SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The Republic of Korea's special prosecutor on Friday indicted Kim Geun-hee, the wife of ousted former President Yun Seok-yol, on charges of corruption and bribery.

Kim Geon-hee, who has been held in a pretrial detention center in Seoul since August 12, was charged by independent prosecutor Min Joon-ki, who is investigating the corruption case involving the former presidential couple.

The special prosecutor's team said in a brief statement that Kim Geon-hee was charged with violating the capital market law, the political funds law and the bribery-by-brokerage law.

Kim Gun-hee has become the first wife of a former South Korean president to face trial in custody.

Yun Seok-yeol has been held in a separate detention center since July 10 on charges of rebellion related to his brief imposition of martial law last December.

Kim Kun-hee, in turn, is suspected of involvement in stock price manipulation from 2009 to 2012, interference in the nomination of candidates for the 2022 parliamentary by-election and the 2024 general election, and receiving expensive gifts from the Unification Church in exchange for business favors. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — Building a community with a shared future for mankind has evolved from an initiative proposed by China into a consensus in the international community, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said Friday.

The initiative has evolved from a beautiful dream into a multifaceted practice, making a historic transition from bilateral to multilateral, from regional to global, from development to security, and from cooperation to governance, Ma Zhaoxu said at a press conference on the upcoming Victory Day celebrations in China.

“The new vision has overcome the rules of the ‘narrow circles’ of bloc politics, the hegemonic logic of ‘power above all else’, providing a new approach to international relations and global governance,” the deputy minister stated.

"It goes beyond the so-called 'universal values' described as such by some Western countries," Ma Zhaoxu added. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The role of the United Nations should be strengthened, but the organization also needs reform, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said on Friday.

"The serious crises of recent years have repeatedly reminded us that the role of the UN must be strengthened, not weakened. Its status must be preserved, not replaced," the deputy minister said at a press conference in Beijing.

According to him, the effectiveness of the UN depends on the observance by member states of the UN Charter and compliance with international law and the basic norms of international relations.

“At the same time, the UN needs reform and improvement to better respond to global challenges, and this especially concerns increasing the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs,” Ma Zhaoxu emphasized. -0-

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday asked the Security Council to authorize the deployment of an international force to Haiti.

“I urge the Council to act urgently and authorize the deployment of an international force, supported by the UN in the form of logistical and operational support, as well as predictable funding,” he said at a Security Council meeting on the country.

Security measures must go hand in hand with increased pressure on the instigators of violence in Haiti. This includes an effective arms embargo, as well as a targeted expansion of sanctions against gang leaders and sponsors, arms dealers and others associated with them, Guterres said.

U.S. Chargé d'Affaires to the United Nations Dorothy Shea said Thursday that Washington and Panama are introducing a draft resolution in the Security Council to create a "counter-gang force" and a regional U.N. support office. The latter would provide the mission with tools to combat gangs and allow the Haitian state to meet the basic needs of its people, she explained.

According to the diplomat, the new international force must be provided with resources to control territory, ensure infrastructure security and complement the work of the Haitian National Police. In parallel, a comprehensive approach is needed to curb gang financing, illegal arms trafficking and other illegal flows that fuel instability, D. Shi said.

Currently, the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) is operating in Haiti. It is supported by the Security Council but does not have the status of a UN operation.

It is unclear whether the proposed Anti-Gang Force will replace the MMPB or be built on top of it. –0–

THE HAGUE, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The Netherlands and Sweden have called on other EU member states to increase pressure on Israel, citing the "unbearable" humanitarian crisis in Gaza and settlement expansion in the West Bank.

In a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on August 27, Dutch Foreign Minister Ruben Brekelmans and his Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergaard said “more must be done to increase pressure on the Israeli government to change course and comply with its obligations under international law.”

The ministers proposed sanctions against aggressive settlers in the West Bank and “extremist Israeli ministers” who “encourage illegal settlement activity and actively work against the agreed two-state solution.”

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains extremely alarming and unbearable. The suffering of the civilian population is beyond description," the letter says. It is necessary to allow the distribution of aid throughout the Strip, the foreign ministers emphasized.

The ministers also warned that Israel's recent decision to expand its military offensive in Gaza could lead to "large-scale displacement of civilians into ever smaller enclaves." -0-

SHENZHEN, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — China's first plant specializing in the production of photonic quantum computers (PQCs) is under construction in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.

Once completed, the plant is expected to produce dozens of these computers per year, making serial production of FCCs possible.

The operation and construction of the new plant will be handled by Qboson, a leading Chinese quantum computing company based in Beijing, according to the Shenzhen Nanshan District Science and Technology Innovation Office.

“Quantum computing has huge information capacity and increased parallelism capabilities, which allows exponentially faster solving complex computing problems,” Wen Kai, founder of Qboson, told Xinhua.

He explained that PQC is a technology that uses the quantum properties of light for computing and is considered a major trend in quantum computing. Compared with other technological paths, photonic quantum computing does not require ultra-low temperatures and has several other advantages, including a large number of qubits, stable operation at room temperature, and longer coherence time.

The new plant will include three main operating units: module development, full-system manufacturing, quality control and testing. The factory building is currently under construction, and the process of equipping the premises is planned to begin by the end of October 2025, Wen Kai said. -0-
