BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — The electric hum of a virtual race track filled the air as crowds gathered around simulators at the recently concluded 2025 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) in Beijing. Among them was Xue Mei, who had just stepped out of the racing simulator, her hands still feeling a slight tingle from controlling the virtual steering wheel.

"It's not like a video game, it's almost like real car driving. It's like real Formula One racing," she said.

The glowing response highlights the huge commercial potential of China’s sports industry. Ricky Kuo, CEO of a Malaysian-Chinese joint venture that runs sim racing events, cited eSports racing as a particularly promising opportunity in the country.

“China’s massive combined market of 1.4 billion people has unprecedented economies of scale,” he said, adding that the company is partnering with a Chinese state-owned enterprise to launch national racing competitions in 20 cities next year. In addition to the competitions, the company plans to open e-sports racing-themed stores in shopping malls in major Chinese cities.

As Chinese consumers become more affluent and health-conscious, demand for sports experiences is growing rapidly – not just for fitness and events, but also for high-end offerings such as sports tourism and tech-enabled training. As was evident at CIFTIS 2025, this demand is fueling a boom in tech innovation and attracting the interest of both domestic and international companies.

In the open demo area, two boxing robots in red and green helmets threw punches – dodging, blocking and swinging, drawing gasps and applause from the crowd.

Nearby, tennis fans took their shots under the gaze of an AI coach: high-definition cameras tracked every move, analyzing the speed and trajectory of the ball to provide professional feedback that was accessible to everyone.

The just-concluded 12th edition of CIFTIS showcases China's service sector development and market potential. While topics such as tourism and finance are familiar to visitors, sports as a service remains a relatively new concept.

Many exhibitors, such as billiards manufacturer Duya, were attending the fair for the first time this year, a sign of the growing vitality of the industry. Well-known among young billiards enthusiasts in China, the company shared plans to expand the already popular “Duya Legends Golden Nine International Tour,” which has attracted participants from more than 60 countries and regions to play Chinese billiards.

“We are trying to create an image of Chinese billiards as a healthy and fashionable sports lifestyle. In this way, we will attract more young people in China and around the world to play the game,” said Yan Yuqing of Duya, adding that CIFTIS offers the company a platform to seek broader cross-industry cooperation with sectors such as the automotive industry, sports drinks and finance.

Overseas companies are also keen to take advantage of this growing market. At the Beijing fair, French extreme sports organiser Hurricane Group unveiled an ambitious plan for China – to develop around 100 urban sports venues, launch an International Extreme Sports Competition and create a new event in Beijing. It also envisages a giant 100-hectare integrated resort area dedicated entirely to extreme sports – the largest of its kind in the world.

“The Chinese market has clearly become our number one market worldwide due to its size and the growing appetite for urban sports,” said Hurricane Group CEO Hervé André-Benoît.

A report released by the General Administration of Sport of China at CIFTIS 2025 highlighted sports as a key area for trade growth. China's sports services trade has seen steady growth in recent years, with imports up 30.8 percent and exports up 43.5 percent year-on-year in 2024.

Policy incentives are expected to accelerate the trend. Earlier this month, China’s State Council issued guidelines aimed at further stimulating sports consumption and spurring high-quality development of the industry. Under the guidelines, the country aims to increase the total value of its sports industry to more than 7 trillion yuan (about $986 billion) by 2030.

Notably, the impact extends beyond sports. Last summer, when the Su Super League, an amateur soccer tournament in eastern China's Jiangsu province, took over China, not only did ticket sales rise, but tourism, food and hospitality services in cities in Jiangsu province also saw a significant boost.

Perhaps the venue for CIFTIS 2025 tells its own story. Its permanent venue, Beijing’s Shougang Park, which hosted the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, has been transformed from a former steel mill into a symbol of urban regeneration, with the majestic Big Air Ski Jump now a major attraction for visitors and international event participants alike.

In China's evolving economic strategy, sports are no longer just a game. They have become an engine of growth and a new playground for global connections. -0-

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Chinese researchers have developed a hybrid system to track the sources and changes of carbon dioxide emissions on roads in real time with a resolution of 30 meters, according to a research paper recently published in the journal Sustainable Cities and Society.

The technology has been applied in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, southern China, and is expected to be used in more cities in the future to assess and help reduce carbon emissions on urban roads.

Urban expansion and population mobility have led to ever-increasing carbon dioxide emissions from roads, posing serious challenges in terms of local climate regulation, public health and carbon neutrality.

