BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — China is willing to strengthen strategic mutual trust with Brazil, firmly support each other and deepen practical cooperation in various fields, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.

According to the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Chinese-Brazilian relations have entered the best period in their history.

As the Chinese diplomat noted, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have established a relationship of solid mutual trust and friendship, jointly providing important strategic guidance for building a China-Brazil community with a shared future.

Wang Yi added that China is willing to work with Brazil to accelerate the implementation of the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and deepen practical cooperation in various fields.

M. Vieira, in turn, recalled the telephone conversation between Chairman Xi Jinping and President L.I. Lula da Silva that took place two weeks ago, and expressed sincere gratitude for it from the Brazilian side.

The Brazilian Foreign Minister noted that international trade is currently facing great uncertainty and multilateralism is facing serious challenges. According to him, in this situation, it is very important for BRICS countries to closely coordinate.

The Brazilian side hopes to strengthen communication and coordination with China and relevant parties, explore ways to support the multilateral trading system and promote the reform of the World Trade Organization, Vieira added.

Wang Yi said that Brazil had fully fulfilled its responsibilities as the BRICS chair and ensured the success of the Rio summit, which contributed to strengthening solidarity and cooperation among countries in the Global South. The Chinese side highly appreciates Brazil's efforts, the Chinese Foreign Minister stressed.

As Wang Yi pointed out, today, when the international situation is undergoing complex changes, China is willing to strengthen coordination with Brazil, work with the BRICS countries to resist unilateralism and bullying, protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and promote the reform and improvement of the global governance system. –0–

ST. PETERSBURG, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — A story of heroism that future generations should remember — that's how visitors described rare photographs on display in St. Petersburg, where a photo exhibition "Remembering the Past, Creating the Future" was officially opened to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The exhibition was organized by the Consulate General of China in St. Petersburg, the Xinhua News Agency and China Image Group. Visitors were presented with dozens of photographs that revived memories of the exploits of the past war. Particular attention was paid to the feat of Soviet volunteer pilots who fought shoulder to shoulder with their Chinese comrades. The exhibition shows the deep military friendship, sealed with the blood of the peoples of China and Russia during the World Anti-Fascist War.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in St. Petersburg Luo Zhanhui emphasized that 80 years ago, the peoples of China and Russia, fearlessly fighting on the frontlines, made an invaluable historical contribution to the protection of state sovereignty and national dignity, the preservation of peace and justice throughout the world. According to him, now China and Russia are permanent members of the UN Security Council and partners in comprehensive strategic interaction in the new era, so they are jointly responsible for protecting the results of the victory in World War II and preserving the post-war international order.

"This exhibition is a visible memory of how our peoples fought against a common enemy," noted Olga Migunova, Deputy Chairperson of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society in St. Petersburg. The exhibition evokes warm feelings; the photographs on display show a real brotherhood of peoples, she added, pointing out the importance of the younger generation knowing this history of Russian-Chinese brotherhood, on which the future of our world depends.

“This is a story of mutual respect, willingness to share and learn new things about another people and culture. We fought and shed blood together,” says exhibition visitor Anna Sokolova, deputy director of the Krasnogvardeisky cultural and leisure center. She remembers most of all a 1937 photo from Shanghai, in which a baby is crying by the railroad tracks after a Japanese bombing. That day, more than 200 women and children waiting for a train were killed in the raid.

As Deputy Chairperson of the Leningrad Region Committee for External Relations Inna Bigotskaya emphasized, China has made a very significant contribution to the fight against fascism and militarism. “We must remember the heroism of the fighters, Chinese and Soviet, who fought against the occupiers. The historical memory of the joint fight against fascism lives in the hearts of our peoples and influences modern Russian-Chinese relations,” she believes. –0–

TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Three European countries — France, Germany and Britain, known as the E3 or "Euro-3" group, and the European Union on Thursday informed Iran of their intention to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.

According to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, during a telephone conversation, Foreign Ministers David Lammy of the United Kingdom, Jean-Noël Barrot of France, Johann Wadephul of Germany and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas informed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi of their plans to formally notify the UN Security Council about the launch of the sanctions snapback mechanism.

The snapback mechanism is part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. It allows other parties to reimpose international sanctions if Iran fails to comply with the agreement.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, European representatives also expressed their readiness to find a diplomatic solution to the disagreements within the next 30 days and prevent the return of UN Security Council sanctions resolutions.

Iran's foreign minister described the European move as "unjustified, illegal and devoid of legal basis," recalling Iran's "responsibility and goodwill" in remaining committed to a diplomatic solution to nuclear issues.

A. Araghchi assured that Iran will respond to this decision in an “adequate” manner in order to protect its rights and national interests.

