Beijing, September 22 (Xinhua) — China is preparing for Typhoon Ragasa, the 18th typhoon of the year. Heavy rainfall is expected to hit the southern and eastern parts of the country.

According to the National Meteorological Center (NMC), Ragasa strengthened into a super typhoon on Sunday morning. It is expected to make landfall between Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, and Wenchang City, Hainan Province, between Wednesday morning and midday.

Meteorologists have warned that Ragasa, moving fast and maintaining strength, will become the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year.

As the typhoon approaches, heavy rainfall is expected from Tuesday through Thursday in eastern Taiwan and parts of Guangdong, Fujian, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Rainfall amounts will reach 280 mm in some areas. Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, the National Meteorological Center predicted.

The NMC recommended that local authorities take precautionary measures, promptly evacuate local residents to safe areas, and strengthen security management in the transport and marine tourism sectors. -0-

CAIRO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abu al-Gheit on Sunday welcomed the recognition of the independent State of Palestine by Britain, Canada and Australia.

The recognition “corrects a historical mistake that has persisted for many years,” he wrote on the social network X, adding that this step also meets the demands of the people of these countries to support the Palestinians’ right to independence and a dignified life.

“We expect to receive more significant international recognition in the near future,” said A.A. al-Gheit.

Earlier on Sunday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a video message that the UK "formally recognises the State of Palestine" and called for a return to the principle of "two states for two peoples."

Australia recognises the legitimate and long-standing aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish their own state, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a joint statement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced recognition of the State of Palestine. –0–

FUZHOU, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — East China's Fujian Province on Sunday opened its first Arctic sea route to Europe as part of the development of the "Ice Silk Road."

The container ship Istanbul Bridge left the Jiangyin port area in Fuzhou Port on Sunday morning and is expected to reach Europe via the Arctic route in just 19 days.

According to Fuzhou Customs, the new route will connect major Chinese ports including Qingdao, Dalian, Shanghai and Ningbo, as well as key European ports such as Felixstowe (UK), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Hamburg (Germany) and Gdansk (Poland).

This route provides exporters from Fujian Province and its neighboring provinces with a more convenient and efficient channel for delivering building materials, textiles, electromechanical products and other products to European markets.

The new route will cut shipping time by about a week compared to the China-Europe rail service, and by more than 20 days compared to sea shipping through the Suez Canal or the Cape of Good Hope route, said Xiao Bin, business manager of China Ocean Shipping Agency Fuzhou Co., Ltd.

According to Xiao Bin, the launch of the new route increases the number of departures and provides companies with more opportunities to transport cargo to Europe. The first route coincides with the peak pre-Christmas shopping season in Europe, allowing exporters to enter the market earlier while avoiding congestion during the peak shipping season, he added. -0-

Beirut, September 22 (Xinhua) — An Israeli drone struck a motorcycle and a passing car in the southern Lebanese city of Bint Jbeil on Sunday, killing five people, including three children, and wounding two, health and security sources said.

The Ministry of Health's Emergency Operations Center confirmed the casualties. According to Lebanese Army intelligence, the drone fired two guided missiles, killing Hezbollah member Mohammad Mroua on a motorcycle and four civilians in a nearby car.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, currently in New York for a UN meeting, condemned what he called a "massacre," accusing Israel of violating the November 2024 ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel. He called on the international community to pressure Israel to withdraw its troops from Lebanese territory and comply with the agreement.

While the ceasefire ended months of cross-border clashes related to the Gaza war, Israel continues to launch sporadic strikes into southern Lebanon, citing threats from Hezbollah, and maintains five military positions along the border with Lebanon.

LANZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — More than 1,200 representatives from 97 countries and eight international organizations gathered for the 8th Dunhuang International Silk Road Cultural Expo, which opened Sunday in Dunhuang, northwest China's Gansu Province, a key hub along the ancient Silk Road.

The EXPO runs until Monday and includes events such as cultural dialogues and exhibitions, as well as artistic performances, aimed at promoting global cultural cooperation.

The Mogao Grottoes, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, represent an extraordinary cultural heritage. Its frescoes bear witness to the profound dialogue in religion, art, and ideology along the Silk Road, which left a profound mark on this ancient trade route, noted UNESCO Assistant Director-General Qu Xing, speaking at the EXPO.

Dunhuang, which witnessed the transport of Chinese silk and tea to the west and the introduction of once-foreign products such as grapes, carrots and pomegranates to China more than 2,000 years ago, remains a gateway to the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Dunhuang International Silk Road Cultural Expo was first held in 2016. The 8th edition, scheduled for 2025, will feature an exhibition space of approximately 24,000 square meters, showcasing the latest research achievements in Dunhuang studies, as well as the culture, art, intangible cultural heritage, and cultural and creative products of countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Nanning, September 22 (Xinhua) — The 22nd China-ASEAN Expo and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit concluded on Sunday in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, south China. Agreements on more than 500 trade and economic projects were signed during the events.

Wei Zhaohui, Secretary-General of the China-ASEAN Expo Secretariat, said at a press conference on Sunday that agreements on 155 investment projects were signed during this year's event, including 74 projects in the manufacturing industry, accounting for 88 percent of the total investment.

According to Wei Zhaohui, the specified projects in the manufacturing industry cover such sectors as mechanical engineering and equipment, petrochemical and chemical industries, non-ferrous metals, new materials, light industry and textiles, as well as information technology.

The five-day EXPO covered 160,000 square meters of exhibition space and attracted 3,260 enterprises from 60 countries. Of these, 627 were from ASEAN countries.

For the first time at EXPO, a pavilion dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) was created, which presented approximately 1,200 exhibits, including approximately 20 large language models and 60 intelligent robots.

According to the preliminary plan, the 23rd Expo will be held from September 17 to 21, 2026, with the Philippines as the theme country. -0-

Damascus, September 22 (Xinhua) — Syria's People's Assembly (parliament) elections have been set for October 5, the country's Supreme Committee for Parliamentary Elections announced on Sunday. These will be the first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government last year.

It is noted that the decision was made in accordance with the constitutional declaration and decrees issued earlier this year by interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, who created the Supreme Electoral Committee in June. Elections will be held under a temporary indirect electoral system designed to form a new legislative body within 60-90 days.

In August, elections in As-Suwayda, Hasakeh and Raqqa were postponed due to security concerns.

The seats allocated to these provinces will remain vacant until “suitable conditions and a safe environment are created,” the committee said.

Sweida is experiencing sectarian clashes, while Hasakah and Raqqa continue to face instability as a result of tensions between the interim authorities and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. –0–