A key limitation of previous carbon emission inventories is their coarse spatial resolution, said Wang Li, corresponding author of the paper and a research fellow at the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The lack of granularity makes it difficult to account for small-scale changes in emissions across different road sections or over time, making it even more difficult to accurately track the sources of emissions or explain what causes them, Wang Li said.

Developing accurate monitoring methods to conduct multivariate analysis of CO2 levels on roads is essential for their effective reduction.

Wang Li and his team developed their system, which combines Panoptic-AI and a mobile surveillance system, to predict hourly CO2 concentration on roads with a resolution of 30 meters and provide dynamic prediction of the increase in CO2 concentration in urban transport networks during the daytime.

The development combines artificial intelligence with panoramic cameras, high-precision greenhouse gas analyzers and weather sensors to simultaneously obtain data from multiple sources on road carbon dioxide concentrations, traffic volumes, building layouts, land cover and weather conditions during mobile surveys.

The research team achieved an average accuracy of over 93 percent in identifying emission sources. At the same time, the system allows for the quantitative assessment of the influence of individual factors such as traffic conditions, surrounding land cover and meteorological variables, thereby clearly revealing the spatio-temporal dynamics and mechanisms that determine carbon emissions.

“This method is an innovative application of artificial intelligence in environmental monitoring, and can build a multi-dimensional carbon monitoring system with a full range of applications when combined with traditional emissions inventories and satellite greenhouse gas monitoring technologies,” said Wang Li. -0-

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) — Experts have presented innovative strategies to promote traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services in the international market, with a focus on Central Asian countries and Russia, at the ongoing China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS-2025) in Beijing.

At the TCM International Cooperation Forum on Trade in Services, Li Jun, director of the Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, noted that the growth of China's services exports has already outpaced the growth of goods exports.

He stressed the need to exploit the global opportunities created by the growth of medical tourism by integrating the unique benefits of TCM with cross-border medical services.

According to forum participants, TCM is becoming a new growth point for Chinese services exports within the framework of the Belt and Road initiative.

Chen Yuzhuo, Chairman of the Committee on Integration of Medicine and Health of the World Federation of TCM Societies, emphasized the prospects of the “TCM Silver Economy” model to address the problems of global population aging.

“The unique advantages of TCM in disease prevention, treatment of chronic diseases and rehabilitation should be fully utilized,” he said.

A striking example of TCM's successful entry into the international arena was shared by Huang Bingzhu, director of the Xixuntan Chinese Medicine Exhibition Hall at the Sanya Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The institution is active both in the domestic market and abroad, offering rehabilitation services to foreign guests.

To overcome cultural and language barriers, Sanya Hospital has developed a hands-on approach to training, focusing on mastering specific skills. “The training focuses on practical skills rather than complex theory. Students learn 1-2 specific techniques that they can immediately apply in practice,” Huang Bingzhu explained.

"In Central Asian countries and Russia, large-scale TCM projects such as thick-needle acupuncture and massage are gaining popularity. Russian tourists in Sanya often look for such services, along with beach holidays and dentistry," Huang Bingzhu added.

“15 years ago, I tried traditional Chinese medicine for the first time, and the result was excellent,” shared a Russian tourist named Alexandra. “Every year, I take my whole family from my hometown to Moscow, then fly to Beijing, and from Beijing to Sanya. Although the journey is not short, the effect of treatment using traditional Chinese medicine is really good, and this health trip is worth it,” she added.

According to the report, over more than 20 years, Sanya Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has received over 100,000 patients from more than 30 countries and regions participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, including Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, and Turkey. In addition, the hospital has signed contracts to provide TCM health and training services with countries such as Sweden and Malaysia. -0-

China Promotes Services Trade, Opens Opportunities for Global Cooperation

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) — Amid global trade challenges, China has sent new signals to further promote trade in services, giving a strong impetus to its own development and creating more space for global economic growth.

The signal has resonated strongly at the ongoing China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) 2025 in Beijing, which has brought together exhibitors from more than 80 countries, regions and international organizations.

As China steadily opens up its services sector and consumption shifts towards this area, the fair provides an important meeting point for global companies to access new opportunities, find solutions and share the benefits of China's high-quality development.

GROWING DEMAND

The fair, now in its 12th year, serves as a platform for China to showcase the development of its service industry and its market potential. The central exhibition area alone covers an area of over 100,000 square meters, equivalent to about 14 standard football pitches, covering a wide range of service sectors such as culture and tourism, education, transportation, health care, finance, environment, sports and information technology.

This year, CIFTIS offers visitors a unique opportunity to tour Beijing's most iconic cultural sites without leaving the walls of the cultural and tourism services hall.

