CHANGCHUN, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) — Learning Chinese, exploring local attractions, and taking dumpling-making master classes were just some of the activities on the agenda for 72 students and faculty members of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) during their visit to Changchun, the capital of Northeast China's Jilin Province. The three-week educational camp, carefully planned by Jilin University of Foreign Studies, gave the Russian students a chance not only to learn about Chinese culture in class, but also to see and experience China in their daily lives.
One evening, the campers visited the Siji Nanhe Riverside Park, located on the bank of the Yitong River in Changchun, to enjoy a light and sound fountain show, have coffee and snacks at a bustling market, and take memorable photos on a beach with unusual pink sand.
The Russian guests were pleasantly surprised that this modern recreation area was created with care for the environment. They highly appreciated China's approach to "green" development and innovation in the field of cultural tourism. "This pink beach is simply magnificent! It is something unique, I definitely want to come here with my family," shared her impressions student Irina, who speaks fluent Chinese.
“We have been organizing this camp for the second year in a row. China and Russia are friendly neighbors, and the northeastern region of China borders Russia. The interest and enthusiasm of students to participate in these trips is very high, and the number of those wishing to participate is growing,” said Song Dandan, Director of the Institute of International Exchanges and Head of the Department of International Exchange and Cooperation at Jilin Foreign Studies University. She also noted that “the format of study tours is very effective, and students are no longer limited to lectures in classrooms, but visit various Chinese cities and villages to see the country with their own eyes, participate in its life and communicate with locals. This allows them not only to truly experience the charm of Chinese culture, but also to make new friends.”
The city of Hunchun, located in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of Jilin Province /Northeast China/, where the borders of China, Russia and the DPRK converge, has seen a surge in the popularity of educational tours for Russian schoolchildren. In anticipation of the new school year, Hunchun Secondary Schools No. 3 and No. 4 are actively preparing to host students from Russian schools for educational and familiarization trips and excursions.
According to Yu Mei, deputy director of the Hunchun City Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, study tours are in great demand among Russians because they offer a rich program and the results obtained after their stay are simply excellent. “Learning calligraphy, studying kung fu, practicing Chinese… The richness and depth of Chinese culture attracts more and more Russian teenagers,” she noted.
In March of this year, a group of more than 40 teenagers from the Russian city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur visited Hunchun on an educational tour dedicated to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
At the Hunchun TCM Hospital, Russian schoolchildren visited the TCM pharmacy, learned about acupuncture, moxibustion and other specific treatment methods, tried herbal teas and studied traditional Chinese health fitness exercises “Ba Duan Jin” /”Eight Pieces of Brocade”/ in practice. During the visit, the children showed genuine interest in medical culture and a desire for knowledge.
“Acupuncture is pure magic! I had a stuffy nose and the doctor put two needles in my nose. After a while, my nose actually cleared up! It’s incredible,” said Russian teenager Sergey. Holding his own moxa sticks, he added that the trip to China gave him a lot of new knowledge and helped him better understand China and its medical culture.
According to Han Shimin, the curator of this study tour and the person in charge of Han Yi Jiu Moxibustion Clinic, such international educational tours allow Russian friends to get to know Chinese medical culture and Chinese youth closely. They provide an opportunity to exchange knowledge and interact, which in turn significantly expands the popularity and influence of Chinese medical traditions and iconic intangible cultural heritage.
In addition to Jilin Province, 18 border cities in Heilongjiang Province (Northeast China), including Heihe, Mohe, Fuyuan, Dongning, Mishan and Hulin, have actively taken advantage of the border rivers and lakes and ports bordering Russia.
