MINSK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is confidently becoming a global diplomatic player and is looking to the future. The peoples of Belarus and China made an invaluable contribution to the victory in World War II. Today, in an extremely difficult international situation, it is very important to jointly protect the memory of our common Great Victory. This was stated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in a written exclusive interview with Xinhua on the eve of his trip to China to attend the SCO summit in Tianjin and events to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

At the invitation of the Chairman of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, the head of Belarus will visit China for the 16th time. A. Lukashenko noted that he has known the Chinese leader for a long time. "Xi Jinping thinks strategically, looks decades ahead," he said. "In today's completely unpredictable situation, he boldly takes on leadership and offers not only China, but the entire world a clear and specific path of development. He has something that many politicians in the West should learn from: responsibility to his people, strategic thinking, and an iron will."

A. Lukashenko stated that Belarus and China are connected by the highest degree of mutual trust and respect. “For Belarus, Chairman Xi Jinping is not only a reliable partner, but also a sincere friend. Thanks to his unconditional support, Belarusian-Chinese relations have reached the highest level of all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership in history,” he noted. “In contrast to those who are trying to ‘bring democracy’ with bombs and sanctions, China shows that it is possible to develop peacefully and calmly, with respect for other states.”

The President of Belarus recalled that more than 30 years have passed since his first visit to China. “China was completely different at that time, but it immediately became clear: this country has the future,” he said. “Every time I come to China, I notice how quickly it is changing, and I admire how carefully they preserve their traditions.”

According to A. Lukashenko, China's achievements in areas where it has already become a world leader are impressive: in the production of industrial robots, the development of unmanned vehicles and trucks, and the development of artificial intelligence. China is making great efforts in the social sphere, in education and healthcare, aimed at improving the quality of life of people. "China as a whole is the brightest example of how to combine dynamic economic development with care for people," he emphasized.

A. Lukashenko said that Belarus was among the first to join the Belt and Road initiative and that cooperation with China has yielded tangible results over the years. He particularly noted that the Chinese-Belarusian industrial park Great Stone has become a working platform where enterprises with modern technologies, digital solutions and innovative approaches are created. “This is where competencies are born, new jobs are created and the future of the economy is shaped,” he said.

According to the President, he has the most positive expectations for the upcoming visit. A. Lukashenko expressed confidence that this visit provides another opportunity to deepen strategic partnership and gives new impetus to Belarusian-Chinese cooperation in trade and economic sphere, activation of joint projects in science, technology, industrial cooperation. “I am absolutely convinced: Belarusian-Chinese cooperation will only strengthen. Together we implement large-scale projects, support each other in the international arena. This is the true diplomacy of the 21st century,” the head of Belarus said.

According to A. Lukashenko, Belarus is ready to continue to work closely with the Chinese side in several key areas. Firstly, this is deepening the symbiosis of national development strategies, increasing cooperation in the areas of digital economy, logistics, high technologies, as well as searching for new ways to expand trade and economic integration. Secondly, the mechanisms of intergovernmental cooperation will be further improved to increase the efficiency of coordination and implementation of large projects, ensuring their full compliance with the common strategic interests of the parties. Thirdly, special emphasis will be placed on innovation and advanced technologies as a key driver of economic growth. The two countries have already jointly held the Years of Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation. Fourthly, Belarus and China will continue to expand humanitarian and cultural exchanges, strengthening mutual understanding and trust between their peoples.

A year has passed since Belarus joined the “Shanghai family”. A. Lukashenko said that the SCO is an organization looking to the future. Over 20 years, it has formed a unique model of regional security and development based on multilateral cooperation. The organization has proven that security issues can be resolved not through confrontation, but through joint measures – sharing intelligence, conducting exercises, building trust between states. Thanks to this, it was possible to prevent hundreds of terrorist attacks and create a system that stabilizes Eurasia. Several key conventions were signed, the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure /RATS/ was created, a threat database was formed, hundreds of joint operations were conducted. After 2020, the SCO added new key areas of cooperation – cybersecurity, biosecurity and public health protection.

"We can say that the SCO is confidently becoming a global diplomatic player. The organization offers a new approach to international relations, different from Western models of hegemony. Thanks to the "Shanghai spirit", equal cooperation and the search for compromises are ensured. The SCO integrates the Belt and Road initiative, forms the principles of digital governance and creates dialogue platforms for developing countries," said A. Lukashenko.

According to him, the economic component is no less significant in the SCO's activities. "I would even say that it should play a key role. To do this, we need to create effective mechanisms for mutual settlements in national currencies, develop investment infrastructure, logistics," the president emphasized.

