SAO PAULO, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's defense team said Thursday they will appeal a court ruling that sentenced the former leader to 27 years and three months in prison.

Earlier, four out of five judges of the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil voted to find J. Bolsonaro guilty of attempting a coup d'état.

The former president's lawyers, Celso Vilardi and Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno, said they would file "all possible appeals, including at the international level."

The defence argued that the case should have been heard by a lower court or the Federal Supreme Court en banc, rather than its first panel. They also criticised the limited time given to consider evidence. –0–

XI'AN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) — The high-speed railway linking Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, with Yan'an in the same province has entered the joint debugging and testing phase, marking a major step toward full-scale operation.

China Railway Xi'an Group Co., Ltd. said a test train completed a full run on the new railway on Thursday, marking the beginning of the joint testing phase of the project. During this phase, engineers will simulate real operating conditions to thoroughly examine and optimize all systems, including the track, power supply and signaling.

According to Zhou Weimin, project director of the Xi'an-Yan'an railway, the line's length reached 299.8 km, with bridges and tunnels accounting for 91 percent of its length, including 47 tunnels and 67 large and medium-sized bridges.

Liu Wentao, chief designer of the Xi'an-Yan'an line from China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group Co., Ltd., said the design team took into account the location of stations, terrain, geological features and environmental protection issues to ensure both technical safety and harmony with the environment.

The railway, designed to run at 350 km/h, will cut travel time between Xi'an and Yan'an from 2.5 hours to about 1 hour when it goes into operation later this year. Yan'an has great historical significance as a revolutionary base of the CPC from 1937 to 1947.

As the first high-speed railway in the old revolutionary base area in northern Shaanxi Province, the line will play an important role in optimizing the national high-speed railway network, promoting rural revitalization and supporting the development of western regions. -0-