Among the many exhibitors, the joint stand of the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and some other famous landmarks of Beijing, which brought their popular cultural and creative products to the event, stands out. This allowed overseas visitors to effectively get acquainted with the most striking manifestations of cultural creativity of the Chinese capital without having to travel all over the city.

“The fair offers a key platform for communication and cooperation with potential partners across various industries,” said Wang Fang at the Beijing Zoo booth, having just discussed potential cooperation in the production of eco-friendly souvenirs with a representative of one of the invited companies.

“Our goal is to provide both domestic and foreign tourists with better services and added value,” she added.

Instead of searching for traditional goods, CIFTIS visitors exchange impressions. As China enters a stage where the service sector accounts for more than half of the economy, demand for quality services is growing, creating space for the domestic industry to raise its standards and for international companies to seize opportunities.

China's consumption structure has reached a stage where consumption of goods and consumption of services are equally important, said Vice Minister of Commerce Sheng Qiuping, noting that from January to July this year, retail sales of services grew 5.2 percent year on year, and the share of services in total consumption increased.

Sheng Qiuping pointed out that the problem is that there is insufficient supply of quality services to meet the growing demand. And in this context, CIFTIS plays an important role.

With nearly 2,000 exhibitors, including nearly 500 Fortune Global 500 companies and industry leaders such as Walmart, AstraZeneca and KPMG, the fair provides a glimpse into some of the most innovative offerings in the global services industry.

Chinese humanoid robots have attracted considerable attention by demonstrating capabilities such as delivering food, making coffee, playing football and even taking part in boxing matches.

Hongson To, chairman of KPMG China and Asia Pacific, said China's development of new productive forces, including cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence, will drive progress in knowledge-intensive services trade.

"As an example of China's high-level opening-up, CIFTIS will continue to optimize the structure of trade in services and bring high resilience and vitality to the Chinese economy," he added.

DEEPENING OPENNESS

Paul Bateman, chairman of JP Morgan Asset Management, has visited China more than 150 times over the past 30 years. “With each visit I am more impressed by the vitality and growth of the Chinese market,” he said at the CIFTIS Global Services Trade Summit.

Noting that his company's presence in China has expanded in recent years, he stressed that thanks to China's decision to open up its services sector, especially to lift limits on foreign ownership in certain financial services, the growth of trade in services creates significant opportunities for the industry.

China continues to push for the opening up of its services sector. Last year, the country established a nationwide negative list management system for cross-border trade in services. In designated pilot free trade zones, foreign residents can now open an account to deposit and record securities or futures, and conduct business such as providing securities investment advice or futures trading support services.

These measures have contributed to a significant increase in trade in services. In the first half of this year, China's total services trade reached a record 3.9 trillion yuan (about $549 billion), up 8 percent year on year.

During the fair, officials pledged to make efforts to further open up the sector. “China will push forward pilot programs for opening up in the telecommunications and medical sectors, while steadily advancing opening up in the education and cultural sectors,” Sheng Qiuping said.

The country's authorities will also deepen alignment with high-standard international economic and trade rules and promote the formation of a transparent, stable and predictable institutional environment, he added.

"China is willing to work with all countries and parties to strengthen openness and cooperation in trade in services and promote global trade and economic growth," Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang said at the fair.

SHARED CAPABILITIES

For international CIFTIS members such as Australian vocational education and training provider Chisholm Institute of TAFE, China's growing demand for quality services presents significant opportunities.

“We are looking to find partners that will enable us to deliver Australian skills services to the Chinese market,” said Christopher Hogg, global business development manager, highlighting education as a key area of cooperation in services trade between the two countries.

Over the years, CIFTIS has become a key platform that facilitates global cooperation, encourages exchanges of advanced services and creates shared opportunities for global business.

The Norwegian national pavilion, featuring nine companies from sectors such as healthcare, food and aquaculture, is a clear demonstration of how changing consumption patterns in China are creating opportunities for foreign businesses.

Henning Christoffersen, Trade Counsellor at the Norwegian Embassy in China, noted the alignment between Norway’s offer and the growing health consciousness of the Chinese. “Chinese consumers are very health conscious. And for the products that Norway creates, that’s great,” he said, seeing “great opportunities” for Norwegian businesses to find partners and supply goods to Chinese consumers.

As Sheng Qiuping noted, by deepening integration with global markets, strengthening industrial cooperation and expanding open cooperation in trade in services, China will inject greater impetus into global economic prosperity. -0-