He also noted that humanitarian and cultural cooperation is becoming increasingly important. The countries interact in the areas of education, justice and social protection, developing the “Shanghai spirit” of mutual respect.

“I would like to note the enormous and extremely important work of China, promoting the concept of a community with a common destiny for humanity, which is woven into the Shanghai cooperation program,” said A. Lukashenko.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. A. Lukashenko noted that the great war of resistance of the Chinese people became not only an integral part of national history, but also the most important chapter of the world anti-fascist struggle. "As a historian, I understand especially well how terrible this war was and what an invaluable contribution our peoples made to the common Victory. This is the greatest lesson in courage, fortitude and patriotism for many future generations of our fellow citizens," he said.

The head of state stated that the Xinhua Agency photo exhibition opened in Minsk to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory and the awarding of Belarusian veterans who participated in the battles for the liberation of China with jubilee medals of the PRC help preserve the memory of those events and educate young people on them.

"This is especially important today, in an extremely difficult international situation, when some are trying to distort and rewrite history, it is very important to jointly protect the memory of our common Great Victory," said A. Lukashenko. "In the future, Belarus and China will certainly continue to implement such joint projects, and will comprehensively support educational and cultural initiatives in order to preserve the truth and memory of that war and our Victory. Otherwise, everything could happen again."

Currently, the Global South is gaining momentum. “The countries of the Global South act independently based on their own interests. They refuse to automatically repeat other people’s decisions, insist on peaceful resolution of conflicts, equality and openness in the economy, advocate for the participation of all countries in solving global problems, including climate problems. This force is already influencing the world order, and its role will only increase. This is a new center of power,” A. Lukashenko noted.

“And in the future, we count on continuing fruitful cooperation with China as one of the undisputed leaders of the Global South and the entire world. For the sake of our countries, for the sake of our peoples,” the head of Belarus concluded. –0–

GAZA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — At least 57 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip on Saturday, Palestinian Civil Defense spokesman in Gaza Mahmoud Bazal told Xinhua.

On October 14, 1939, G.A. Kulishenko, leading a bomber group of the volunteer air force to aid China, raided the Japanese airfield in Hankou and inflicted serious damage on the Japanese army. On the way back, G.A. Kulishenko's plane was intercepted by the enemy, and one of the engines was shot down, as a result of which he was wounded in the chest and left shoulder. In order to protect the plane and people on the ground, the commander refused the parachute and made an emergency landing on the surface of the Yangtze River in the Chenjiaba area of Wanxian County, Sichuan Province. Two of his comrades swam to the shore, but the wounded Kulishenko was carried away by the current, and he died a heroic death at the age of 36. 20 days later, local residents found the pilot's body. They held a memorial service and funeral in his honor.

The Chinese and Russian peoples have cemented their deep friendship with their blood and lives, laying a solid foundation for Sino-Russian relations and a lasting friendship between the two peoples for many generations to come.

OSLO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — European Union (EU) foreign ministers gathered in Copenhagen on Saturday and unanimously called on the United States to reconsider its recent decision to revoke visas for Palestinian officials.

The US State Department said on Friday it was “denying and revoking visas for members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) ahead of the upcoming UN General Assembly.”

The meeting also discussed the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, but participants were deeply divided over whether to impose additional sanctions on Israel.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas told a press conference that while member states generally agreed on the seriousness of the situation, consensus on specific measures had not yet been reached.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who chaired the meeting, said more member states believe Israel is unlikely to change course without greater pressure.

Outside the meeting venue, protesters gathered calling for Denmark and the EU to take stronger action over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. –0–

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — A cultural event recently held at the Chinese Embassy in the United States provided an opportunity to reminisce about the deep friendship forged between the Chinese and American peoples during the World Anti-Fascist War.

The event, titled “Experience China – A Symphony of Stories of Friendship between the Peoples of China and the United States,” was held on Wednesday evening in the innovative form of “symphony and immersive storytelling.”

An expert from the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum took the stage with Chris Magee, the grandson of John Magee, the American missionary who secretly filmed the Nanjing massacre. They presented a “dialogue through the lenses of two generations” to highlight the justice and peace captured on film.

Storytellers from China and the United States have collaborated to recount the dramatic story of the 1942 Doolittle Raid rescue, using as a plot point the one-cent coin given by navigator Charles Ozark to Chinese farmer Liao Shiyuan as a token of gratitude for saving his life.

Recalling the history of the Chinese and American peoples who fought side by side against fascism for peace and justice, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng called on everyone to pay tribute to history and remember the most important contributions made in the main eastern theater of war; pay tribute to the friendship and cherish the inseparable bonds formed between the two peoples in the fire of war; pay tribute to the future and create additional impetus for humanitarian contacts.

