Beijing, March 19 (Xinhua) — There are no winners in protracted wars, and a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities are the aspirations of the people, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the announcement during a telephone conversation with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. The conversation was initiated by the British side.

The heads of the foreign ministries of the two countries exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East.

I. Cooper explained the UK's position on the current situation in the Middle East, noting that in the increasingly unstable global environment, the British side hopes to maintain close communication with China, facilitate a rapid cessation of hostilities, the resumption of diplomatic negotiations, and the search for long-term solutions.

Wang Yi, in turn, outlined China's position, pointing out that the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, and the scale of hostilities is expanding, which not only undermines peace and stability in the region, but also has an increasingly direct impact on the international energy market, finance, trade and shipping, harming the common interests of all countries.

Wang Yi said China calls on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, resolve differences through equal dialogue, and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the region.

The Chinese diplomat noted that China and the United Kingdom, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, bear responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, both sides should intensify communication, remain committed to measures that promote peace, and jointly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations in order to prevent further undermining of the international order and erosion of the foundations of world peace.

The two sides also exchanged views on China-UK relations and shared the view that it is necessary to actively implement the agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries, expand cooperation, and steadily develop a long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the UK, thereby ensuring stability and predictability in a world full of change and upheaval.

Beijing, March 19 (Xinhua) — China calls on Japan to reconsider its position, correct its mistakes, and change course, avoiding further down the wrong path, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Thursday.

Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular press briefing, commenting on a report published by the US intelligence community. The document documents a "significant shift" in Japan's position on Taiwan, while Japanese authorities themselves state that Japan's definition of an "existential threat" remains unchanged.

Lin Jian stated that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous statements on the Taiwan issue constitute flagrant interference in China's internal affairs, demonstrate a malicious intent to intervene militarily on the Taiwan issue, and constitute a threat to use force against China. China has repeatedly clarified its strict position on this matter, the Chinese diplomat added.

According to Lin Jian, the report shows that the international community is increasingly aware of the harmful nature and destructive impact of Sanae Takaichi's remarks and is vigilant against Japan's dangerous trend of provocative and destabilizing actions.

He pointed out that simply by declaring that “the position has not changed,” Japan finds it difficult to explain its actions and is unable to win the trust of neighboring Asian countries and the international community.

“We call on the Japanese side to reconsider its position and correct its mistakes, change course, practically implement the four Sino-Japanese political documents and its own commitments, strictly abide by the pacifist provisions of the Japanese Constitution, and avoid further following the wrong path,” Lin Jian concluded. –0–

GENEVA, March 19 (Xinhua) — The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Thursday said world trade growth will slow in 2026 after a stronger-than-expected performance in 2025, warning that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could put further pressure on global trade.

In its latest World Trade Prospects and Statistics report, the WTO forecasts that under a baseline growth scenario, which excludes sharp hikes in energy prices, world merchandise trade growth will slow to 1.9 percent in 2026 from 4.6 percent in 2025, but recover to 2.6 percent in 2027.

The report estimates that growth in commercial services trade will slow to 4.8 percent in 2026 before accelerating again to 5.1 percent in 2027. Combined growth in trade in goods and services will be 2.7 percent in 2026, down from 4.7 percent in 2025.

The report forecasts that global GDP growth will slow slightly from 2.9 percent in 2025 to 2.8 percent in both 2026 and 2027. –0–

Minsk, March 19 (Xinhua) — Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko held talks on Thursday with a U.S. delegation led by U.S. Special Envoy John Cole. The Belarusian leader's press service released the information.

A. Lukashenko noted that the agenda for the talks had been predetermined. "But I would urge you to discuss regional issues. And not just Ukraine's problems, but global ones as well. And not just the war in the Middle East. I think my perspective on global issues, especially the situation in the Middle East, will be important to you, since you are fighting against our friends. And I am ready to discuss this matter frankly," the Belarusian leader said.

Following the talks, J. Cole noted that the parties discussed issues related to relations between Belarus and the United States. "We also discussed what Belarus thinks about the war in Iran, what the United States thinks about the war in Iran, and how this situation is developing," Belta news agency quoted the US special envoy as saying.

According to him, the meeting participants also discussed developments in Venezuela and other regions of the world, as well as the Belarusian president's possible trip to the United States. One of the topics touched on the conflict in Ukraine.

The parties also discussed the reopening of the US Embassy in Belarus. "Before our trip here, we held extensive consultations with the US State Department and other relevant agencies. Work is underway in that direction. I can't give any specific dates. But the work is ongoing, and both sides agreed that this is very important," noted J. Cole.

Furthermore, the US special envoy announced the possibility of an immediate personal meeting between the presidents of Belarus and the US. According to him, the situation in relations between the two countries has improved significantly. "We've come a long way since we first came here to meet with the President of Belarus. The situation has improved greatly," J. Cole concluded.
