BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — A think tank report released Friday confirmed that the Chinese theater was the main battlefield in the East during the World Anti-Fascist War 80 years ago.

The report, titled “Historical Retrospect, Upholding Justice – The Great Contribution of the Main Theater of War in the East to the World Anti-Fascist War,” was published in Chinese and English by the Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with the news agency of the same name.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

In the expansionist plans of Japanese fascism, China was the main target for conquest. For this reason, China was the first to be attacked by Japan and suffered more than other countries. The Chinese people were also the first and most resolute to resist, thus initiating the World Anti-Fascist War and opening the first large-scale theater of war for the anti-fascist struggle in the world, the report says.

According to the report, the Chinese theater of military operations had for a long time contained and resisted the main forces of Japanese militarism, delaying and preventing not only its “northward advance” toward the Soviet Union, but also its “southward advance” toward the Pacific Ocean. This strategic containment limited and thwarted the plans for coordination between the Japanese and German fascists, playing a decisive role in the final defeat of the Japanese invaders.

From the Lugou Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937, until Japan's surrender in 1945, Chinese forces killed more than 1.5 million Japanese troops, accounting for more than 70 percent of Japan's total military losses in World War II.

After wars broke out in Europe and the Pacific, more than 20 countries and regions across Europe, Asia and Africa were subjected to fascist invasion.

China not only resisted Japan's attempts to destroy China, but also provided strategic assistance to the Allied war effort and coordinated strategic operations in both the European and Pacific theaters, the report said.

At the same time, China, as an important rear base for the allies in the Asia-Pacific region for conducting military operations against Japan, provided the allied countries with a huge amount of strategic materials and intelligence data, thereby directly supporting their operations and providing them with critical time, the report says.

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — A report released Friday by the Xinhua Institute, a think tank under the Xinhua News Agency, proposed four major directions to help the world stay on the path of peaceful development and common prosperity by learning from history.

The report, titled “Historical Retrospect, Upholding Justice – The Great Contribution of the Main Theater of War in the East to the World Anti-Fascist War,” was published in Chinese and English by the aforementioned think tank.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The report proposed four key directions: maintaining and developing a correct historical view of World War II, preserving the post-war international order, defending international impartiality and justice, and promoting the creation of a community of shared destiny for mankind.

In particular, the report called for efforts to counter attempts to gloss over aggression and distort history, to present a full picture of the World Anti-Fascist War, and to understand the historical contributions of the Chinese people and peoples around the world so as to uphold and promote a correct historical view of World War II.

“For decades, the Eastern theatre has been marginalized in Western academic narratives of World War II,” the report says. “China served as a pillar of resistance to Japanese militarism, and the significant contributions, pivotal role, and enormous sacrifices of the Chinese people cannot be denied, ignored, or distorted,” the report says.

According to the report, to preserve the post-war international order, countries are called upon to defend the UN-centric international system, promote an equitable and orderly multipolar world, and advance accessible and inclusive economic globalization.

The report emphasizes the importance of promoting the building of a community of shared destiny for humanity. This requires strategic leadership from the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.

“Reflecting on history since the World Anti-Fascist War, we have come to a profound understanding: humanity must unite for a common goal and move towards collective action to implement these global initiatives,” the report says.

URUMQI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — The incoming and outgoing passenger flow at Hongshanzui Port in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region increased 65 percent year-on-year to more than 1,100 times from the beginning of this year to Sept. 3. The passenger and cargo flow through the port has reached a record high in its history.

Hongshanzui, located in Altay County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is a seasonal checkpoint between China and Mongolia. It is located at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level and is a first-class national land checkpoint. Hongshanzui is considered a convenient international trade channel from Xinjiang to Mongolia and Russia.

In view of the growing passenger flow, the Hongshanzui Border Guard Service, together with customs and other inspection departments, have established a joint support and cooperation mechanism, promptly adjusting the deployment of police forces and reserving sufficient police personnel, said Li Ming, an official at the service.

The border service has also strengthened emergency response training for police officers to provide quality advice and assistance to passengers, which has reduced the time it takes for passengers to fill out cards, wait for inspection and clear customs at the border crossing point, he said. -0-

URUMQI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — Walnut harvesting season has begun in Xinhe County, Aksu Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Workers clean, sort and pack freshly picked walnuts every day. The walnuts will be exported from Xinhe to more than 10 countries in Central and Southeast Asia.

Xinhe County's walnut production is expected to reach 12,000 tons this year, with about 80 percent of that going for export.

Li Den'an, a buyer from Jiangsu Province, said the company he works for has been purchasing walnuts from Aksu County, including Xinhe County, for five years in a row, with an annual purchase volume of more than 500 tons.

“Walnuts produced in Aksu County are of good quality and have favorable prices,” he noted.

In recent years, Xinhe County authorities have stepped up efforts to improve the quality and yield of walnuts through measures such as introducing elite varieties, improving planting technology and establishing standardized planting bases, which has helped Xinhe-brand walnuts enter the international market. -0-

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Friday to rename the Defense Department the "Department of War," local media reported.

The decree will allow this title to be used as an additional one in official correspondence, with titles such as “Minister of War.”

A full legal change would still require congressional approval.

Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have argued that the revival represents a stronger “warrior spirit.” Critics have warned that it could come at a high cost and detract from security priorities.

“Defense is too defensive,” Trump said last month. “We want to defend, but we also want to attack if we have to. So I think that sounds better.”

The Department of War, created in 1789, directed the U.S. Army and oversaw the U.S. armed forces during both world wars before being transformed into the Department of Defense in 1949. –0–