The Chinese Ambassador noted that relations between China and the United States are full of stories of friendship between peoples.

"We need to bring our peoples closer together, encourage and facilitate travel and people-to-people exchanges, and promote mutually beneficial cooperation, rather than sowing fear and hostility, erecting barriers, seeking to decouple economies, and trying to turn back the wheel of history," Xie Feng said, adding that it is necessary to maintain cooperation and jointly create a brighter future for the world.

A similar event was also held on Friday at the Chinese Consulate General in New York. –0–

The SCO is strengthening its influence in the global system, demonstrating an example of equal and mutually beneficial cooperation

The largest SCO summit since its creation will be held from August 31 to September 1 in the city of Tianjin in northern China.

Ahead of the opening of the Summit, a reporter from China Internet Information Center Zhongguang interviewed Eric Kuvatov, head of the video production department of Kazakhstan today agency, to find out his opinion on the key topics of the upcoming Summit.

It is valuable that the SCO unites not only states, but also people, creating a solid foundation for long-term friendship.

Erik Kuvatov said that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization plays an important role in strengthening humanitarian ties. Thanks to educational programs, cultural exchanges and joint tourism initiatives, citizens of the SCO countries have the opportunity to better understand each other's traditions, get closer and build trust. It is especially valuable that the SCO unites not only states, but also people, creating a solid foundation for long-term friendship.

The SCO demonstrates its ability to unite countries with different cultures and histories for the sake of a common goal – stability and development

The SCO has consistently upheld the principles of openness and inclusiveness, making significant progress in its expansion. In 2025, many countries officially applied to join the SCO, seeking to become part of the “SCO family”. According to Eric Kuvatov, the attractiveness of the SCO lies in its principles of equality, openness and inclusiveness. In a situation where the world is facing new challenges, the SCO demonstrates its ability to unite countries with different cultures and histories for the sake of a common goal – stability and development. The practical effectiveness of the organization also plays an important role: projects in the fields of economy, security, culture show concrete results, which makes the “SCO family” especially attractive.

China's presidency of the SCO will give the organization additional dynamism and help the organization's countries keep up with the times

China assumed the rotating presidency of the SCO in July 2024 after the Astana summit. When it came to assessing China's role as the chair, Erik Kuvatov expressed the opinion that China has traditionally made a significant contribution to the development of the SCO. "During its presidency in 2024-2025, China is expected to increase its focus on innovation, digital cooperation, environmental projects, and sustainable development. I am confident that China will offer new impetus to expanding cultural and educational exchanges, as well as joint initiatives in the field of the green economy. This will give the organization additional dynamics and help member countries keep up with the times," Erik Kuvatov noted.

The Belt and Road Initiative fits seamlessly with the SCO's objectives

As is known, a number of SCO countries also participate in the "One Belt, One Road" initiative. According to Eric Kuvatov, the "One Belt, One Road" initiative organically combines with the SCO's tasks, because it is aimed at developing infrastructure, trade ties and humanitarian contacts. For the SCO countries, this opens up new opportunities: modern transport routes, tourism development, cultural dialogue. China's contribution to this initiative is especially valuable, because it helps to form a more interconnected, open and sustainable space for cooperation.

SCO shows that a collective approach is more effective than unilateral action

Erik Kuvatov said that the SCO can further strengthen its influence in the global system, demonstrating an example of equal and mutually beneficial cooperation. By supporting the idea of building a community of shared destiny for humanity, the organization contributes to a more just and sustainable world order. The SCO is capable of offering unique solutions – from humanitarian cooperation to joint steps in the field of security and ecology, showing that a collective approach is more effective than unilateral actions.

TIANJIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have made a number of achievements in environmental cooperation, significantly promoting the rise of green economy and sustainable development in the region, Chinese Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Guo Fang said Saturday at a press conference on the sidelines of the 2025 SCO Summit, which starts Sunday and runs until Monday in Tianjin.

According to her, the SCO has created a platform for exchanging environmental information, which brings together laws and regulations on environmental protection, relevant policies and standards, and environmental management systems of SCO member states. With the help of this platform, enterprises can expand their market opportunities, the official noted.

Since 2021, China has held more than 30 multilateral or bilateral technical exchange events in sectors such as green development, climate change response and biodiversity protection. These events have attracted nearly 1,000 industry representatives and played an active role in promoting the application and popularization of green and low-carbon technologies in SCO countries, Guo Fang said.

China has also organized various training sessions on waste management, informatization, biodiversity protection and ecological restoration, as well as water purification and other issues, Guo Fang said.

China will join forces with other SCO member states to reach consensus, expand cooperation, promote the region's green transformation and confront global environmental challenges, she said. -0-
