TIANJIN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has an even greater responsibility to maintain regional peace and stability and promote development and prosperity for countries in a world where uncertainties are rising and changes unseen in a century are accelerating, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Sunday.

Xi Jinping made the remarks at a welcome banquet for foreign guests of the 2025 SCO summit, which is being held in Tianjin City, north China, from August 31 to September 1.

Before the banquet, the Chinese leader and his wife Peng Liyuan warmly welcomed the arriving foreign leaders and their spouses.

Speaking at the banquet, Xi Jinping expressed confidence that with the concerted efforts of all parties, this summit will be a complete success, that the SCO will certainly play an even more significant role, achieve even greater development and make an even greater contribution to the unity and cooperation of its member states, to uniting the forces of the Global South and to promoting the progress of human civilization.

The SCO was founded in Shanghai in June 2001 by six founding countries and has since grown into a family of 26 countries from Asia, Europe and Africa, comprising 10 member countries, two observer countries and 14 dialogue partner countries.

Bringing together such large emerging market economies and developing countries as China, Russia and India, the SCO represents almost half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy.

The Tianjin summit is the largest annual SCO summit in its history. During it, member states are expected to adopt key documents, including the organization's development strategy for the next decade.

Xi Jinping will chair the meeting for the second time, which will bring together leaders from more than 20 countries and 10 international organizations. Before the summit, he held more than a dozen bilateral meetings with foreign leaders visiting Tianjin.

As Xi Jinping noted at the banquet, Tianjin, as an open and inclusive city, is currently at the forefront of China's reform and opening-up, and holding this summit here will certainly give new impetus to the sustainable development of the SCO.

According to the Chinese leader, since its founding, the SCO has served as one of the key factors in the formation of a new type of international relations and a community of shared destiny for mankind.

Xi Jinping announced that on September 1, the 25th meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council and a meeting in the “SCO Plus” format will be held as part of the summit.

He specified that the participants will discuss plans for cooperation and development in the interests of improving global governance.

In conclusion, Xi Jinping expressed hope that the “Shanghai Spirit” will lead the SCO on a new path – from Tianjin to a brighter future.

After the banquet, Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan watched an art performance with the guests.

The above events were also attended by senior Chinese officials, including Cai Qi, Wang Yi, Chen Min'er and Wang Xiaohong. –0–

TIANJIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on Sunday and agreed that China and India are partners, not rivals.

The meeting between the leaders of the world's two most populous countries came ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which is being held in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin from Sunday to Monday.

Xi Jinping told N. Modi that China and India represent opportunities for development for each other, not a threat.

As long as the two countries adhere to this general direction, China-India relations will develop in a sustainable and long-term manner, Xi said.

He said that China and India are important members of the Global South and bear important responsibilities in improving the well-being of the peoples of the two countries, strengthening solidarity and revitalization of developing countries, and advancing the progress of human society.

They must become good neighbors, benevolent friends and partners who contribute to each other's success. "A joint pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant" must be the right choice for the two countries, he continued.

Noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of China-India diplomatic ties, Xi said both countries need to view and manage bilateral relations from a strategic height and a long-term perspective.

The successful meeting between Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi in Kazan last year helped reset China-India relations and give them a new start. The Chinese leader said both sides should strive to further improve relations, starting with the meeting in Tianjin.

He called on the two countries to strengthen strategic communication to deepen mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation to realize mutual benefits and win-win results, take into account each other's concerns and adhere to harmonious coexistence, and strengthen multilateral cooperation to safeguard common interests.

The two Asian neighbors should work together to ensure peace and tranquility in their border regions and prevent the border issue from determining the overall nature of China-India relations, Xi said.

Xi called on the two countries to work together to build a multipolar world and democratize international relations, making due contributions to peace and prosperity in Asia and the world.

N. Modi, in turn, noted that after his meeting with Xi Jinping in Kazan last year, bilateral relations returned to a positive track, peace and stability in the border regions were maintained, and direct air traffic would soon resume.

Noting that India and China are partners, not rivals, and the consensus between the two countries far outweighs their differences, Modi said India is ready to view and develop bilateral ties in the long term.

In the face of great uncertainty in the global economy, it is imperative for India and China, both important economies in the world, to strengthen cooperation, he continued.

India is ready to work with China to find fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable options for resolving the border issue, N. Modi said.

Both countries adhere to strategic autonomy and independent foreign policies and their bilateral relations are not subject to the influence of any third party, the Indian prime minister said, adding that India-China cooperation will make the 21st century a truly "Asian century".

BISHKEK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Kyrgyzstan celebrates Independence Day on August 31.

This year, the main ceremonial event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the country's independence, with the participation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, took place the day before in the city of Jalal-Abad in the south of the country. The celebration began with the presentation of a documentary film reflecting the path of the formation of Kyrgyz statehood. Then a theatrical performance "Kelechektegi Kyrgyzstan" /"Kyrgyzstan of the Future"/ was shown with the participation of about 600 artists.

After this, the head of Kyrgyzstan delivered a congratulatory message on the eve of Independence Day.

In his speech, as reported by the presidential press service, S. Japarov noted that the Independence Day has been celebrated in different regions every year – previously it was held in the fertile Chui Valley, then in the ancient city of Osh, and now in the flourishing city of Jalal-Abad. According to him, the decision to celebrate the holiday in each region is a sign of equal attention to the seven regions of the country, confirmation that Kyrgyzstan is "a single independent state, without division into the center and regions."

The evening ended with performances by Kyrgyz and foreign pop singers.

As previously reported by local media, on the evening of August 31, in honor of the celebration of Independence Day in Bishkek, a festive concert for residents and guests of the city will be held on the main Ala-Too Square. –0–
