BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — An international academic conference on "China and Russia: The Path to Modernization 2025" was held in Beijing on Friday.

At the event, scholars from China and Russia held in-depth discussions on issues such as “new changes in the global political and economic situation and their impact on China and Russia”, “the current macroeconomic situation of China and Russia and the challenges they face”, and “Chinese-Russian practical cooperation in trade and economic spheres under new historical conditions”.

Zhao Zhimin, secretary general of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CAS), noted that China and Russia are fellow travelers on the road to modernization. Continuing to strengthen and deepen Sino-Russian relations is an inevitable choice for both sides to promote their own development and rise.

The current academic conference serves as a high-level platform for comprehensive and in-depth discussions on theoretical and practical issues of modernization among representatives of Chinese and Russian academic circles, and is of great significance to promoting mutual learning and deepening practical cooperation in various fields between the two sides, he added.

In his video address, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Nikolai Makarov noted that in the context of growing fragmentation of the global economy and increased protectionism, scientists from the two countries need to pay attention to issues of modernization, exchange research results, learn from each other’s experience, and put forward proposals for the further development of Russian-Chinese relations and the joint promotion of modernization.

Sun Zhuangzhi, Director of the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, expressed hope that this academic conference will be held regularly and become a platform for dialogue and exchanges between scholars of the two countries, and help deepen and strengthen Chinese-Russian humanitarian exchanges to bring more fruitful results.

The event was jointly organized by the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the Kazakh Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. -0-

SHENZHEN, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — China's third-generation Hualong-1 nuclear reactor has 41 units in operation or under construction, making it the world leader among such reactors, the China General Nuclear Power Corporation said Friday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.

Hualong-1 is a completely self-developed third-generation nuclear technology of China, which has been found compliant with the European Operating Authority (EUR) requirements and has passed the General Design Assessment (GDA) conducted by the UK.

The technology has demonstrated excellent performance characteristics, and seven power units have already been connected to grids around the world, the corporation reported.

Let us recall that Hualong-1 generates more than 10 billion kWh of electricity per year, which can meet the annual production and household electricity needs of 1 million people in average developed countries. This is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 3.12 million tons per year and carbon dioxide emissions by 8.16 million tons per year. -0-

QINGDAO, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — The Russian Pavilion at the China-SCO Pearl International Exhibition Center is strengthening cultural, economic and trade ties between China and Russia by showcasing Russia's rich heritage and modern products.

Recently, the pavilion's exposition was replenished with new exhibits – traditional costumes of the Kuban Cossacks, donated by the city of Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar Region of Russia. These costumes are known for their exquisite decorations, bright elements and unique style. The exhibition of these costumes will allow guests from China and other countries to get acquainted with the culture and history of the Kuban Cossacks.

The China-SCO Pearl International Exhibition Center is located in the China-SCO Regional Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone in Qingdao. Since its opening, it has become an important channel for people-to-people exchanges and economic and trade cooperation within the SCO through organizing art exhibitions, trade fairs and cultural events.

Currently, in addition to national costumes, the Russian pavilion presents more than 80 types of Russian goods, including Siberian honey, drinking water from Lake Baikal, flour, dairy products and chocolate, which are popular with Chinese consumers. Also on display are paintings by Russian artists, Soviet-era orders, commemorative coins from Russia, nesting dolls, Russian folk crafts; Khokhloma painting, Gzhel ceramics, Orenburg downy shawls, Vologda lace, Tula samovars, Zlatoust silver engraving, Palekh miniatures and folk musical instruments.

As the head of the pavilion Svetlana Wang noted, the key mission of the pavilion is not only commercial activity, but also the promotion of humanitarian dialogue between the two countries. To this end, the pavilion regularly holds free cultural lectures for Chinese youth, provides consultations on studying in Russia, and, together with the Russian Cultural Center in Beijing, organizes such events as Russian Language Day, Maslenitsa celebrations, Victory Dictation, and other events.

On May 16 of this year, in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the World Anti-Fascist War, the Russian pavilion hosted a poetry evening entitled “Nobody is forgotten, nothing is forgotten!” The main goal of the event was to tell about the tragedy and heroism of the war years through the power of artistic words. The evening brought together Russians, students, teachers and numerous admirers of Russian poetry.