The Iranian diplomat stressed Iran's seriousness in defending its interests and legitimate rights under international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and expressed hope that the EU-3 would properly "correct this wrong step" in the coming days. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — The upcoming Tianjin summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has three major missions, namely, achieving consensus among all parties, stimulating the driving force of cooperation and planning for future development, Ambassador Fan Xianrong, in charge of the Chinese national coordinator of the SCO, told Xinhua.

The largest SCO summit since its establishment will be held from August 31 to September 1 in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin. Chinese President Xi Jinping will preside over the 25th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State and the “SCO Plus” meeting, where he will deliver keynote speeches. At the invitation of the Chinese side, more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 officials from international organizations will take part in the summit.

According to Fan Xianrong, China aims to make the Tianjin Summit friendly, united and fruitful. The leaders of the SCO member states will sign and publish a declaration, approve the SCO development strategy for the next 10 years /2026-2035/, make statements on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in World War II and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, and adopt a number of final documents on strengthening cooperation in the field of security, as well as in the economic and humanitarian spheres.

The SCO was founded in Shanghai on June 15, 2001. It occupies a particularly important position in the overall planning of Chinese diplomacy and is an important priority for China's diplomatic work with neighboring countries.

"Since taking office as the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping has attended all SCO summits. Based on the strategic vision of the leader of a major power, he personally plans and leads the relevant work, indicating the directions and outlining plans for the development of the organization. He promotes the conceptual innovations of the SCO, keeping pace with the times, outlines the directions of pragmatic cooperation within the SCO with a focus on economic development and improving people's well-being, and guides the SCO to actively participate in improving global governance," Fan Xianrong said.

According to him, in the 24 years since the founding of the SCO, thanks to China's active contribution and the joint efforts of all parties, the organization has creatively put forward the "Shanghai Spirit" characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the pursuit of common development, and put it into practice.

"By comprehensively promoting cooperation in such areas as politics, security, economics and humanitarian affairs, the SCO has made important contributions to maintaining regional security and stability and promoting the development and prosperity of various countries, embarked on a fruitful path of peaceful development, and serves as a model for building a new type of international relations," the Chinese diplomat added.

Fan Xianrong noted that the "Shanghai Spirit", which is the "root" and "soul" of the SCO, is highly consistent with the purposes of the United Nations Charter. It is inextricably linked with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and fully meets the demands of member states in pursuing stability, development and unity. It has surpassed such outdated concepts as the Cold War mentality and clash of civilizations, and has been widely recognized by the international community.

From the original 6 founding members to the “greater SCO family” that spans three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa and consists of 26 countries, including 10 member states, 2 observer states and 14 dialogue partners, the SCO has become the world’s largest comprehensive regional cooperation organization in terms of geographic coverage and population. Its influence, appeal and attractiveness in the international arena continue to grow.

"The SCO will continue to open its doors and welcome more countries that endorse the 'Shanghai Spirit' to join the 'big SCO family,'" Fan Xianrong said.

China assumed the rotating presidency of the SCO in July 2024 after the Astana Summit. According to Fan Xianrong, under the slogan of “Promoting the Shanghai Spirit: SCO in Action”, China, guided by Xi Jinping’s initiative of building a common home featuring unity and mutual trust, peace and tranquility, prosperity and development, as well as good-neighborliness, friendship and justice, and focusing on the theme of “Year of Sustainable Development”, has contributed to the implementation of more than 100 activities under the presidency, effectively promoting the interconnectivity of infrastructure, the alignment of regulations and standards, and the rapprochement of peoples among the SCO countries.

"China will take more pragmatic measures and adopt a more progressive approach to advance cooperation in the fields of politics, security, trade, economy and people-to-people ties, as well as institutional reform within the SCO, so as to improve the well-being of the peoples of the SCO countries and promote the building of a closer SCO community with a shared future," Fan Xianrong said.

The diplomat noted that the SCO is currently at a key stage in improving the quality and level of its development, facing both opportunities and challenges.

"China will work with all parties to promote the high-quality development of the SCO, making special efforts in five aspects of work, namely improving security mechanisms, jointly creating and seizing development opportunities, continuously strengthening good-neighborliness and friendship, safeguarding international fairness and justice, and maintaining openness and inclusiveness," Fan Xianrong said, adding that the organization, through the "SCO Plus" model, will attract more countries to participate in cooperation in various fields within the SCO framework, so as to bring more stability and positive energy to achieving long-term peace and common prosperity in the world.

"The Tianjin Summit will be held at the global level to meet the expectations of all parties. It will lead the SCO to a new stage of high-quality development, featuring greater solidarity, closer cooperation, more dynamic vitality and higher efficiency," Fan Xianrong said. -0-
