverse its decision to further expand military operations in the Palestinian enclave with the aim of capturing Gaza City. “This decision, which we reject, will inevitably worsen the already dire humanitarian situation and endanger the lives of all civilians, including the hostages,” they said in a joint statement.

States stressed that Israel must immediately and unconditionally lift all restrictions on aid delivery, including opening all land routes and allowing the UN and humanitarian partners to operate safely and at scale.

They stated that the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence must be central to humanitarian action.

The 14 countries mentioned include Algeria, the United Kingdom, Guyana, Greece, Denmark, China, Pakistan, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Slovenia, Somalia, Sierra Leone and France. –0–

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — El Fasher, a city in Sudan's North Darfur state that has been under siege for 500 days, has become the epicenter of children's suffering, U.N. humanitarian agencies said Wednesday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stressed that the already dire situation in North Darfur continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said malnutrition, disease and violence were claiming the lives of young people in El Fasher every day. An estimated 260,000 civilians, half of them children, have been trapped in the city and cut off from humanitarian aid for more than 16 months.

UNICEF said more than 10,000 children in El Fasher had been treated for severe acute malnutrition since January, almost double the number last year. At least 63 people, mostly women and children, were reported to have died from malnutrition in one week.

El Fasher, which is besieged by the Rapid Intervention Force (RIF) militia, has seen its supply lines cut off, UNICEF said. Health facilities and mobile feeding teams have been forced to suspend operations because their supplies have run out and new supplies have not arrived, leaving some 6,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition without treatment.

OCHA said the malnutrition reports came as cholera was spreading in North Darfur. “We and our partners have scaled up our response to cholera, including medical supplies and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) support, which has helped contain the outbreak,” it said. “However, new cases are emerging in remote communities where access to health care is limited.”

UNICEF also reported that more than 1,100 grave violations have been recorded in the city alone since the siege of El Fasher began in April 2024. In particular, more than a thousand children have been killed or maimed.

The number of child victims is almost certainly much higher, given limited access and problems verifying information, the foundation said. –0–

Recently, China's research icebreaker Xuelong 2 (Snow Dragon 2) returned to Shanghai after completing its 41st Antarctic expedition.

"This expedition involved research institutions and scientists from eight countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Thailand and Malaysia," said Gu Wu, director of the Department of Marine Strategic Planning and Economy of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. This has provided effective support for the protection of the Antarctic marine ecosystem and international governance, and is an important practice of China's active participation in international ocean governance.

In 2024, the maiden international voyage of China's deep-sea manned submersible Jiaolong carried scientists from eight countries, including Canada, Spain and Mexico, to jointly conduct research on marine biodiversity conservation with Chinese scientists.

In response to the UN Decade of Ocean Science initiative, China established a national committee for the implementation of the Decade of Ocean Science and developed a national action plan.

China also actively participates in international ocean governance, providing many public services. As of the end of 2024, under the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative, China has conducted more than 300 training courses, providing training opportunities for more than 6,000 young scientists from developing countries.

With China's participation, the Port of Piraeus in Greece has become the fourth largest container port in Europe; the Port of Gwadar in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is becoming a logistics hub and industrial base; the key high-quality joint construction project of the "Belt and Road" between China and Peru, the Port of Chancay, has started operation, becoming a new channel between Asia and Latin America for sea and land transportation in the new era.

In the first half of this year, Fujian Province opened the first direct container route to Ecuador, Yancheng Port in Jiangsu Province launched a new direct route to Jordan, the first batch of trains on the Jinhua-Turkmenbashi-Baku Trans-Caspian International Transport Route was launched, and the first Fuzhou-Quanzhou-Thailand combined sea and rail transport was completed.

In addition, the ocean is a link for interaction between people of different countries. According to the latest statistics, in the first half of this year, the total passenger flow of cruise ships and the number of cruise ships received by Chinese ports increased by 40.1% and 33.7% year on year, respectively.

Li Yingying, a junior research fellow at the Institute of Eurasian Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, wrote in an article for the Tianjin Daily on August 19 that cooperation within the SCO and the Belt and Road Initiative complement each other effectively.

The SCO has always adhered to the "Shanghai Spirit" – the principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity and the pursuit of common development, which is largely consistent with the principles of the Belt and Road Initiative – "joint consultation, joint construction and joint use".

In recent years, cooperation between China and countries along the Belt and Road has yielded fruitful results in areas such as policy coordination, infrastructure links, trade, financial integration and people-to-people exchanges, which has become a key impetus for SCO countries to overcome development obstacles and deepen practical cooperation.