As part of the SCO Summer program, the Russian pavilion introduced both traditional and modern Russian culture to the Chinese public through art exhibitions and cultural performances. According to statistics, in 2024, the daily flow of visitors to the SCO Summer event increased by 31 percent year-on-year. A total of 84,000 people visited the event, clearly demonstrating the active cultural exchange between the two countries.

In recent years, the center has hosted high-level events such as the SCO Supply Chain Forum. In particular, at the 2025 SCO International Investment and Trade Expo, the Russian pavilion attracted many buyers and visitors with its unique art exhibitions and high-quality products.

“In the future, we will continue to deepen cooperation with various circles in China, and promote the entry of more high-quality Russian goods into the Chinese market,” said Svetlana Wang. According to her, as the Pearl China-SCO Expo Center develops, the Russian pavilion, which operates with the assistance of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in China, the Trade Mission and the Russian Cultural Center in Beijing, will play an increasingly important role in promoting interregional trade, economic and cultural exchanges between Russia and China, remaining a vivid testimony to the friendly ties between the two countries. -0-

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — Most of the global tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump have been struck down by a federal appeals court, which ruled that the White House chief abused his presidential powers in imposing them. The judges upheld the tariffs, sending the case back to a lower court for further action, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday upheld an earlier ruling by the Court of International Trade that found Trump had improperly used emergency legislation to impose tariffs. But the judges sent the case back to a lower court to determine whether it applies to everyone affected by the tariffs or just the parties involved in the case, the article said.

“The decision undermines the foundation of his /D. Trump – Xinhua/ aggressive trade policy that has reshaped the US economic relations with many countries around the world,” the New York Post wrote on Friday.

The ruling extends uncertainty over whether Trump's tariffs will ultimately remain in place. The case was expected to go to the Supreme Court for a final ruling, Bloomberg writes.

"Trump will almost certainly appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court. The appeals court has stayed its ruling until Oct. 14 to give the Trump administration time to ask the Supreme Court to hear the case," CNBC reported.

The Trump administration says the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) gives the president the power to impose tariffs of any size on specific countries if he deems it necessary to respond to an emergency in the United States, reporters say.

A lower federal trade court in late May ruled that position was wrong and struck down all of Trump's IEEPA-based tariffs, including the "equivalent" tariffs announced in early April. The Federal Circuit quickly stayed that ruling pending Trump's appeal, CNBC reported. -0-

MINSK, August 30 /Xinhua/ – China and Belarus should always remain the driving force of peace in the world, and peace is in the genes of both nations, said Chinese Ambassador to Belarus Zhang Wenchuan in an opinion piece published in the Belarus Segodnya newspaper on Friday.

According to him, for China and Belarus, the anti-fascist war is not only a difficult historical memory, but also a spiritual resonance that transcends time and space.

"When I look at the heroic land of Belarus, I deeply feel the historical resonance and spiritual consonance. For the sake of a common goal – to resist fascist tyranny, defend freedom and fight for peace – China and Belarus fought shoulder to shoulder. The friendship between the two peoples remains strong and over time, in the 33 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, it constantly bears new abundant fruits. Time flies, the smoke of war has long cleared, but the lessons of history must not be forgotten, the feats of the fallen heroes will live forever," Zhang Wenchuan noted.

The ambassador also recalled that this year China and Belarus held a series of commemorative events, honoring the memory of the difficult war years. On September 3, a jubilee celebration will be held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

"President /of Belarus/ Alexander Lukashenko has been invited to take part in this ceremony. I am convinced that his visit will play an important role in promoting the correct view of the history of World War II, jointly preserving the post-war world order and strengthening the Chinese-Belarusian friendship forged in the fire of war," Zhang Wenchuan emphasized.

"China and Belarus should always remain the driving force of world peace. Peacefulness is embedded in the genes of both nations. Our countries should hold high the banner of peace, development, mutually beneficial cooperation, adhere to genuine multilateralism, strive to promote peace and tranquility throughout the world, as well as the common progress of mankind," the ambassador summed up. –0–
